This was a 14-hour tour from Rome, starting VERY early in the morning, that was worth
every minute of the time spent. We were picked up at our hotel at 6:40 a.m. and taken to
the bus terminal. With only 12 people on the tour, it did not take long for the group to
assemble. It was a nice group of people and we were on a small bus with a nice driver
and our Rome guide, Lucilla. Upon arrival in Assisi, the local guide - a Spanish woman
named Begonia - took over. She was fantastic, and could speak in 3 languages very
fast but still very clearly. The town of Assisi is beautiful, and we not only walked through
the whole town but also visited the 3 most important churches, in which Begonia explained
all the art and history. We saw the church of St. Clare, where she is buried, the church
where St. Francis died and where he was originally buried, and the magnificent basilica
where he is now buried. In the basilica, we were able to place candles at his grave.
Upon arrival back in Rome - which was later than planned due to heavy traffic - Lucilla put
the 4 people whose hotels were farthest from the bus terminal, into a taxi at the bus
company's expense, so that we could get back to the hotels faster. Lunch was also
included in this tour, at a hotel in Assisi. This is a very worthwhile tour to take and was
one of the best things of our 2-week trip.
