When you look at things you just think "its a wall" but if you stand back for a moment and imagine that you built it, how proud would you be!? It is an amazing piece of craftsmanship and worth seeing.

This is a most hospitable and affordable accommodation, run by a religious congregation, situated 6-8 minute walk from the Vatican, near buses and St Peter's train station. Rooms are en-suite and very clean. Most have a balcony. It is less costly than a hotel, as there is no kettle, TV or hairdryer, (bring your own kettle, coffee etc). Meals are delicious, well balanced, varied and very plentiful. Schools and groups return annually. We stayed some years ago, we loved it again, and we will be back.
Sections of the wall are still in place and the history behind it is amazing. Imagine how many battles may have took place or who actually lived behind the wall. What emperors? Who famous in Roman history actually walked the walls to defend it.
Incredible history and amazing construction of this very impressive part of history, well worth a look.
In several areas of the city you will come across sections of the original fortified walls of Rome. There is a nice section by the St. John Lateran church. You can really imagine the entire city surrounded by these walls and the feel of ancient Rome. There are entrance arches and guard posts. If you are touring on foot, you will eventually see some of these walls.
Anyone going to the Vatican would come across these walls. Great architecture! There are a few restaurants surrounding so it is a nice walk to or from lunch.
