“good location but poor rooms”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 6 July 2014

Location:The hotel is located on a busy street that offer several breakfast restaurants. not too far away from all attractions, 5-10 Euro to major attractions. Most importantly its located in a safe area far away from any sketchy streets.
Cleanliness: The hotel seems to be very old so the rooms are poorly decorated and the furniture is worn. even though they changed my room due to sever issues with cleanliness, the other room was not much better.
Staff : Staff is friendly and cooperative when it came to me complaining about the room which you can see in the pictures. and responded with all respect

Food : I only had breakfast and it was better than the surrounding restaurants since Rome had an employment issue when i was there. It is safe to have breakfast at the hotel. Good food, and nice ambiance
Price: Their prices are a bit exaggerated for the quality of rooms. I would not stay again at the same facility (another poorly maintained SPG Hotel) in my opinion, it seems like SPG are having management issues.

Room Tip: beware of the moldy rooms

5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 6 July 2014

We recently stayed at the Westin Excelsior for 2 nights before embarking on an Oceania cruise out of Civitavecchia. This was our second trip to Rome and our first stay at the Excelsior.
We arrived early in the morning, dropped off our luggage and went next door to the outdoor hotel cafe to have coffee and tea. While sitting under the canopy it started to rain and quickly turned into a thunderstorm. Our waiter asked if we wanted to move inside but we declined as it was actually very romantic sitting out there in the storm. He moved our chairs and table toward the center of the canopy so we wouldn't get wet. When we finally stood up to make a run for it in the rain back to the hotel lobby, our waiter came up to us with a large umbrella and escorted us into the cafe and through a series of indoor areas, right back to the lobby!
The lobby was stunning with plenty of comfortable seating areas to relax and enjoy the surroundings. The rooms were spotlessly clean and beautiful, with wonderful beds, pillows, and linens and the bathrooms were very well appointed. The dual shower head was such a treat! At first the air conditioning didn't seem to work well and we assumed it was due to this being such a grand old building. After mentioning this at the front desk, we returned later that day to a perfectly cooled room with the addition of a tower fan.
I had sent an email to the hotel before our arrival mentioning that we would be celebrating my husbands 60th birthday. Our first evening when we returned to the hotel, there was a bottle of chilled champagne and an absolutely fabulous cake waiting for us! Every single member of the staff were responsive, friendly, and helpful and the location of this hotel is perfect. We easily walked to the Spanish Steps,Trevi Fountain, and through Villa Borghese. We can't imagine staying anywhere else next time we are in Rome!

When in Rome my wife and I stayed at the Westin Excelsior and it was a great experience. It is a truly great hotel with great service. When we checked in the staff asked us to wait about 45 minutes because our room was not ready. Normally this is a bad start to a stay but they reason they wanted us to wait was so they could upgrade us to a suite on the top floor with a balcony due to my SPG status. Oh and while we waited they covered our drinks in the bar. This level of service continued for the 4 nights we were at the hotel. Also, the hotel is located in great area with fun restaurants and bars walking distance away and the gym is very good too.

This is my 7th stay in the past 9 years. A beautiful property, a fantastic location, wonderful staff.
I will never stay anywhere else in Rome
The lobby and rooms are elegant and the staff is extremely attentive.
It is difficult to find this perfect combination anywhere. If you are going to Rome, you must stay here

We had a 3 night stay in what was a lovely Hotel. The bedroom was luxurious with an exceptional bathroom. The buffet breakfast was excellent with a wide variety of choices. This stay was at the end of our 3 week holiday from Istanbul to Rome which had been amazing and surpassed our expectations. Unfortunately it was spoilt by our suitcase arriving in our room with the bottom side wheels and supports completely broken. It was loaded on to our coach in perfect order. We were not told it was broken and when we asked it was dismissed immediately as not their fault. The issue was poorly handled, leaving us disappointed at lack of communication and customer relations. We had to purchase another suitcase for our long flight back to Australia. For a quality hotel it is a shame that it was spoilt by an issue that could have so easily have been rectified. Our favourite restaurant was Maccheroni at the Piazza delle Coppelle, great food wonderful outside atmosphere.

Dear Tripadvisor
Thank you for your review and for mentioning that we surpassed your expectations
As to the suitcase your tour leader and us have been in contact with you and as mentioned the case was loaded
At the port of Rome to the bus, unloaded by the bus driver and then the hotel delivered it to the room
Unfortunately during these 3 movements we could not determine at what stage the suitcase had been damaged.
I regret the inconveniences and understand how unpleasant it must have been

We spent 5 nights here and loved it. We have stayed in the luxury hotels at the top of the Spanish Steps and a boutique hotel off the Via Veneto and this was a better experience. We had a great room with a terrace overlooking the Via Veneto, but the window is soundproofed and we had no noise issues. The bed was comfortable and the housekeeping was 5 star. The concierge arranged for a driver for a day trip out of rome who was excellent at a very fair price, and helped us with train tickets. The hotel was busy but they are adequately staffed which is not always the case at Italian hotels in the summer.
