“Wow Hotel But Watch the Prices”
Reviewed 8 July 2014

This hotel lives up to everything that is described. It is totally a unique property to stay at in Rome. The rooms are beautiful and the Emerald Club for Hilton Honors was outstanding. The staff was quite friendly and helpful at all times. Unfortunately, the big downside was the nickel and dime charges that were way too excessive for poolside beverages, phone charges, etc. Of course, you do not go to this property expecting them to only charge $1.00 for a bottle of water and $1.00 for a Diet Coke buy the pool...but $20. That is crazy. Overall, a phenomenal hotel but go with the idea that you are going to pay over and over again for non room charges.

Must be one of the best views from a Hotel in Rome. Perched on one of Rome's fabled hills with an amazing view of the Vatican and the rest of Rome. You do feel like you are outside of the city rather than in it.

Service is impeccable, friendly and of the highest standard. Made our stay in Rome so much more enjoyable.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a city view.

Just got back from Italy where we spent our last night at the Rome Cavalieri. This place was just too much like Vegas compared to the other high end Italian hotels we lodged with. This seemed odd considering the Cavalieri isn’t in the middle of a desert but just across the river from one of the world’s most interesting cities. Sadly they suffered from many of the problems that trouble Vegas hotels. Firstly, even though the hotel was quite pricy, many services were an additional change. For example, any guest could swim in the pool but sitting on one of the lounges around the pool cost 18 Euro per person, the gym was 20 Euros a day, WiFi was 25 Euros per 24 hour period (really, my international data roaming plan was cheaper), and so on. In Vegas I expect to be continuously subjected to the hard upsell even in the fanciest of hotels but this practice seemed very much out of the norm for Italy luxury hotels. I would have been happier to pay a higher room charge rather than be continuously pinged for more fees. It was like dealing with panhandlers.
Not to pile on, but the overall hotel services were not up to expectations. At the above mentioned pool, tables were not cleaned and trash was allowed to remain on the ground. Tables at the breakfast restaurant were bussed less frequently than one would expect at a high end establishment. Staff, outside of La Pergola, were grumpy, resentful, and surly. This last was surprising as our experience of Italian staff was that they were almost universally friendly and efficient.
On the positive side the place was decorated to the 9’s with some lovely artwork in halls and lobbies. Rooms were very nice and well appointed. As I mentioned above, the La Pergola Michelin three star restaurant made putting up with flaws of the hotel more tolerable. Otherwise the place was certainly not worth the high price tag. One would think with a Waldorf moniker they would have a bit more class.

Great place to escape the heat and hordes of tourists in Rome. Perched on the hills overlooking Rome we very much enjoyed the pool and the food. The restaurant on the top La Pergola is worth experiencing (despite it's multiple Michelin stars).
Ensure you have a Club Room (7th floor and above) with a Rome view as not sure a view of the radio tower at the rear is what you want.

Room Tip: Room view essential with a 7th floor or above optimal

This is a beautiful property, away from the hustle and bustle of historic Rome but only about a 20 min (free) bus ride away (runs hourly). The rooms, common area and staff rate five stars, but a few annoyances drop the rating in my mind. For example, to use the outdoor pool (not the spa, the pool...) you must pay €18. I have stayed at hundreds of hotels all over the world, and this was a first. Free WiFi is only available in the common area yet was very spotty. In room WiFi is €25 a night (free for Gold and Diamond). Upgrading to the Imperial Lounge is nice, but was €125/night. It does get you a reasonable buffet breakfast along with basic drinks, wine and snacks throughout the day, but don't let them convince you that you can make a dinner out of it, unless you are a very light eater. Also included is basic use of the spa and pool. If you have a non-view room (which aren't bad from the higher floors), the Imperial Lounge allows you a glimpse (from several outdoor patio tables) of the city.

One interesting in room feature: there is an extra "soundproof door" that helps deaden hallway noise.

We spent 2 nights in the center of Rome before moving to the Cavalieri for 3 additional nights. We were generously upgraded to an enormous suite with connecting room for other family traveling with us. As a diamond member we received free WiFi, entrance to pools and spa, 1/2 price champagne breakfast buffet, and drink vouchers----very generous. For these reasons, we got good value but the fees generally charged for these items are rather ridiculous. Service was pleasant but spotty ---rooms not ready at 3pm, staff on cell phones or daydreaming while kids ran wild in the spa pool etc. We appreciated the multilingual staff. After reading restaurant reviews, we did not trust them to deliver the quality of meal they were charging for at the 3 Michelin star restaurant. Room service was excellent and elegantly presented. The rooms with a Rome view also have a balcony that allows enjoyment of the live entertainment poolside each evening. This hotel is away from the tourist sites. To visit city center is about 15 Euro each way via taxi or use the hotel shuttle which runs hourly. They need to diversify their restaurant offerings. I don't think anyone eats $100/person meals breakfast lunch and dinner regardless of income. EVen I draw the line at a $40 hamburger at the pool. The breakfast brunch is worth it at least once (kids were free but 40 Eur/adult. Our stay was a real treat and one we won't soon forget thanks to the Hilton Honors program perks. This hotel would be a challenge with small kids due to no microwave/tiny spot in honor bar for personal items needing refrigeration, and geographically trapped with high cost meal choices/high fee for pool use.

Went into my Rome trip with high expectations for the Rome Cavalieri considering all the great reviews on this site...but it turned out to be a big disappointment.

Pro's
It's in a great park like setting with terrific views of Rome. The inside of the hotel is elegant and beautifully decorated and is a great break from the all the hustle and bustle of the main tourist areas. The staff (at all levels) was very helpful and friendly and was well versed in trying to make this a great experience. The shuttle bus into the main tourist areas was also a plus for us.

Con's
I'm a Gold Honors member but that really doesn't go far at this hotel (neither does Diamond). It almost seems like a nuisance to the staff and management. The main perk the status gets you is a few free drink tickets at the hotel bar and "access" to the outdoor pool and spa but if you want to use towels or a lounger at the outdoor pool you will have to pay for that privilege. As a other reviewers have noted, it does feel like you are being "nickeled and dimed" quite a bit on many things. On-site dinning is very expensive so be prepared for that (Example: A bowl of minestrone soup on the lower level restaurant is +20 Euros). We found only two restaurants within walking distance - a quite, casual Sicilian restaurant down the road near the corner of Piazzale delle Medaglie d'Oro and Via Alberto Cadlolo (which was quite good) and "The View" which is nearby as well.

I used points to book two discounted rooms for my family and I. The hotel staff went out of their way to make sure the rooms adjoined which was great. Since I used points to book, I didn't expect to get one of the rooms with a view. And as noted, the backside is a view of the radio tower as we got to experience.

We ran into problems on the 2nd night when a next door guest moved in and was loud, awake and smoking (on a non-smoking floor) for most of the night. Ventilation must be some type of problem for them because the smoke from that room was blowing directly into ours for most of the night. The staff readily accommodated us to new rooms on our 3rd night to alleviate the problem (They tried air freshener on the 2nd night). This time with a view, which as other reviewers have noted, was terrific and had no smoking problems.

We never had any problems with the bus since we always got to the stops early but many others weren't so lucky if they waited to the last minute. Expect to be left behind if you aren't early.

Wifi was free because of the Gold membership but we had difficulty accessing at times.

Check out was a slow 20 minute experience for us. Part of the problem seems to be with billing. The two guests in front of us had an issue which took time to resolve. Then it turned out to be a problem for us as well because our bill was in error because of a 350 Euro dinner charge inappropriately charged to our room. That was cleared up but took a long time to resolve.

Overall, mixed feelings with this experience. Was expecting such a great experience but it wasn't delivered.

My family and I were there 3 nights but probably won't return on subsequent visits.
