The castle is well preserved on the outside, but there are very few pieces of furniture, weapons or art that remain inside. The views from the top are mesmerizing, as one can gaze to Rome's scenery all around. I recommend you book in advance in order to save the time in line.

My sister and I ended up visiting on a whim on a free afternoon on our trip to Rome. We were so glad we did. It was so interesting to see how the building changed from Hadrian's Tomb to a medieval fortress to a renaissance palace. In addition to history and beautiful interiors, the Castel also had some great views! after getting the panorama at the top, we didn't need to climb the dome at St. Peter's, which is just a short walk away.

We weren't able to take a guided tour due to when we arrived, but the free interactive app was the next best thing! The whole site has very strong free wifi and we were able to download the app easily enough. The app then would notify you when you were close to a sign post and would tell you the information about that area. Unlike most audio guides, you didn't have to hold it right next to your ear, which can get annoying. The bluetooth capability also enabled it to direct you along the tour and tell you when you were there. No looked around frustrated for tiny numbers! We had some issues getting it to play on my iPhone, but it played on my sister's google pixel just fine. We had no difficulty following the suggested path and never got lost. I'd definitely recommend the Castel to anyone!

We visited the Castel SantAngelo with a guide and loved the tour. There are so many hidden surprises so allow a few hours . It is very close to Vatican city so I would suggest visiting both on the one day

We passed the Castel San Angelo several times during our visit but never ventured inside... but we were walking along the Tiber one night and took a stroll across the foot bridge and waterfront walk ways... cafes, restaurants, artists, musicians.
It was very beautiful night.

Besides a very interesting history, the top of the castle has some of the best views in Rome! Lots and lots of steps....be careful if someone in your party has trouble with lots of stairs.
