I have stayed here several times a year for the last decade for business trips to Rome. The staff are attentive and know the guests by name. They will recommend and make reservations for local restaurants. The hotel is spotlessly clean and comfortable.

Room Tip: Rooms in the back are quieter.

This was our second stay at HP. Since the first stay in 2010, the hotel has maintained it's exceptionally clean, quiet rooms to a high standard. We were in a standard room #10 which was located over a side street where a restaurant and heavy foot traffic meant some noise. The windows and shutters blocked the noise completely. Just remember to close them both before retiring. The walls are a little on the thin side and you can hear other guests but that is because we were in a lower floor room but it was not a problem to us.
The staff at the desk was wonderfully helpful with each request. The breakfast room with terrace is a real oasis. The breakfast is continental and the service is very attentive.
In 2010 we were frustrated with the internet service. This time the connection was quick with no interruptions. Also, there is a lot more activity on this via Orso than in 2010 with restaurants and people walking from Piazza Navona. The shops and restaurants along the street along with the street traffic was an added bonus which we did not mind at all.
The only other service that would have made the HP even better is for a safe in each room.
The location cannot be beat. 10 minutes walk to Castello San Angelo and another 10 minutes to the Vatican. 5 minutes walk to Piazza Navona and the rest of the historic center is there for the walking.
The 4 for sleep quality is because of the bed. Very hard mattress but this rating does not affect the overall 5 star rating of the hotel. It is otherwise a great value with a great location and staff.
We would return to Hotel Portoghesi if we came back to Rome.

Room Tip: Close your windows and shutters at night. Learn the back streets to get to the Vatican area and the Corso that leads to the Spanish Steps and Piazza del Popolo. The location of the HP is so good and using the out of the way streets means more to see on your way to the sites. Ask to stay on a higher floor. We were in 46 in 2010 and 10 this year. Prefer the higher floor but did not mind the 1st floor.

Had a great stay. Affordable, clean, friendly & great location.
Booked a junior suite for a great price compared to anywhere else in Rome. It was a very large corner room #08.The staff at the desk made dinner reservations & taxi reservations for the Airport. They gave great advise on where to get great wines by the glass, (not just house wines). Beds are your typical European, two singles pushed together. That is why I gave 3 stars for sleep quality.
Rooms are on the street but the windows are excellent for noise reduction.

I have always loved this hotel -- have stayed there 2-3 times over 20 years. Great location if you want to be near the Baroque Rome highlights, and very helpful staff. Rooms are compact but very clean and comfortable.

We liked our room on the 3rd floor(European) - that's the 4th floor to Americans.

This hotel is located on a street with lively foot traffic. The first night, I did not realize that I needed to close the shutters and found my self awakened by a variety of sounds. The following night, I wised up, closed/locked the shutters and slept in blissful silence and darkness. Chalk it up to a first night in Italy after a long flight. If you travel in Italy, you would no doubt have known that many hotels have heavy wooden shutters that block out light and a good deal of sound!

The desk staff was always welcoming and helpful. The breakfast room, on the top floor, is pleasant and in nice weather offers a roof-top patio for breakfast. A wide variety of choices are offered in a choose-your-own style. Coffee (espresso, cappuccino, latte, tea or American coffee were offered and delivered by a friendly hostess.

The hotel guests appeared to be from a wide variety of counties and each morning I enjoyed the conversations from a variety of nations.

Everything was lovely, clean, and comfortable. The only reason I did not give it the highest rating is that it lacked the charming, unique quality that I look for in my 5 dot ratings. That said, I'd stay here again. It was a good value for the money, a great location, and the FORNO (bakery) at the nearby corner was a great way to find the hotel AND offered delicious baked goods for late-night noshing!
