Found this restaurant on trip advisor and thought we would give it a try.It was far and away the best food we had during our stay in Rome. The service was excellent and matched the food which was delicious. We were in a group of 4 and had found the food in Rome to be on the expensive side. Although this restaurant cannot be classed as cheap ,compared to the other restaurants it was good value because of the quality.

“Definitely one of the best meals I have ever had”
Reviewed 25 November 2013

I ended up at Bottega Trattoria De Santis during my latest stay in Rome. My local friends chose it as it's one of their favourite restaurants in the city and I have to say, it's definetely one of mine too now.

The atmosphere is very warm but modern and stylish at the same time. The owners are very welcoming and make you feel like at home (and they are English speakers too).

I decided to go for a seafood dinner and couldn't do better choice. We shared four different starters including: sautee octopus with potatoes, seafood carpaccio, sautee clams and mussels and some stunning cod croquettes (which taste I can't even describe). Everything was delicious.
As mains, I shared some seabass with potatoes, courgettes and some sort of crusty gallettes and a mixed calamari and vegetables tempura. Again, delicious.

Surprisingly (and luckily) we still had room for desserts so wee tasted: a sort of pistacchio semifreddo, some fresh fruits with pastry and homemade chantilly custard and a warm chocolate fondant with vanilla ice cream. Spot on.

A final chat with Federico (one of the owners) before leaving, reiterating once again how delicious everything was.

The bill was as nice as the meal - amazing value and quality for money.

I couldn't ask for more from a rainy evening in Rome.

“Friendly proprietor and staff”
Reviewed 1 September 2013

Found this restaurant with the Tripadvisor City app. It is about a 15 minute walk to the Piazza Portamaggiore.

We came for lunch just as the restaurant was opening. The dishes are home cooked, rustic styles, prepared in large dishes. The owner explained that we can select our own mixture of dishes (entree, side dishes) and would be charged depending on size and mixture. Most of the plates we assembled were around 6 Euros each. The Italian rolls were 0.50 Euro and the drinks are reasonable (1.5 Euro for a 1.5 liter bottle of water). Some of the dishes we got were pasta with bolognese sauce, meat lasagna, grilled eggplant, chickory, meatballs, salads. A large seafood salad with morsels of shrimp, baby octopus, and mussels in greens, with a balsamic vinaigrette was 6 Euros and was large enough to be shared by four people.

The food was well-prepared, fresh, tasty. The restaurant is air-conditioned. The wait staff is helpful and friendly. For our entire group, 4 adults and 5 children, we paid about 60 Euros including bottled water.

“Maybe a bad night....”
Reviewed 18 August 2013

We went on a night when they were understaffed, so this could be unfair, but we were underwhelmed not only with the service (which was understandable I guess…but really we were left completely alone for 20-25 minutes at a stretch and had to get out of our chairs to track folks down), but also with the food. The Carbonara was odd, with delicious bacon, but just kind of terrible sauce…so cheesy, almost like Velveeta. The wine was overpriced. The sea bass (so-called) was not at all tasty and full of bones. The one great thing was the Octopus and Potato antipasto. Again, I believe this could be a nice place, but we had a not such a nice experience.

“A really Roman meal”
Reviewed 7 July 2013

We're in Rome again, after 9 years, and the Euro has dipped and dived along with the spirits of the Romans. So it was a pleasure to be greeted like regulars when we visited this restaurant recommended by our apartment's owner.
We ordered a very affordable, by Canadian standards, bottle of Sicilian white. Crisp and clean with lots of mineral notes. There are three Sicilian whites on the menu here and they're all very nice.
We started by sharing the sea-bass carpaccio which had a small salad of baby greens and a wonderfully balanced dressing. My wife had ordered a spaghetti with squash flowers but received instead the melanzana and swordfish pasta dish. We're pretty easy going and while she would have loved the other dish totally rolled with the error, there were a few during the meal for which we received profuse apologies, and this seems to be par for the course. My housemade gnocchi with mussels and clams, that I did order, were lovely. The gnocchi are extruded rather than hand-rolled which lends them a "licorice Nibs" sort of sheen and texture. They were well cooked and nicely proportioned.
We were so full that we couldn't order dessert, however we plan to visit tomorrow night and so may have more to add!
