“An Excellent Hotel!”
Reviewed 4 July 2014

My wife and I are just back from a five night stay at the Visconti Palace Hotel, situated close to the Vatican. It was our second time of staying and undoubtedly there will be a third and more. Our room was clean, comfortable and well-appointed. The breakfast was second to none and catered for just about every taste. We found the staff friendly, courteous and extremely helpful. For instance, after inquiring about tickets for the Museo Borghese a member of the hotel staff immediately made a reservation for us. The hotel is in easy walking distance to many of Rome's attractions as well as to Lepanto station on the metro. My wife and I really can't fault this hotel and, as I say, our recent stay was the second of what I am sure will be many visits. Simply excellent!

Room Tip: Upgrade to the premier rooms on the 5th and 6th floors.

We stayed here for a few nights prior to leaving on a cruise. The room hotel is well-located, within an easy walk to the Vatican. There is choice of many good restaurants and shopping all close by. We enjoyed a very good albeit somewhat expensive dinner in the rooftop terrace restaurant. Breakfasts were excellent! However, two major aspects detracted from the enjoyment of our stay - our room was quite small and more important, it was extremely noisy in our room. The sounds from the hallway and from adjacent rooms were much louder than they should be.

Fantastic stay at this hotel, location is ideal for the Vatican Museum and the Castel Sant'Angelo.
Also not far from this hotel is the main square where you can jump on the no 87 bus and go straight to the Colosseum or Coliseum, also known as the Flavian Amphitheatre and the Trevi Fountain. The ticket is an all day ticket for 6 euros and you just use the ticket machine in the main square which is easy to use and can alter settings to English.
The hotel had really friendly staff and a great selection at breakfast in a really comfortable and bright setting, you can also sit and have drinks on the roof top listening to background music whilst you chat and also an outside reception area where you can sit and enjoy drinks. The rooms were really comfortable.
All in all a great hotel to base yourself when visiting Rome.

This hotel was like going back in time to the 80s

Not only is the decor dated and cheap (nothing like the PR photos), the whole experience reminded me of the complacency hotels used to have, right down to getting cleaners to hoover the corridor while customers are trying to sleep

The format is like any low-end American chain. The beds, linen, carpet and furnishings are cheap and uncomfortable, the TV at least 10 years old, remote batteries don't work, bathroom tatty, toiletries cheap, shower goes hot and cold, etc.

Breakfast was well stocked in the generic buffet style, but quality poor (trough of rubbery scrambled eggs, stewed coffee, etc. you know the drill)

2 things in the room make it worse than the average low-end American chain. Poor wifi. (and they want to charge you for 1mb speed), and then: no ironing board - either in the room or available from house-keeping - something I haven't encountered in 25 years of business travelling. Even Ibis or something as woeful would have an ironing room. Not here though. Here they will press your shirts for you for 5 Eur each (...but not after 5pm, when it would be useful). This says all you need to know about the attitude towards customers.

I guess it's suitable for coach trip tourists, but I won't be back

My wife and I have just returned from a short stay at this hotel. Our room was on the fifth floor and was excellent. Clean, comfortable bed, good bathroom. We could not fault it; we were both very pleased with it.
We had breakfast included on our trip and again were pleased with the selection; lots of variety and a good quality. Particular mention to Stefano in the dining room who welcomed us each morning at breakfast and was always polite enough to encourage me with my poor Italian so thank you to him. We found all the staff very professional, polite and helpful.

As far as location, it is just off the Piazza Cavour a nice quite piazza in comparison to lots of others, which was perfect. Saying that there are lots of places to eat. Restaurants, trattorias, estorias, cafes and Gelaterias. An easy walk to the Vatican, Piazza Popola, Spanish Steps etc.
I would stay here again should I visit Rome.
Transfer tip
You can get the Siti bus from Fumincial airport directly to the Piazza Cavour (stance 3) which is a good cost saving way to go. Just be aware it can seem like a bit of a free for all as there seems to be no real system of boarding; and lets just say that some people do not grasp the system of queuing and waiting their turn.

This hotel is in an unprepossessing rather scruffy area but that said was very well placed to walk to just about everywhere in Rome. 30 minutes to the Coliseum and 10 to the Vatican. The hotel itself was pretty ordinary as was our room but as we were here for two nights prior to our cruise we accepted it as part of the package. Not somewhere I would choose to go back to if I were booking independently. Staff rather cool and breakfast certainly not anything to write home about. Prior to arriving in Rome we had spent 1 night at a Premier Inn at Heathrow Airport which was far better and a hell of a lot cheaper!

First off, I had booked this hotel for our son's honeymoon pre-cruise stay for several days in 2012, because the cruise line used it as their offered accommodation in Rome. When they returned, they just couldn't say enough about this place. So when my wife and I decided to spend three weeks about the NCL Jade doing Italy, the Adriatic ports and Greek Islands, I booked the Visconti Palace again.

My wife and I typically book suites, and at the Visconti, there are two large balcony suites on the seventh floor. When we arrived, we were welcomed as old friends, and taken immediately to our suite. When we arrived, we were greeted with a lovely fruit bowl, and a chilled white wine and handwritten welcome letter from the hotel manager. There were two large chairs, a full size couch, flat screen, internet connection, mini bar etc. The room was modern, with a sliding door out to the balcony which ran the full length of the suite. There were two additional access doors to the balcony off the bathroom door and in the bedroom. The balcony looking on to various other balconies in the neighborhood as well as church domes and the roof lounge which offered drinks, and a limited menu.

The bath room offered a full size tub, a separate shower with overhead as well as a handheld head, there was a toilet and the obligatory bidet. The room itself was huge and the sink and counter was large enough for a family.

The bed was, in my opinion a Queen with comfortable bedding and pillows we had no difficulty sleeping in this bed. There was a huge amount of storage, one full wall consisted of a full wall of built in hanging closets and a dressing area with hair dryer. A flat screen was also available.

The morning breakfast was fabulous, however while we were there, the kitchen was undergoing renovation so lunch and dinner was very limited.

The hotel is about a 10 minute walk to the Castel San Angelo, and 20 minutes to the Vatican Museum. The Roman Forum would be around a 30 minute easy walk. There was a grocery store within four blocks of the hotel and even an American steakhouse right in the neighborhood.

I paid roughly 1000 Euros for three nights, 4/30- 5/3 2014, and for me, it was well worth the money.

Room Tip: the 7th floor suites are special
