“Bernini's most famous work”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 4 June 2012

The four rivers fountain is Rome's most famous fountain, by far. He and the otehr great architect of his time , Borromini, were rivals, and luck had it that BOrromini was hired to create the church in front of this fountain, St. Agnese in Agony, and they reciprocally made snubs to each other in their works. Bernin sculpted a figure in front of the church who hides his face in horror with his hand to shade his view of the Borromini church, which people of thw age said looked as if the facade would fall down on them as it was of a concave form, typical of baroque. Borromini in turn snubbed the fountain by adding a statue of St. Agnes on top who looks away from the fountain, as if it weren't even minimally interesting. The four rivers depicted are the Ganges, the Amazon, the Danube and the Nile...probably the most photographed fountain ever....

“Centerpiece of Piazza Navona”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 18 April 2012

Bernini does it again - another wondrous attraction in Rome, another signature work from Bernini. The Fountain of Four Rivers, which sits across from the Sant’Agnese in Agone chapel in the centre of Piazza Navona is remarkable. Along with the two smaller statue fountains –Moor fountain and Neptune fountain, this is arguably the single finest collection of water fountains in the world, only rivalled by the Michelangelo masterpiece – Trevi Fountain, interestingly just a short walk away.

The statue design is very interesting, representing the four river gods from four major river systems on four different continents of the world. This structure surrounds an Egyptian Obelisk and there is an equally interesting history surrounding the commissioning, financing and building of this statue involving Pope Innocent X and the Pamphiji family that visitors might find to be of interest before or while viewing this fountain.

Overall, this is one of the best fountains on offer in the city of Rome (if not the world). Along with its sister fountains, it makes Piazza Navona a remarkable place to visit, a must-see for all visitors to Rome.

Hint: Visit the Fountain of Four Rivers at least two times while you are in Rome. It is beautiful in the daytime with Sant’Agnese in Agone or other angles of Piazza Navona in the background. However, it is equally beautiful at night when the fountain is lit up against the dark backdrop.
