The family all loved the pizza and pasta dishes they ate and I had a delicious turkey steak covered in melted parmesan cheese and a salad as I have to eat gluten free food. We went back on our last evening as it was so nice and friendly.

5 minutes from Villa. Friendly place with some interesting apps. Always great Parma ham and buffalo mozzarella, fried cod and for something different fried lamb brains with fried artichokes..... When in Rome! Cod was the best, all were good. Great pizza and pasta - amaritciana (sp?) and one with fungi. $110 euros for 5 with a bottle of wine. You can't go wrong.

It is par excellence our local trattoria, and we eat there quite often. The family who runs La Balestra (The Crossbow) comes from Gubbio in Umbria, as witnessed by all the reminiscent photographs on the walls. It has a friendly warm, family atmosphere, and the customers are like us, from the same area in Rome, mostly tending not to be very young. The cooking is very good, using seasonal fresh produce, like funghi porcini at the moment (ceps). Another plus are the puntarelle - a salad made with a kind of young chicory and an anchovy dressing, in season from about November to February. Tomatoes stuffed with rice are a good summer choice, like the rest of the mainly vegetarian buffet. The via Metauro daily street market is just round the corner. Meat, fish and pasta dishes, like pasta with greens (broccoli or broccoletti)are all well cooked and presented. Meat lovers in search of excellence should find out what has been actually roasted in the oven with potatoes that day, as you will find both lamb and sucking pig etc. on the menu. My only criticism is that like many other restaurants in Rome, the cook is too free with salt, for me sometimes disastrously so. Usually full, but quiet enough for conversation and despite good pizza it's definitely not a place where crowds of kids spend their evenings, or even noisy tables of office colleagues at lunch time. Closed on Wednesday.

Our hotel recommended we visit this restaurant for dinner. This was our first meal in Italy, and we ordered Pizza of course. It was wonderful. The service was also good. We did not realize how reasonable the price was at the time but it really was for Rome. We liked it so much that we went back again the second night. The service was even better because the staff recognized us as returning guest. They also gave us a small discount and did not charge the 4 Euro for the bread as they did the night before. I think tourist get charged for everything when the locals do not. Otherwise the locals could not afford to eat out. AND there were locals there. Great atmosphere too.

We stayed in the vicinity of La Balestra for a week and sampled all of the restaurants in the immediate vicinity - this was our favourite. The prices were reasonable and the food authentic and tasty. But this restaurant excelled in making you feel welcome. We went back!
