When looking for a hotel, I always value 4 things : a good breakfast, a spacious room with a good bed, no nonsense service and a good location for whatever the reason is I'm staying there. This scores good to very good on 3 of these criteria.
The breakfast is not as in the big hotel groups but is definitely above average according to Italian standards. Warm stuff : eggs, bacon and tomatoes. There is fresh fruit and a reasonable choice of meat (salami, ham, chicken, ...). Different sorts of bread, (Industriol) yoghurt, different kinds of cereals and some rolls for the sweet tooth.
The room I got (106) was rather small but the bed was comfortable. From the map of the rooms, I deducted that most of the other rooms are somewhat larger so maybe check if yoy have the xx6 (I assume the layout is similar at the other levels) room and change if you have the option.
The service was very friendly and most, including the content of the mini-bar is complementary. Also the reservation experience (through booking.com) was impeccable. The hotel responded privately with some extra information and taxi service from the airport (50 EUR or 70 when in the evening - this is the standard fee).
Location is convenient. Within walking distance of the Trevi Fountain, Piazza navona, Colloseum, .. We even walked up to the Vatican.
If you are looking for a restaurant in the neighbourhood, I can recommend Moma (see one of my other reviews here).

Dear Marc V,
We wish to thank you for taking the time to write your very good feedback and for rewarding our strong points, breakfast above the average with very fresh food (bread also, it comes from a local bakery every day), Guest-Oriented service and very comfortable rooms.
Hotel Britannia is a small Famliry reality in an old small palace turned into Hotel, so what you see today is the result of a reconversion architecture, offering the advantage of very individual, peculiar areas: we acknowledge our rooms are not big (ranging anyway from regular classic rooms to larger superior witho or without terrace up to our Junior Suite) but welcome you in a finely decorated ambiance, clean, fully equipped -as you confirm, thank you- and each of them comes complete with a comfortable bathroom.
We think that a Guest is Guest from the moment he contacts us for the first time of for any questions after booking and before his arrival, so we are happy ro help with any requests and the private airport pick-up and/or transfer back to the airport are a 24 hours available option.
the rest lays outside the door: the beauties of Rome at your fingertips.
Thank you for using your feedback to help more travellers with sugestions.
In the event you ever come to Rome again please contact us for direct booking under special conditions or browse our website searching the best available offers.
Best regards,
Simona Rongione, Guest Care - Hotel Britannia

This is a difficult review, the hotel has definite positives and negatives. Lets start with the positives; clean and stylish with a very attentive staff. Our room had a terrace which was wonderful; the area is very quiet and we used it alot. Little touches like the fishbowl, bottle of wine and rubber ducky were cute. Taxis arrives quickly and werent expensive. Breakfast was fantastic with numerous options. Now the bad - the bathroom was good size but had a number of problems - I'm six foot and the showerhead was 5 foot with plenty of room to raise the showerhead; curious to why it was placed there. Didn't matter, water temperature was a guess, either scalding or frigid. Horrid lighting to shave or put on makeup. And lastly it smelled of mold, couldn't figure out from where. Second, the AC unit was on for 10 seconds, off for 20 seconds. All. night. long. Incredibly annoying. But worst was the location; although not far from most things certainly it wasn't close and there were tons of options closer to the more vibrant parts of the city; in this area there were few choices of restaurants or bars that were good. It just isn't in a nice part of the city for dining, shopping, eating or sightseeing and for that reason I would stay elsewhere. The staff does an excellent job where they are but there is no reason to see this part of the city when travelling from a distance to see the city; you just do not get a feel for the city staying here. We would have spent more and stayed in a better area knowing what we do now.

Thank you for you review, SCDevsFan, although difficult to write, you say, and difficult to answer, we say.
We're happy you appreciated lots of positive features that are our strong points making our Guests satisfied, so we regret any disappointments one of them may feel and try to explain or we simply improve. You are a rather tall man. The place where the showerhead is comes from a calculation of the standards, including the height of the shower box walls; some of our bathrooms have adjustable height sliding shower, but the highest position stands where no water could squirt out of the box. We often house even taller men and actually never had much worry about that but we take the opportunity your critique gives us to find a solution for very tall Guests.
The water temperature can be easily found with a correct manipulation we usually show our Guests entering rooms with new bathrooms, like yours was; sorry if we did not with you and we invite any guests to call our 24 hours available Staff for any questions or needs. Lighting is pointed and strong, each bathroom offers large lighted-up mirrors above the sinks and also adjustable service mirrors but we will try again each single bathroom to understand the problem you had.
The AC issue is difficult to understand, the interval you report lets us think about a malfunction we would have fixed, otherwise it might have been the simple on and off upon reaching the selected temperature. Mold smell, well it could happen in any building in the city center that odours flow back from the pipes, we do not know if the smell was really constant or just an event, hydraulic checks and maintenace works are done nearly on a daily basis, we'll check the issue.
The neighborhood where we are, finally, disappointed you more than the bad inconveniences above. We cannot discuss the feelings about an area, we are in the quiet side of a very central district in Rome and monuments and must-see places are at our Guests' fingertips, of course when a traveller chooses a Hotel he must be aware of what he's searching exactly, some like quietness on the edge of everything, some like being inside the vitality, it depends on what one means when saying "feel of the city" relating to a Hotel located on top of the Viminale Hill (one of Seven), 900m far from Piazza Venezia, 100m from Piazza della Repubblica, 15 minutes frm from Piazza di Spagna and 500m from Piazza Barberini and Via Veneto, 15 minutes from Colosseum. Where we exactly are can be easily found before to book and we are sorry you did not enjoy your stay, nevertheless we thank you for giving us a high score that rewards the good things.
Best Regards,

Stayed here for 3 nights in April. The hotel is very comfortable, the room was not very big but quite cozy, with bathroom almost located in the wardrobe but still usable :) Although the restaurant (or more a lobby bar) is small, breakfast was very good and excedeed my expectations. The hotel is located near the Termini station, and you can reach the Capitol Hill and Colloseum in approx.15-20 min walk. The only sad point was that the hotel management haven't noticed my birthday :(

Dear Konstantin G,
we wish thank you for choosing Hotel Britannia for your days in Rome and thank you for enjoying comforts available to all our Guests. You were in a nice and elegant Superior Room with terrace, rather spacious and yes, the bathroom door is next to the wardrobe door and they are, for a deisgn choice, identical: the first wacky idea of each Guest entering that room is that they have no bathroom, but they have it: comfortable and fully equipped.
We use to acknowledge that our rooms and public areas are not very very big because of the history of the small Palace where we are, converted into hotel in the latest years. the result is that areas and rooms are individual and have their own style, like the breakfast room that welcomes our Friends in an elegant salon surrounded by frescoes: one side, the small cozy bar. Everything is done to help our Guests enjoy their time in the Eternal City, waiting for them outside the door.
We regret we lost your birthday: we usually offer small touches to Guests celebrating their anniversaries, birthdays, very special events and we are very sorry we did not notice yours. if you ever come back, please contact us directly.
Thank you for your feedback.
Regards,
Simona Rongione, Guest Care Manager

The hotel is in a convenient area of Rome close to Termini station with easy access
to buses on Via Nazionale and metro on Republicca, and to hop on/hop off buses. Many shops and restaurants are within walking distance, yet its away from the crowds.
The lobby area is small but nice and the breakfast selection is excellent with great service. The front desk staff were also very helpful to answer any questions.
I was at first a little disappointed to be placed into a room which looks to have not been renovated and asked for an upgrade but the hotel was extremely busy due to the canonization of the pope. However the room was large as well as the bathroom, which is rare here. It was also very clean with nice classical décor. The bed was a bit hard and firm and some of the furniture looked a little rough around the edges. The biggest problem was very thin walls and could hear all the noise next door, so earplugs may be helpful.
Overall we enjoyed our stay at the Britannia. It was of reasonable value in an expensive city! I would stay again but maybe in one of the upgraded rooms.

Dear Greg M,
We wish to thank you for the positive feedback and high score, it is precious to us and we also wish to re-confirm that the Hotel is located in a small historical Palace converted into Hotel in its recent history in classical, liberty style and this might be read as old: moreover, renovation and maintenance works are done continuosly.
We regret you did not like your room initially but rooms are individual like people are so it can happen that a Guest does not match the room he has and we are always ready to do our best to help but, you are aware and thank you for understanding, those days were more than busy in Rome. Happy to read that you enjoyed your room and you stay, finally, between location, services, tranquility, top quality breakfast, Staff courteousness and devotion, cleanliness, comfortable bathrooms.
The Hotel offers soundproof systems, we will be happy to check if some areas need to be reviewed. Thank you for ever coming again and please, Greg M, contact us directly.
Best regards,
Simona Rongione, Guest Care Manager at Hotel Britannia, Roma.
