This beautiful basilica is dedicated to the Virgin Mary. It is absolutely stunning inside. There is a main church, with smaller chapels in it. Mass was going on in some of the smaller chapels. There are old time free standing confessionals and priests ready to hear confession. There is an area where a piece of the manger is on display. Many visitors (myself included) commented that the area where the manger is on display felt very sacred. Below the church, there are guided tour (for a small fee) that show a house that the church was built on top of. It is very interesting, and we all enjoyed seeing what remained of this Roman home. If you are wearing shorter shorts/skirt and have bare arms, the guards will provide a free paper shawl to wrap on shoulders or waist. This was one of my favorites places in Italy. There is no charge for admission and photography was permitted even though the signs posted said it wasn't.

“Wonderful back story”
Reviewed 5 August 2014

This church is magnificent and the largest in the world dedicated to Mary. She came to a priest in a dream and a miracle followed and the church was built. It's a great story...

This Basilica looks nothing from the outside but step inside and words are not enough to describe what you see. This was the first Balisilica we saw and were left speechless, in total awe of the ornate decoration, marble and statues.
Definitely worth a visit but take care with the beggars who are outside.

“Attend Sunday mass”
Reviewed 5 August 2014

Like many churches in Rome this is a highly decorative with beautiful artworks and ornate smaller chapels. If you attend Sunday Mass you will be alongside local Italian families dressed up for church. Don't forget dress modestly and cover you shoulders.
