“Well-placed and comfortable hotel”
Reviewed 23 October 2013

We stayed at the Raphael for 5 nights at the beginning of October. The hotel is just off the Piazza Navona, quietly positioned, and very convenient for walking to the major sights. In fact we walked everywhere, and didn't resort to any public transport or taxi. The Colosseum was the furthest, and about 35 minutes walk.

Our suite was a deluxe on the 5th floor, set over two levels. It has a very modern fit-out, and whilst on the small side, was well laid out. The bathroom was well appointed, but very cramped, with a standing only gap between the vanity and toilet/bidet. There was a sitting area with desk, and then a marble flight of stairs up to the sleeping area. This space just accommodated the bed, with barely enough room to move down the sides - watch out for banging your shins on the wooden bed-frame! The stairs are steep, so caution is needed. I did fall, myself, and only just managed to hang on to the hand-rail - serious injury would have occurred otherwise.

The suite is under their terrace, where evening drinks and some limited dining is served. At the end of the evening, and also early morning, the staff dragged the metal chairs and tables around, which consequently sent a considerable amount of noise through the ceiling of our suite, making sleep impossible. The remedy is to head to bed after 11:00pm and rise by 6:15am.

Breakfast is very good, with a broad selection of cold and hot foods, including cake. Great coffee is made promptly for you as soon as you sit down.

The staff were very friendly and helpful, and our room was supplied with a beautiful fruit platter with a bottle of wine on arrival.

I would visit again, but would want a better room on a lower floor to avoid all noise.

Great location - you really can't get better than this - right off Piazza Navona. Suprisingly quiet inside - which was great - close to the Pantheon, we walked to Spanish steps, Vatican - we even walked to the Collaseum - it's easily doable.
Room was beautiful - rooftop restaurant serves great food, great place for sunset drinks. We left early for the airport - there were hampers waiting for us with breakfast.
If you are looking for a beautiful small elegant place - this one is awesome.
Wouldn't hesitate to stay here again

Stayed at the Raphael for 4 nights in a room at the front on the 4th floor.
You can't ask for a better location: seconds from Piazza Navona and 10 minutes to St. Peter's on one side and the Pantheon / Spanish Steps on the other. You can cover a lot of ground and have a multitude of dining/drinking options in a short time frame from Largo Febo.
The service at the hotel was exemplary, from Robert (concierge), the housekeeping team and the breakfast staff; nothing was too much trouble. We had an issue with a leaking shower screen in our room, which they tried to deal with. I'm not convinced that it was completely fixed (housekeeping seemed relaxed about us using towels to mop up the water!) but it didn't spoil our enjoyment. The room was fine. A little on the small side but very comfortable and it had lots of storage and nice toiletries. A lack of English-speaking channels on the tv wasn't brilliant, to be honest, but not a huge issue.
The bathroom, again, was very small but had everything we needed. I didn't care much for the decor (it seemed a little garish and not particularly in keeping with the rest of the room) but everything worked well - other than the issue with the shower screen.
We had breakfast on a few occasions. I would comment on the staff: they were very helpful and very accommodating (we were a little late getting down on time!). I probably wouldn't have paid for the breakfast if it wasn't included in the price but it was a very nice way to start the day.
In terms of cost, we looked at a number of options in and around town. The Raphael was at the top end relative to the Inn at the Spanish Steps/Sofitel and others but I do think the location is worth paying for. I'd be interested in checking some of these others out the next time we're in town. However, the fact that I'd be interested in checking out other 5star hotels says to me that I'm not convinced, given the price and room size/ bathroom decor that it's a 5 star rating from this visit. That said, the overall feel of the Raphael is very relaxed, very comfortable and not at all fussy so it's a really solid 4 star review from me. I really enjoyed the stay and wouldn't have any hesitation in recommending it.

The minute the six of us walked in, we were asked to have a seat and offered a drink. The staff promptly delivered 5 glasses of Prosecco and one perfect cappuccino. They also brought a beautiful platter of sweet and savory treats. While we had a moment to relax and have a toast to Rome, the staff quickly processed our passports. We stayed seated and the staff brought the necessary papers to sign along with maps. We then discussed our plans and the concierge stopped by to check in with us. Next, we arrived in our room and a bottle of Champagne, bottles of water and more treats were in our sitting room. The snacks and waters were delivered twice a day. Our suite and bathroom were bright and large. The breakfast had many offerings. We really utilized the staff/concierge and they never let us down. We had an extremely earl flight and the staff was kind enough to allow us to check out the evening before and had boxed breakfast and coffee for us in the AM.
The rooftop bar is a MUST, the view is breathtaking! The staff is fun and friendly.

This is my number one pick in Rome.

Traveled to Rome for three days with my wife. Arrived late afternoon, and was immediately offered glass of wine upon check in. Explained the layout of the city detailing major attractions on a walking map. Offered to help with guides, tickets etc. Escorted us to our room - an RM Executive suite. Room and bathroom were both very spacious, clean, and new. Daily breakfast was a plentiful buffet with great staff. Concierge was helpful with any request. Each night after dinner, we had a glass of wine at the rooftop bar/lounge. Great views of the city (St. Peter's Basillica, Wedding Cake monument etc.) Each time we were either the only ones there or one other couple. The waiter was very gracious and attentive exlpaining the different buildings we could see. We loved the location as it was a convenient walk to the Vatican. Piazza Navonna, while touristy, was not nearly as hectic/crowded as Spanish Steps or Trevi Fountain areas. Felt very safe walking around at night. During the day, there was a good mix of tourists and local business people in suits milling around the area. Plenty of choices to eat from casual to gourmet all around the hotel.

Room Tip: We had an Executive Junior Suite - Modern Style. Room was large and very new. Tempur Pedic mattres...

We went for a long weekend in October, booked through Expedia with a flight from our local airport. We arrived by taxi from Fiumicino airport (about half an hour at a fixed rate) and were greeted and offered prosecco and canapés while we were checked in.

Check-in staff were very helpful and gave us a map of the city and explained where the main sights were. All the key sights of Rome are within walking distance of the hotel (15-20 mins) which makes the location ideal.
We were shown up to our room (a Richard Meier room ) overlooking the back streets. It had self setting air conditioning plus windows that actually open, a large shower cubicle and large bath, his & hers basins and lovely Bulgari toiletries.

A complimentary bowl of fruit and bottle of wine were delivered to our room later while we were out to lunch. Each day small treats were delivered - canapés, cakes.
Breakfast was a buffet with plenty of choice. The breakfast staff were lovely, remembering our drinks order each morning and speaking French, English, German to the cosmopolitan mix of guests.

We had Sunday lunch at the rooftop terrace (we checked beforehand that it would be open as it is weather dependent). It serves mostly vegetarian food with some fish dishes -ideal for me! The portions were very generous and I could only manage 2 courses despite the food being absolutely delicious.
All the staff were very courteous and welcoming and we felt really at home. We will definitely be back.

Room Tip: The Richard Meier rooms are newly decorated in a modern style

I stayed here recently for 2 nights at a rate of 335 euro/nt and was disappointed. It was my 2nd stay and I had really enjoyed the last visit. Here are the pros and cons:

PROS:
1. Great location just off the Piazza Navona
2. Large selection of breakfast items at buffet
3. Bulgari Au The Blanc toiletries

CONS:
1. The staff on the rooftop terrace were very condescending. We took a bottle of wine up there to enjoy a glass or two around 6 pm and all the tables were empty but one. (These were all wrought iron patio furniture, mind you. Nothing fancy). Nevertheless, when we brought out our wine a staff member soon appeared to ask if we were staying at the hotel. We said yes and showed him our key. He looked a little peturbed that we had our own wine and asked us to move to a table for 2 even though there lots of free tables around. We felt very unwelcome.
2. The hotel was noticeably full of loud Americans talking about their first world problems ("Colin is having such a hard time deciding between Harvard or Yale Law School"....).
3. The hotel's red and gold decor, as well as our sparse dark brown room, seemed stuffy and dated.

Definitely will be staying somewhere else next time I visit Rome as this was not good value for money.

Dear Guest,

we thank you for the time you spent in writing your comments about your stay at Raphael Hotel. Your feedback helps us to constantly improve the level of our service.

We are very happy to acknowledge that you appreciated our locations, in the heart of the Eternal city, our breakfast buffet and our Bulgari amenities.

On the other hand, we are very sorry to learn that your stay did not meet your expectations in this second time, and would like to express our sincere apologies for that.
Be sure, that we will investigate on the inconvenient you had on our rooftop terrace and appropriate actions will be taken, in order to avoid similar problem in the future.
For this reason, we kindly ask you, if you don't mind, to let us know, if you remember who was the waiter or the waitress on duty and approximately the date when it happened.

I am also very sorry to hear about the noise and loud people you were talking about, above all because we know all our guests as well-behaved and quite people.

As we can deduce, you probably stayed in a classic style room, where there are few red and gold details: we would like to inform you that, we do have also rooms in modern Style, designed by the renowned architect Richard Meier, where the main colors are oak wood and beige.
We sincerely hope, you will have the chance to see them in a future occasion.

Dear Sir and Madame, We hope you will consider to come back to our Maison, and in that occasion we will be honored to offer you a free dinner or lunch for two people in our restaurant, and a free upgrade to a Richard Meier Executive Deluxe.
We kindly ask you to let us know, if you don't mind, your e-mail address, in order to take note of our offer and to comment with more details what you have written.
Since we have a very transparent and guest oriented attitude, being deeply sorry if you have felt unwelcome, we are ready to refund in some way this bad emotion you had.

We remain at your complete disposal for any information you may need
Best Regards
