“It's all true, this is a great hotel!!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 9 July 2012

This is a short review, as there's nothing I can add that hasn't been said before.

We stayed here recently for 5 nights and booked directly with the hotel. Booking was straightforward and the price included daily buffet breakfast and wifi internet. I requested a quiet room on upper floor with a view of the Colosseum and was given such a room which we were really thankful.

The room had a king-size bed which was very comfortable and we had the best sleep while we were there, esp after a tiring day exploring all the wonders around the city. It's a rather spacious room as well. Bathroom was modern and there was plenty of hot water and good shower pressure.

There's an standalone air conditioner in the room and it was a bless to come back to a cool room after a hot summer day in rome.

Daily buffet breakfast was of high standard, consists of croissants and toasts, homemade jams, selection of cured meats and cheeses, and a good selection of cereals, dried fruits and nuts. Individual tubs of flavoured yoghurts were available too. There were at least 2 different juices available daily and of course hot coffee and tea.

Most importantly, the staff were amazing. All the staff were friendly and we were always greeted with smile. They do have a great team and this is what made our stay (and others here on TA) so special.

Location was very good, easily walkable to Colosseum and the colosseo metro station (5-10mins walk). There are a number of bus stops around which can get you to any of the main tourist attractions in town. There are a number of restaurants and bars around but it's situated at the back of a quiet road so it's not affected by noise of rowdy crowds. We felt safe all walking back to the hotel late at night.

I will certainly recommend this to anyone planning to visit Rome, and I will stay here if I return to Rome.

We enjoyed our 3 nights at Hotel Lancelot, the rooms were very cute and clean and it was nice to have a small balcony that overlooked the Colloseum! The staff were friendly and helpful, we just wish the breakfasts had more variety to them. Literally steps away from the Collosseum, which was nice. Would stay here again.

The only reason I didn't give this hotel five stars, is because our room wasn't what I'd consider "luxury". The beds were VERY comfy, but the room was nice, not fancy. However, who goes to Rome to stay in their room? :)

The only... and I do mean ONLY faux-pas we had regarding the hotel had NOTHING to do with hotel staff. I'd made arrangements for a private driver through the hotel. Our plane was late. I emailed the hotel to let the driver know, since we were already on the plane, and would have to turn off our electronics soon. When we arrived, we were an hour late. We looked EVERYWHERE for the driver. There are a plethora of drivers to pick people up, but we didn't see a sign for the hotel or our name. After fifteen to 20 minutes of searching, I finally called the number I'd been given for the driver. Nobody picked up. We took a cab. I felt bad, since management informed me he'd been there waiting, but we simply didn't connect. However, we weren't charged for the incident. Upon leaving we used this service again and everything went smoothly. We wound up taking a cab into Rome to arrive at the hotel that day. It all worked out.WARNING: DO NOT USE the drivers who approach you at the airport BEFORE you arrive at the taxi queue. They'll try to over charge you or change the rate. Get into the official Rome Taxi queue so you'll receive the flat rate.

Hotel Lancelot is great for anyone. I met business travelers, couples on honeymoons, as well as families. Staff really encourages people to set aside the usual "wall" we sometimes put up when it comes to mingling with strangers. I met folks from India, the US, Malaysia, etc. The round tables where breakfast is served are really wonderful in encouraging introductions and meaningful conversation between guests.

Breakfast is delightful. The staff is attentive about refreshing the plates of food and everything is fresh and you really get to have what Italians enjoy for breakfast. The prosciutto ham and croissants were some of my favorite things to have each morning. They also cater to children by offering condiments and cereals more preferable to younger tastes which include fruity or chocolate selections. Individual Nutella packets were great, as well as four or five different jams/spreads for breads. Croissants, hard air-rolls, and a unique cake-like marble bread that's not too sweet were popular. Sometimes they served hard-boiled eggs, and the juice selections all tasted freshly-squeezed. Delicious! Plan for a leisurely breakfast to start your Roman adventure daily, and you won't be disappointed!

Dinner is optional, but really is an excellent value and absolutely top-notch. Staff is very prompt about posting the evenings selections. We ate there three times during our 10 day stay, and each meal was excellent. We had a breaded chicken dish once, then twice we had beefsteak. Beef was most tender and delicately flavored. The breaded chicken was presented somewhat like a veal cutlet and wasn't greasy at all. Mr. Khan, one of the owner's family, considers himself a "cook", not a chef. (That made me smile!) He plans each culinary experience. Dessert is included and ranges from sweet, sugary concoctions to refreshing melons and fruits or comforting cheese/cracker plates. The most memorable delight I experienced was a salad one night. Spelt salad was presented in a disc-shape, composed of spelt (an ancient Roman grain much like whole oats or barley) mixed with fresh basil, mozzarella cheese, tiny, sweet tomatoes, and tasty olives. I can tell you, I've never had a salad like this before, and it was one of the top culinary experiences I had during my whole trip! Mr. Khan later informed me it was the first time it had been on the menu. I told him it was "a keeper"! The evening before we left, he shared his recipe and even gave me to dry bags of spelt for myself and my friend to take home to try! What a lovely expression of hospitality, indeed! Reservations must be made for dinner prior to 4pm. Dinner is served at one seating: 7:30pm. When weather permits, it's held in a lovely garden-type setting outdoors, away from the hectic noise and traffic of the city.

If your stay in Rome exceeds three days, you'll want to purchase a Roma card which entitles a user entrance to three archaeological sites/ museums, discounts on other entries, and free public transport during its validity. Usually, these cards are purchased at archaological book-stores, ticket offices, or sites. However, Hotel Lancelot had them available for us at the front desk! This cut down on standing in long lines. They only ask that you have exact change during your purchase. Be sure to work this out, as it saves a lot of hassle in having to locate and purchase the cards in less-friendly and rushed environments.

Our room was clean and serviced daily. We did have to request extra soap/shampoo one day, but that was our only need during the entire stay. The room was spacious, and though small, the bathroom was more than adequate. The windows are nice and large, though we didn't have much of a view. There was an antique wardrobe in which we found extra pillows and blankets packed for our use in a most hygiene fashion. The furniture was a little worn, but again... this isn't a LUXE resort. This is a wonderful family-run hotel with simple, clean services.

Staff was honest, up-front, and ever pleasant. Several times I received suggestions on where to eat at dinner. There are some area restaurants that are great. One in particular comes to mind... Naumachia. I had calamari, grilled veggies, and a dessert. Management even gifted us with a free dessert liqueur, since we were on our way to a ballet that night.

In reflection, please stay here is you have children. Stay if you want a family and relaxed feel to your trip. Stay for a great breakfast and/or dinner, and stay if you want Rome at your doorstep with smiling staff to welcome you!

Room Tip: If you want a view of the Colosseum, ask for the 6th Floor with a balcony. Be sure to make your req...

Great location, near the Coliseum... The staff is very friendly - the rooms are very clean. The breakfast is very good. We had a room with a balcony - wonderful! We had dinner one evening - it was delicious - Veal Saltimbocca. Yummy - I would definitely recommend this hotel for anyone travelling to Rome

Room Tip: All rooms are lovely. If you cannot get a room with a balcony there is also a public balcony on the...

My husband has stayed here for business in the past and loved the ambience and location so this time on our personal vacation, we stayed here too. I agreed with him: attentive warm staff, good linens on a comfortable bed, generous breakfast, and a 2 block walk to either the Colisseum or San Giovanni Cathedral - what more could you want for such a reasonable price?

Very clean, friendly small hotel in a perfect location. We booked two rooms for our family of five and were not disappointed by the tripadvisor reviews. The brick courtyard is full of flowers and the friendly, helpful service inside was much appreciated as we arrived with little sleep at a very early hour. The hotel was ready for us to check in early and suggested we grab breakfast. A very large variety for breakfast. Rooms were not fancy but clean and quiet. We ate our first dinner in the courtyard and the food was good. Would for sure recommend this hotel to other Rome travelers.

A lovely family run hotel. Clean, and amazingly quiet for the middle of Rome. Rooms are basic but clean and with everything you need. Front desk staff are incredibly helpful and nice. Breakfast is generous and excellent. Everything high quality. Fresh breads, local cured meats and cheeses, hard boiled eggs, natural/home made jams, fresh fruit, tons of fruit juices and a variety of hot drinks. This is a totally unpretentious, honest, high quality hotel perfect for the traveller who likes "just right" but not super fancy accommodations. One very pleasant surprise: The excellent quality dinners. We ate at quite a few highly recommended restaurants in Rome and found the food uniformly bad. We ate dinner twice at the hotel and it was excellent. The "cook" (who refuses to be called a chef), prepares fresh, delicious food superior to much that is found in local restaurants. One exception, very nearby is Il Clementini which was by far the best restaurant food we had in Rome. It's just around the corner, and excellent for lunch or dinner. Don't waste time and money elsewhere . . . stick with these two for meals, and relax and enjoy your stay at this excellent hotel. Only suggestion - upgrade bedspreads and add a sheet above the blanket as well as under, and add extra pillows. All was clean and fine but the bed felt a little sparse.
