Owner description: Picture more than 300,000 Roman spectators cheering chariot races inside this huge Roman circus, which was built to entertain emperors during the time of Imperial Rome.

We visited with our kids and had fun goofing around and making races like the Romans did. The racetrack itself is fairly plain now so you have to add imagination.

Imagine walking by the Circo Massimo and seeing a gladiatorial contest taking place.

I thought I had travelled back in time when I happened across the unexpected spectacle of two groups of men dressed as gladiators, surrounded by fair maidens, going hell for leather with wooden swords and spears. While it was play acting for the benefit of a large, modern day audience, there were some serious hits taking place. All this added to the drama, easily filling in the gaps in your imagination to provide a sense of witnessing something truly amazing.

I have no idea if it was a one off event or something that happens regularly, but for me, Circo Massimo well and truly came to life!

To begin with we hadn't even noticed that we were walking bast the Circus.

There isn't a great deal here and just seems like an ordinary green space.

It's nice to walk past, but nothing to explore here.

You need to research the history of this area beforehand in order to really enjoy it. There were no signs or descriptions anywhere, and there was not much to see. Just a long stretch of grass.

On the map it seems like an interesting area but there is nothing to see actually. It has its historical importance of course, but it's still quite pointless to visit.
Without trees/shadow this area can be especially warm during the summer.
