“Convenient and Friendly”
Reviewed 8 July 2009

We chose Napoleon based on reviews here and were not disappointed. The front desk is friendly (and speaks enough English). They picked us up for free by van (a/c non-functional) from FCO airport because of a 3-day reservation (see their website--the driver spoke no English, and did not believe in loading or unloading luggage). The room and deskspace a little limited by US standards, but the wardrobe (with the programmable lockbox within) and several items of furniture had keys, and could be locked. Bathroom was clean and the supplies fine (Europeans do not believe in washcloths, and the hand towels are usually thin. They also do not believe in oversupplying towels. There was one of each for each of us). The days we were there were not exceptionally hot, so the meager output of the A/c was adequate. The greatest advantage of the hotel is proximity to the Metro. The breakfast was definitely much more than basic although not top tier. The coffee is brought to the table (enough for 2 cups), and tasted like instant which it does in most places. Mini-bar rates were reasonable compared to airport prices and some other hotels we stayed at. They have Metro tickets at the desk if you need them. We never felt any safety concerns. For something I needed printed, I sent the .pdf by email to the front desk and they had it printed and ready for me (so interpret the 'business center' accordingly). I also had wireless internet 24 hours without additional charge, a big plus.

The hotlel is not bad – good deal (Eur 180/night), but the room is small and the location is not very central (and not a particularly nice area). It’s right next to a subway station, which is good, but the subway doesn’t go to most of the key sites in the center of the old city. The rooms are on the small side of the European scale. The service was pretty good, particularly from the young guy (Stephan) at the concierage desk. He helped us book bus tickets to Sorrento online and was generally very helpful. We were on our honeymoon, so they gave us a bottle of sparkling wine on our fist day – very thoughtful. Breakfast was incluced, but was pretty bad. Eat elsewere (remember that the point of the trip is to enjoy the sights and the food, not to eat bad food for free). Overall, the hotel was a good 4 star – all my complaints are basically what you trade in for a lower price. PS: to get to Trastevere on the first day, we tried the bus – it took 15 minites to walk to the train station (where the bus was) and another 20 minutes waiting to get on the bus – not recommended. It’s much better to spend the money and take a taxi (would be about Eur 20). We ended up taking the subway where possible. Where not possible, we took the taxi (it took Eur 15 just to get to Piazza Navona, which was not that far).

We had a great time at Hotel Napoleon. It was perfect for our family of four (with children aged 7 & 9). We took advantage of the great location, handy to many sites such as the Colusseum, Roman Forum etc, loved the breakfasts, and made great use of the available WiFi. All the staff were very friendly and very helpful and able to answer all of our questions. It was the first hotel we were to stay at in a five week trip to Italy and found it so good that we ended up booking a further stay at the end of our trip.

Pro - Clean hotel with a restaurant. Metro station is literally right downstairs with easy access.

Con - Hotel is right by a park and it's very quiet/dead at night. No restaurants/bars are opened late at night in the area. No internet service (although there is a wi-fi computer, stress only ONE in the common area).

The only good thing about this hotel is that it's VERY close to a metro station, which doesn't help since the metro shuts down at 11:30pm every day (12:30am on Saturdays).

Recommend another hotel at another location.

I was given 3 days in Rome as a 65th birthday present from my daughter and son in law.
WOW! what a present it was. My wife and I enjoyed our stay at the Hotel Napoleon, what a hotel it is, the staff were absolutley brilliant .From the time that we were picked up in a limousine to the time that we left we were treated with the utmost curtesy, special thanks to Mr Roberto Lombardi and the waiters and waitresses and all other staff to numerous to mention, who made this trip a memorable one, we cant wait to go back for a second visit hopefully next year 2010.

Stayed here after arriving in Rome without a reservation. Front door somewhat lost among the storefronts, I passes it by my first time by. However from accross the street
in the square it becomes appararent that this is a large majestic hotel despite the
diminuative front entrance and lobby. A walk to the second floor reveals a very pleasant old world lobby/lounge complete with vintage artwork. I found guests in the lounge chatting about their experiences in Rome on a regular basis, it is a relaxing atmoshpere that encourages the guests to chat. The clientele seems to be
mostly British & American tourists. Roberto Lombardi was the concierge on duty when
I arrived unnanounced he was able to provide a room at a fair price and the service was great. He was able to magically create a parking space and find a carpark, a good dinner recommendation and suggested a great late night walk to the Colloseum. He and all of the staff here really went out of their way to be helpful. The shower
was tiny, but the room was comfortable, the price was right. Internet was slow but FREE and breakfast was decent and included. This hotel is good, and the price and service are great. I give the Hotel Napoleon five stars even though it is not five star by American standards, the combination of good service and value in central Rome earn it my five star recommendation. You could only do better at 3 to 5 times the price.

Room --> By European and/or Roman standards, the "superior double" room that we (me, my wife and our 7-year-old boy) booked, is one of the most generous in terms of free space, never felt "tight" while we were all together in the room, it was always a pleasure returning back to our base after a long day of walking and sightseeing. Big spacious bathroom with bathtub, not the usual claustrophobic shower cabins that an adult can barely stand in. In addition, our room was VERY quite, something that counts a lot when all you want is a good night's sleep in order to wake up in the morning fresh and ready for a new day in Rome (that was because the hotel rooms face the backyard, which is nothing more than some other building's back, but again, when travelling I gladly exchange the lack of view with a priceless serene night.

Staff --> EVERYBODY was very polite and ready to help whatever the problem/need was, very friendly, kind of a "family" atmosphere and at the same time very professional staff. The room was booked several months before and every little detail was taken care of exactly as promised in the initial emails that we exchanged with the hotel management (for example, the car that, when leaving, would carry as from the hotel to the Fumicino airport was fixed in February, when we booked the room, at a certain price for the morning of the 22nd of June and it was right there waiting for us!)

Location --> What can I say? The Metro station is at the doorstep of the hotel, we could not ask for anything more since we had only 3 days available to see as much of Rome as we could. Some previous reviewers mentioned that they spotted a few "suspicious" guys on the nearby area but, hey, we are talking about the metro of a big metropolis, it's no different than any other similar place. At no moment we felt uncomfortable or unsafe.
Another big plus was the fact that round the corner there were two trattorias (neighborhood restaurants) with very good food and extremely reasonable prices, a big advantage especially on Sundays when most of the downtown restaurants are closed.

Other --> Restaurant, bar (with small/light dinner) and a cozy leaving room with TV and an Internet spot were all operating/in order, just keep in mind that we are not talking about anything fancy or gourmet considering the food, it is just an effortless solution when you are too tired to get out and start looking for a restaurant.

All-in-all --> MUCH better than expected, great value for money, if I return to Rome I would definitely stay at the Napoleon again.
