This hotel made our trip to Rome one of the best! We have been to Rome before and never before have had such a great experience! The location is perfect: close to Vatican City, the Pantheon and many more sites. Shopping and dining are within walking distance! The staff was very accomodating, helping us with all questions and information! They even personally drove us out of the city because we were unable to get a cab due to the canonization!

My husband and I spent 5 nights of our honeymoon at Hotel Raphael. Rome was expected to be the "busy-sightseeing" portion of our holiday and so after reading the mixed reviews on TA we decided to book Hotel Raphael on the understanding that we weren't expecting much from the room, but the location would be convenient for us... plus the rooftop seemed like a rather romantic feature. Our taxi from the airport cost the standard rate of 43Euros (...our cab-driver even gave us a pleasant tour of the city-sites as we drove by!)

Good Points:
- The service we received from the staff was very good throughout, particularly at breakfast (which had an adequate range of produce available). We received a wonderful welcome. Prosecco & mini-sandwiches were offered to us and the concierge spent quality time with us to recommend different areas to visit during our stay. He also kindly secured us an entry-ticket for our visit to the Vatican (a must-do if you plan to visit Vatican City, as this allowed us to happily walk straight past the most horrific queue on the day). We were also greeted with a letter and a bottle of Prosecco in our room, congratulating us on our recent marriage.

- The location is just perfect! No matter where we went sightseeing in Rome, we were always able to return to the hotel on foot if we wanted a short siesta or a quick change for the evening. The Piazza Navona is right on your doorstep, and so we enjoyed not only seeing this square completely empty, bathed in early-morning sunlight on our morning walk to the Colosseum, but it also provided some wonderful evening memories as we walked through the square in the evening enjoying the various entertainers.

- Cleanliness

Negatives:
- There were no tea or coffee making facilities in the room! Seriously! What sort of “5 star” hotel doesn’t even provide a kettle for guests??

- 253Euros per night for the Classic Double room is a bit of a joke. We were already anticipating something "cosy", but here we couldn't even walk around the bed! What was particularly disconcerting was that our Booking.com reservation stated "1 Large Double", which is baffling since there is nothing remotely "Large" about the entire room. This also wasn't helped by the equally tiny bathroom, and we were only provided 1 bathrobe and 1 pair of slippers. There wasn't enough space to hang our towels, and so instead they had been squashed in a folded-pile on a stool under the sink. There wasn’t even room to open both our suitcases in the room. Our room overlooked part of the street, which was ok, except it was noisy at times from a (rather untalented) street singer one evening, and a traffic-related altercation one morning.

- The hotel would not provide an iron for guests, which was a complete ploy to upsell their Laundry service. I did use the Laundry service in the end for a pair of trousers and a top (30Euros), and so can confirm the service was quick and reliable, however I was incredibly disappointed that half of my suitcase was unwearable due to their lack of standard facilities which left me feeling bitterly duped.

- The female receptionists weren’t as approachable as the rest of the staff. They rarely looked up, and even avoided eye-contact when we tried to greet them at their empty desk when we returned from our day/evening out, which seemed borderline-rude.

- The rooftop restaurant was nice, but not as romantic as we had imagined, plus there were hardly any city lights on in the evening, which meant the view was pretty much just darkness at night. Service in the restaurant was lacking (no smile, personality or attentiveness). We weren’t particularly opposed to the Vegetarian-only menu, however even when finding a dish that sounded alright, we couldn’t then understand why such a dish would cost the same as a quality meat dish elsewhere. There was only one table on the entire rooftop dining, and they didn’t seem overly pleased with their meal, so in the end we passed on the opportunity. We had one glass of wine each however we didn't bother re-visiting since there were nicer places elsewhere, which is a shame as we would have quite happily enjoyed dining at the hotel if it had been more enjoyable.

All in all, we did enjoy our stay in Rome, however this was largely down to the convenient location of Hotel Raphael and how much we enjoyed ourselves beyond our hotel. If I was ever re-visiting Rome in the future though, I would have reservations about staying here again as I don’t feel we received the best value.

Room Tip: If you must stay here, avoid the classic room.

We have just spent two nights,at hotel Raphael and we are coming back for another 3 nights to this hotel at the end of our holiday in August.
We arrived early morning and the staff had our room ready within 1 hour. We booked a classic room and were upgraded to a deluxe room on the first floor which had a lovely view of the front of the hotel. The hotel is very quiet and in the best location literally one minute to Piazza Navona and 5 mins to the pantheon. We had dinner on the balcony which has the most amazing views of Rome and a delicious organic vegetarian menu.
Breakfast was also sensational. My husband and I cannot fault the hotel and we will definitely stay here whenever we come back to Rome.

We spent 2 nights recently at the Hotel Raphael in Rome. While we loved the location, the lovely young lady at the desk whose name began with an M, and the juice machine, there were things about the hotel that really bothered me. The lobby looked worn and not very inviting. We were offered wine and finger sandwiches on our arrival around 4PM. When we returned from dinner at 10:30 the remains of that snack were still left sitting on the table in the lobby as we left them. There were two young men manning the desk who were chatting and laughing in clear view of this mess and no one thought to clean it up? The thing that made my head spin was this. We had NO SHOWER in Room 420. They touted the room as a Richard Meier Executive Room (not sure who he is and am not impressed by his name) because it had no shower at all - just a big tub. As I am not one to ever get into a hotel tub, this was a huge problem. By the time a replacement room became available we chose to not take time from touring Rome to pack up and make the change. In retrospect we should have made the effort for it really soured my mood. Fortunately we were traveling with another couple who graciously offered to let us use their shower while they went out for a glass of wine. So here we paid over $500 per night and had to schlep down the hall with our towels and toiletries to get showered. Not my idea of a 5 star R & C experience.

Room Tip: I suggest you find a room WITH A SHOWER in a different hotel.

Dear Guest,

We thank you for having shared your experience at Hotel Raphael, Relais & Chateaux, on Tripadvisor.

We have read with pleasure that you appreciated the location, our dear colleague Ms.Nabila, and the juice machine on our breakfast buffet.

We are sorry to read that you did not like the lobby. It is decorated with several important paintings, such as The Madonna con Bambino and lithographies by Picasso, Mirò, De Chirico, sculptures and original Picasso ceramics. We take great care on the decoration of the lobby as it is the first impact you have of the hotel.

Regarding the snack you saw in the lobby, it was most probably the welcome drink offered to another guest that had just arrived late in the evening. But in any case, further to your communication, we will increase our controls on the welcome service.

We are sorry to read that you did not enjoy fully the Executive Richard Meier Room with Terrace (room n° 420) because it has a bathtub and no shower. It is indeed the only Executive Richard Meier Room that does not have a shower. This detail is written in the room description on our website. The room was not booked directly with our internal booking office and we are sorry it may not have been made clear at the moment of your booking. Since you had booked the Richard Meier Double Room with Terrace, that is only one in the hotel, you were assigned that precise room. We have enquired with our Front Office staff about the room change and they indeed confirmed that when you mentioned later the fact that the lack of a shower was a problem for you they offered immediately a different room with a double shower but you preferred not to change as you mentioned. Changing room would have probably made you feel more comfortable during your stay. When a guest does not feel satisfied with the room assigned, we always do our best to meet his expectations and we would have been happy to help you in any way to make the room change.

We are also sorry that the absence of the shower did not allow you to appreciate completely the room of 31 square meters and the really nice and romantic terrace of 10 square meters. The bedroom is equipped with Tempur mattresses, electrical adjustable bed, electric curtains and Bulgari amenities. The bathroom made of marble Giallo Sienna and Nero Portoro has 2 large sinks and a bathtub. We personally find it really comfortable and esthetically beautiful. But we understand that the absence of a shower might be a drawback for some guests. This is the reason why we have the project to add a shower to the bathroom in the next future.

Dear Guest, we thank you again for your precious feedback on your experience at Hotel Raphael, Relais & Chateaux, that will certainly allow us to improve the quality of our services.

We hope to have the opportunity to welcome you in our hotel in the next future. We would be glad in that occasion to offer you a free upgrade to an Executive Richard Meier room of a superior category with a terrace and obviously with a shower.

Dear Guest, please kindly send us a mail with your details to the following address: economato@raphaelhotel.it and we will send you a voucher for the upgrade for a possible future stay at Hotel Raphael, Relais & Chateaux.

This has got to be the best hotel in Rome. It is located in the heart of Rome right next to Piazza Navonna, and only 5 minutes to the Pantheon. The rooms are spotless, the service is great the staff are friendly, there is more anyone can ask for.

We just returned from a 4 night stay at the Hotel Raphael. There were some disappointments mostly connected to the room. Having read the reviews I booked a deluxe double. Upon arrival I confirmed the room and then was told it would not be ready until 2:30 so we left our luggage and toured the area. Upon returning we were given our room on the first floor which was small and shabby and not at all up to the level of what was advertised as a deluxe room and the price charged. I am not sure why it was assigned to us at all as it was what others have described as the classic room. After complaining about the room we were then given the deluxe with balcony on the 5th floor which was clearly nicer since it had been renovated but also had draw backs such as the bedroom up a flight of stairs and a tiny balcony. We took that room as it was clearly the better option. It seems typical at this property that you have to complain until you get an acceptable room despite paying and reserving ahead of time for a deluxe room.

The hotel is ideally placed to visit Rome. It’s in one of the old backstreets, with most of the tourist sites within walking distance. It was clean and tidy and the breakfast was good. The hotels failing is its bedrooms. We booked an up-market “Richard Meier Executive Room”, at a discounted rate of 476 euros per night. It was clean, with a nice bathroom. But the bedroom was basic and certainly a lot smaller than I would expect for the price. I have stayed in similar rooms, in budget hotels for a fifth of the price. One thing that was very good was the rooftop bar, which was relaxing with good service and friendly staff.
