Me and my boyfriend recently spent a few weeks travelling around Europe and this was the hotel we were most looking forward to with its 4* rating, this was going to be our luxury for a couple of days! The Grounds really are beautiful and the first impression was very good. HOWEVER, We were not shown to our rooms, a key was thrust into our hands and a point indicated where our room was, the staff were blunt and quite unhelpful. The room itself was not 4* quality, it was in great need of decorating! Walls really were paper thin, and were situated right next to the restaurant so the quality of sleep was awful. Im sure if you've paid for the very best suites then you will get the luxury that this hotel boasts to have, it seems this hotel puts all their efforts into functions rather than the hotel side of things. All in all it was our worst stay and a huge disappointment.

Everything could have been sooo beautiful...

We had a really nice room (Number 115) right on top of the mountain. A Knight's Armor was placed next to the entrance of our room, the breakfast was delicious, a white horse was walking through the adjacent woods (literally!!!) and you could hear the birds singing the whole morning - as well as you could hear your neighbors snoring the whole night, or talking, or whatever they would do in their room. (if you don't care, just add an additional point to the rating)

Room Tip: If you stay there and want to get some sleep make sure that you get a quiet room...

We're from UK and stayed here 3 nights and absolutely loved it.. it's really beautiful, you can see that it would be a great place to have weddings at - it's got real character. The shuttle bus (about 40 minutes or so depending on the traffic in Rome centre), which did a pick-up/drop off at the corner of Piazza del Risorgimento and Via de Porta Angelica, was great. We enjoyed the contrast of having days in the city and and peace and tranquility in the middle of the Italian countryside to look forward to in the evening. We booked a basic room and it was that but it was nice enough and had everything you'd want. There was a lovely breakfast buffet with fantastic fresh fruit salad everyday and pastries, yoghurt, cereal, cheese, meat etc. With this hotel at this price you make the choice between staying in the centre of Rome in a more basic hotel or staying in a nicer hotel with the disadvantage of being 30-40 minutes drive away. We didn't hear any barking dogs and we didn't stay at a weekend so probably missed out on any noise from wedding parties as previous reviews have mentioned. We found the staff helpful and we thought this hotel was really good value for money.

Relais Castrum Boccea seemed like a good choice when we booked it on Trip Advisor. The hotel has a good price and looks amazing on the photos. Location looked quite good (just next to the Vatican) on Trip Advisor's map. But when we double checked the address on Google Maps after booking we realised that the hotel is outside Rome and 30-40 minutes driving from the Vatican City. This in my opinion is the hotel's responsibility as they should manage the websites providing booking services on their behalf. When we got there and explained what happened, we asked for some kind of compensation and they offered their bus shuttle for free which was nice considering the location issue. But if you want to go to Rome everyday you only have one chance in the morning as the bus usually drives you to Rome around 11ish and comes back around 7pm. If you want an afternoon snooze or if you want to go back to Rome to have dinner you don't have a choice unless you have a car.
In regards to the rooms, they are very traditional and clean. Breakfast was disappointing: loads of cakes and not many choices of bread or cheese, ham etc. Also staff was slow to get more food when the trays were empty!

A highlight of this hotel is that it is in the middle of beautiful regional Italy. Also we had dinner in their restaurant and the antipasto was fantastic. Pasta was OK.

Overall a very average experience.

This is less of a hotel than an event location. Every night we have been here there has been an event with loud music (many many poorly sung Abba songs) and the staff having to cater to the event than to the hotel guests. The idea of having a quiet drink in the gardens is impossible.
The staff were all polite and helpful but always seemed overworked.
The rooms are small but clean. We had neighbours next to us who you could hear when they went to the toilet. The room also had no chest of draws so for the three nights we have been here we have had to live out of our suitcases on the floor.
We got free internet which was reasonably fast but was stupidly complex to register and continually log on to.
We took the bus once into the city but opted for taking our own car in as it was cheaper and less limiting.
In summary, I would not stay here again. I came to be in a peaceful rural setting just outside of Rome, not an unwilling observer of wedding discos.

We stayed here as a couple for 3 nights in September 2012. We picked this place as we wanted to stay just outside of Rome in a pretty place - the pictures of this place looked amazing - very unusual and exactly my cup of tea!

Upon arrival, we checked in and were taken to our room. The room was rather basic but had enough space and was clean. We stayed in the room at the top of the hill. Initially, we thought this was great as it was out of the way from all the other rooms, but we soon realised it wasn't all that great - there was a wedding taking place on the first night and the reception was at the top of the hill. We could hear quite a lot of noise from the room, but it subsided just after midnight, so it didn't keep us awake and actually it was quite nice to see a lovely wedding. However, at around 2am, we both awoke to a barking dog, which continued barking until we got up. Although it wasn't nearby, it woke us on numerous occasions throughout the night. We let it slide and assumed it wouldn't happen again. Wrong. The following night, the dog barked again all night. The next morning, I spoke to the lady on reception to advise that the dog had kept us awake two nights in a row, and she said unfortunately they couldn't do anything about it, as it belonged to the farm next door. We mentioned it to another couple at breakfast and they said they hadn't heard the dog, but I think because we were up on the top of the hill in a separate room, the sound carried. The third night, the dog didn't bark until so late into the night - I wonder if something had been said and the owner brought him in.

Negatives aside, the room was clean and had the basics. Nothing special. The breakfast was rather limited but there was enough of it and there was seating outside.

We ate at the hotel on the second night - there was seating outside and a band were playing with some disco lights. The atmosphere was nice as was the food. However, there was a pesky cat that kept begging for food - but not only did it beg for food from the floor, if you tried to ignore it, it jumped up at your lap and dug its claws into your legs. Rather difficult to enjoy the evening with this going on, which was a shame as we would have stayed and had a couple more drinks. Instead, we bought a bottle of wine and sat on our terrace furniture.

There was a shuttle bus service from the hotel into the centre of Rome, which you had to book the night before, and I think it was 10 euros each a day. The buses were air conditioned and spacious and the drivers were friendly and calm in the heavy traffic. They only had one drop off and one collection time per day, so you had to make sure you were back at the collection point in time, but the driver did wait for some guests that were about 15 minutes late. The shuttle bus was great for us though - we had thought about hiring a car but glad we didn't as the roads were a nightmare and finding parking would have been tricky.

A nice touch was the bag courier service, where on the last day, you left your bags at reception in the morning and a company arranged a drop off time to bring them to you at the airport. This worked really well for us as our flight wasn't until the evening and a locker would have been expensive and difficult to find. I can't remember exactly what we paid for this service, but it wasn't a lot and was well worth it for the convenience

Altogether, Relais Castrum Boccea didn't quite live up to our expectations. Whilst it was nice in some things, others really let it down. If I were to return to Rome, I'd probably find somewhere else, which is a shame as this place looked amazing from the photos.

Room Tip: Try to avoid the one at the top of the hill if you want a good night's sleep!
