“The Popes Church - as good as St Peters but quieter”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 20 November 2013

We enjoyed a lovely walk through the streets of Rome to see this magnificent church. We were staying at Campo de Fiori, so this was a little out of our way, but well worth seeing. The statues of the apostles were huge, and each was an amazing piece of artwork. The Basilica is just huge, and would easily fit some of the smaller Roman churches inside a single wing.

This is often referred to as "The Popes Church", and you will see it is the equal of St Peters at the Vatican, without all of the crowds, and football crowd mentality. Far more peaceful, just as beautiful, a little less showy, and a must see when in Rome if you like churches.

“Beautiful art”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 16 November 2013

All of Rome is an art gallery and this basilica is no exception. Gorgeous statuary, wonderful mosaic flooring, beautiful paintings and the original Pope's church. Well worth a visit. If visiting the cloister, the artifacts are fairly mundane other than the beautiful tapestries. They are lovely.

“Low traffic, high art”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 14 November 2013

It was a less crowded and more peaceful version of the Vatican; visitors treated this space with the respect an iconic religious venue deserves. See this, for a breath of true revelation.
Within easy walk of the Coliseum.

“So Beautiful”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 13 November 2013

One of the most ornate and beautiful Basilicas. It takes a while to get there by bus but it is definitely worth it. Across the street is another church which contains the steps from the Roman Praetorium where Jesus was condemned.

“Rome’s Cathedral is Magnificent”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 13 November 2013

Roman's call it their church. The church of the Bishop of Rome (the Pope) was very majestic with its stunning architecture, arches, chapels, and naves. The ceiling itself is a remarkable work of art as well as the line of intricately beautiful statues of all the apostles that leads to the main alter. And, the floor has an amazing decorative inlay of marble throughout.

This elegant detail from the floor to the ceiling is just as awe-inspiring as St. Peter's but without the crowds, a much more peaceful experience.

The Basilica di San Giovanni in Laterano is easily accessible by metro (stop San Giovanni), has free entry, and photos are allowed. Definitely a must visit. We combined it with a visit to several of the catacombs (just a bus ride down the road) for a very enjoyable day.
