This is a Basilica that means an important great church. It is very ancient and it is strangely in the middle of the square. It menas that it is like an island and the facade is only one of 4 sides you can easily see. The outside but also the inside are really nioce. The oppening hours are really long. And it is free like most of roman churches, though they are often better than a museum of another foreign city,

A beautiful church which afforded me an opportunity to have my confession heard with no waiting due to the large amount of priests at the ready.

of Rome's cathedrals dedicated to the Virgin Mary. That's what my notes said (from one of many travel sources.) We were tired and did we really NEED to see another church? We almost skipped it, but we were only a block away and forced ourselves to just peek in. We ended up staying over an hour, sitting in the pews, and then slowly walking all around to take in all the beauty. My head was spinning from all the gilt and marble - breathtaking! The beautiful 5th century mosaics are some of the oldest representations of Mary in Rome. The 16th century coffered ceiling is magnificent. There are numerous paintings and frescoes and a great Triumphal Arch. Down a few steps is the Reliquary of the Holy Crib (aka Crypt of Nativity) in a beautiful gold and silver case. There's a marble statue of a kneeling Pope that we found moving. We found it impossible to just "peek in" at this wonderful cathedral. It should be on your must see list.

This place is truly a marvel, but the Basilica is not well lit, so best to see while the sun is high and able to shine through the windows. The mosaic work is breathtaking.

Prior to visiting rome my wife and I wanted to visit this church along with San Palo, and San Giovanni. It was amazing to be in such a Beautiful church. The history of the church was interesting and the architecture was amazing. Highly recommended if you have 1-2 hours to spare.
