The Westin Excelsior, Rome
Ranked #225 of 1,273 Hotels in Rome
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 7 August 2014

You can never really go wrong by picking a Westin property when travelling abroad. After an exhausting trip, jet lag and a new city it really is a joy to end the day in a Westin heavenly bed.

The staff at the hotel was excellent on all fronts and made every effort to ensure we enjoyed our stay.

The hotel is centrally located, a short walk to many of the sights of Rome with shopping and restaurants just steps away from the hotel entrance. Try Doney, for breakfast or dinner, it’s a great choice.

When back in Rome we will be staying at the Westin Excelsior.

We stay at the Excelsior 2 years ago and enjoy it very much. This time was even better , the facilities are very regal and well keep and is walking distance from the sights and far away to be peaceful. The area is full of great restaurants and stores. My home away from home when in Rome

Stayed: July 2014

LOCATION
At the Via Veneto, which is in a way a good address; Jumeirah, Marriott and many other 5*L hotels next door, not the best location to stay in Rome. I guess all these 5-star hotels are located in this aria because this is where it was possible to buy a hotel/property of substantial size. More central locations just don’t have the size.
To my opinion the aria below the Spanish Steps is much better, because of the shops and good, many more and less expensive restaurants and even more close to the biggest attractions in Rome.
Stayed at Homs Hotel earlier (4*+), and would choose that again for sure. Small lobby, but nice/large rooms. We did walk the 15 minutes to get there every day of our stay, to eat at one of the restaurants nearby.

SERVICE
It’s as expected of a 5-star hotel, very welcoming. But had to stay in line for some 12-15 minutes before able to check in, Room wasn’t ready yet (noon..), so went to the hotels outdoor restaurant Doney. Asked even reception if I could get the room number, to sign for the lunch, but no(!) (We came directly from Civitavettchia after a cruise with Celebrity Equinox). Concierge service very good, gave you all info you need, and had a huge numbers of umbrellas to lend to guest when suddenly raining. Note! When doorman asked if we needed an Taxi when leaving for the airport, they did supply a nice Mercedes-Benz E-Class (5 years old?) instead of a standard Taxi, for the same amount as the taxi charges. (€ 48.00)
And you get free water bottles every day! (But the tap water is just as good.., this is a Westin thing i Guess..)

ROOMS
. Room large, great bathroom, all in marble, had both a tub and a large shower room with bench, and a great double shower head.,. .
The extra bed for our son was no problem, lots of space in this room! Beds very comfortable, up to Marriott standard. Got a room on the 1st floor, windows overlooking the tarp, ventilation vents etc. in the backyard.
Not a nice view, but the curtains helped! And very quiet. And in Rome you want to see.. Rome!

FACILITIES
It is a historic, classic hotel, so look at my pictures with this revue. Fantastic decorations and furniture all over. Beyond the reception, there is lots of chairs and sofas, with free wi-fi. The bar is nice, but ridiculous expensive. (€ 18.00 for a Gin&Tonic anyone?)
We vent to the pool. Empty, but service personnel at the reception. Water a little too cold, but the steam bath was nice. (And pool more nice after steam bath and a shower).
But the floor around the pool full of water, used towels laying all over the place. I would expect service personnel checking this all the time, since not very busy?

FOOD
Had lunch at Doney. OK. Had breakfast at Harry’s Bar, just some 200 meters up against the Borghese Park. € 18.00 for an omelet, anyone? Or € 12.00 for a Cappuchino?

TIP:
Eat breakfast (or lunch, dinner) at the Café Strega, 150 meters up towards Borghese, just past Jumeirah. Same outdoor serving, delicious omelets, wonderful tomato soup, and good prices with excellent service!
This is a little boring aria of town, better to book at Spanish Steps aria. But Borghese park has a nice zoo, in walking distance.
Check rates at Westin web-site before booking through Hotels.com etc. They’ll beat those rates easily.

Room Tip: If you want a view, ask for a high floor with street view. If you want quiet, ask for a room against...

This hotel is in a great location and always seems to be buzzing with some sort of high class activity (The US Embassy is 1/2 block away). The staff rarely made eye contact when entering the lobby and there were definitely no smiles. I suppose this is something common in Europe. Being from Kentucky we are used to southern hospitality. The staff did help when ask but given I used 46,000+ Starpoints I expected more. The room was very small with no view of anything. I sensed the nice rooms were given to the higher class folks who spend real money there.

Room Tip: Be specific about a room with a view of something although I doubt they will commit to anything.

I recently spent five nights at the Excelsior with my 14 year old twins. The stay began with Giorgio at the front desk kindly upgrading us to a wonderful, large suite with views over the Via Veneto and two bathrooms. The suite was beautifully appointed with Biedermeier furnishings--in short, it was opulent, comfortable and flawless, and showed none of the signs of age that some other reviewers have noted. The hotel itself is a grand dame, with lovely public rooms. Impressively, for breakfast the hotel gives you a choice of a large (and somewhat pricey) buffet, or a very reasonably priced cappuccino, fresh squeezed juice and pastry (10 Euros).
The service was universally friendly and impeccable--from the extremely helpful concierges (whose suggestions took into account that I was traveling with 14 year olds whose tastes run more towards good pizza than haute cuisine), to the doormen, to the maids, and of course the generous Giorgio at the front desk, everyone made us feel at home.
The location is perfect--on the Via Veneto, with numerous good restaurant options nearby, and close to the Spanish Steps, Trevi Fountain and a host of other attractions.
In sum, we could not have asked for a better stay, and will undoubtedly return.

I stayed in the Excelsior recently and was disappointed to find that it was not as grand as I had initially anticipated. The property itself is beautiful and situated on the buzzy, ambient Via Veneto but this is essentially the only thing that stands out about the hotel. I was given a very shabby low-lit room with views of the ventilation in this sort of central courtyard, a cluster of decrepit, dilapidated pipes and black tarps. In addition to this there was a sort of grime in and around the bath-tub and I had to subsequently scrape a bit of this off. Service was generally decent but prices were ridiculously high, ordering two large bottles of water was at a price of 16 euros. Breakfast was very sub-standard and room service could be given a miss (partly due to the prices).Concierge was very helpful and Rome is a nice city in itself but circumstantially, I wouldn't stay here again. Did I mention in-room wi-fi is horrendously expensive unless you are an SPG-Gold or Platinum member. Traveled with a family in late July.

Room Tip: Ask for a room that faces the main street

This hotel is well known for its elegance, location and service. It is still up to its previously set standards. It is on the Via Veneto and conveninietly located by walking to many of the usual sought after sites in the cityl Taxis are always available. THe American Embassy is just a half block away. THe Borghese gardens ae a few blocks away and safely convenient for a run or just a stroll.

Room Tip: YOu get what you pay for. It is worth it.
