We recently rented 3 rooms for several nights during our pre-cruise stay in Rome. The location is absolutely perfect, a block from the Pantheon, and within walking distance of everything in the ancient section. If you only have a few days for Rome, why waste all your time taking taxis and buses? We had two rooms overlooking the piazza (which were actually pretty quiet despite this) and a large suite in the back.

The rooms were spacious by Roman standards and clean, the breakfasts more than adequate, with cereals, meats, cheeses, fresh fruit and juices, and custom made espresso or cappucino. They even offered us breakfast upon our arrival pretty early in the morning, even though the rooms were not yet available.

A ton of restaurants nearby, including a few we had great meals at reasonable prices, such as Casa Coppelle and La Tavernetta 48.

Be aware that there is no elevator, but it is only one flight up, so not too bad. Also, note that this is not a full-fledged hotel, so there are times when there may not be somebody in the office. But those are minor inconveniences compared to the overall quality and location of this lodging.

Unfortunately, I did not personally meet Francesco, as he was busy working on additional units to rent out, which is welcome news for those needed rooms in the future.

In short, highly recommend the Relais Maddalena in Rome.

We had a great stay at the Relais Madalena. When we checked in to the hotel, Francesco sat with us for a good half hour and gave us a lot of information about surrounding restaurants and tips about the sites around Rome.

This hotel is centrally located and is within walking distance to the Pantheon, Vatican, Trevi Fountain Piazza Novana, Spanish steps and the Colosseum.

When you arrive at the hotel, you must go to the large green door and push the buzzer for the hotel. You will be "buzzed" in and then you go to the set of stairs to your right, and at the top are two doors, one on each side of the landing. The lobby door is on your left and you probably will be greeted by Francesco.

The hotel room was very comfortable and we didn't have any problems. The only comment I would make about the bathroom is the style of blow dryer was the kind which is a unit attached to the wall with an "accordian-like" hose. This type of hair dryer takes a bit of time to dry hair. It wasn't that big of a deal, however, it would have been nice to have a regular blow dryer.

Breakfast was simple but good. The breakfast room is rather small, however, we never had a problem getting a table. The cappuccinos were great!

We checked out of the hotel in the morning and had the hotel hold our luggage as we went and toured around Rome. When we came back around 7:00 p.m. we asked if we could use a restroom. The woman who was there at the time took us into the breakfast room and after we used the restroom, she made us espresso and put out some biscotti. What service, even after we checked out!

We will definitely return to this hotel the next we are in Rome!

Thank you TripAdvisor community! You guys came through big time with this recommendation. Relais Maddalena is perfect hideaway in a quiet piazza (aside from the occasional late night reveler who clearly enjoyed a tad too much wine) and is only steps from the Pantheon. And you’re really only a few minutes or just slightly more to all of the top attractions—you’re really close to the Trevi Fountain and the Spanish Steps, or to Campo De' Fiori and the Piazza Navona (have a glass of prosecco at one of the many eateries that surround the square and watch people--and life--go by). You’re a little farther from the Coliseum and Palantine, maybe a 20-minute walk. Beyond that, even hearty walkers can make it across the Tiber river to the Vatican museums, Sistine Chapel and St. Peter's Basilica—a little longer, but definitely doable. And being in Rome, you're of course surrounded by many fantastic restaurants when you’re staying at the Relais Maddelna. The hotel is actually more like a quaint B&B, with well appointed, clean and up-to-date rooms, in a four hundred year old historic Roman building, with oodles of character. There's an inviting kitchen nook, that just opened on the second floor, where breakfast is served. It's a continental breakfast—breads, fruits, cereals, meats, cheeses, juices, yogurts, etc—hearty enough to get you going in the morning. But the real stars at Relais Maddalena are Francesco, the owner/operator, and his staff. Extremely service oriented, always making sure that you have whatever directions you need or recommendations you need to great restaurants and gelaterias. A car ride in from the airport is also included in the price, which was a nice additional perk. My wife, daughter and I had a wonderful time and can not recommend too highly. We're already planning our next trip.

Enjoy!

Room Tip: Tell Francesco that you'd like a room facing Piazza dell Maddalena.

My wife and I stayed at Relais Maddalena for two nights while on our honeymoon in Italy. This place was absolutely perfect!! The location couldn't be better...only steps from the Pantheon, a 3 or 4 minute walk to the Trevi Fountain and maybe a 20 minute walk to The Coliseum. The staff here is truly what makes this place special. Francesco and Margareta are so incredibly friendly, welcoming and helpful! Honestly, if I traveled to Rome 50 more times, I would never even search for another hotel. You will love it here, believe me!

We spent 2 nights at the Relais Maddalena as a treat after 5 nights on a congress in a large hotel. What a fantastic place! Everything as described on TA by previous reviewers. The lack of lift put aside (cannot be installed in this beautiful old building) we really could not fault this B&B in the very heart of wonderful Rome and can't wait to return!

We stumbled upon this little Gem through AirBnB. What a great find.
One block from the Pantheon, it sits central to all sites.
Francesco and his staff totally hooked us up throughout our stay with a driver to meet us at the airport, great restaurant suggestions, gelato, and a cab to the train station upon departure.
The staff was excellent from the desk, to the server at Breakfast, and including the housekeeper! Breakfast was typical continental with a selection of mouthwatering fresh fruits and really good granola!
The room was immaculate and generously sized for Europe, the bed was comfy and the bathroom was very large and well appointed. Our window overlooked the piazza Maddalena with a view of a stunning church and several good restaurants below. In the afternoons and evenings we could listen to the musicians in the piazza or close our window and shut it all out.
WE will never stay anywhere else.
Thank you Francesco!!

My wife and I just returned from our trip, including a weekend in Rome on our way back home. We stayed at this terrifically located, small hotel last year, and reviewed it then. I would like to now provide the additional information that our experience was every bit as impressive on this trip as well. We stayed in a different double room, again with very nice view of the appealing, active piazza below. The space was nicely decorated, air conditioning was strong, room was very clean and plenty comfortable all around. The gratis mini-bar sodas on arrival were a welcome bonus. Breakfast in the tiny breakfast room was very satisfying. But perhaps best of all, Francesco and his staff have in no way been spoiled by their hard earned success - the seemingly laid back service is personal, unfailingly helpful, and the staff can be relied on without exception to provide effective and cordial assistance.
So this a very centrally located small hotel that consistently provides an opportunity for a sweet and worry free accommodation experience at a decent price. We plan to return again in the fall.

Room Tip: rooms over the attractive, small but active piazza below offer a nice view of church and restaurants...
