“Colosseum at your doorstep”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 27 May 2014 via mobile

Great hotel with a funky retro feel, very near to the Colosseum.

Our room was spacious and well set-up. Although room cleaning facilities tended to our room later in the day we were busy out exploring what Rome had to offer so this didn't phase us.

Angela at reception was very informative about Rome and what we should see for the timeframe we had avaliable.

The neighbourhood was quiet but with a great variety of places to dine at, drink coffee or have a vino - the map of the area given to us by Retrome was very useful.

-Very difficult to locate. It is not really a hotel but is inside a building which is actually an apartment for others to stay and live there.
-Not far from metro but not close also.About 10-15 minutes walking.
-Room was the tiniest and bathroom was even tinier. My husband and I always and every single time, hit either our head, or our knee or our elbow or something in the bathroom while trying to take a shower or use it for any reason.
-There is no wardrobe in the room and not even a dustbin. The double bed is so small that your feet will hang outside and you will be literally squeezed to sleep together.
-You will have no space to move once you open your bag. Ofcourse no luggage rack or anything and so everything is on the floor.
-Staff is nice and friendly but if you need anything, you are practically on your own. They will give you a local number to call (owner’s number) which is silly coz there is no phone in the room and if you are on roaming, you have to spend on an international call or even better, if your sim is not working, you cannot make any call. Pretty incovenient.
-They did book a car for us to the airport on our departure, as it was very early in the morning and that worked fine. Thanks to them for that.
-For breakfast, you are supposed to walk to some restaurant and is not offered in the hotel.Again, pretty inconvenient we thought and just let it be.
-They give a city map upon arrival and helped us out with suggestions as to how to explore the city.
-Wi fi was good.
-They did provide us with an adapter but suggest bringing your own to avoid disappointment.

We stayed for four nights in the two bedroom apartment adjacent to the hotel. The welcome was very warm, we were all offered espressos and a seat when we arrived which was lovely. The lady behind the desk was extremely helpful & friendly, she gave us maps and tips of things to see/do. The apartment was spacious, clean and very modern with a beautiful old lift. It felt very safe and was a five minute walk from the Colosseum & the metro. We didn't want to leave and would definitely stay here again if we come back in the future! Very impressed, will recommend to friends!

We arrived here at midnight and we were charged 25 euros for check in after 10 PM which was fair enough. The hotel doesnt have 24 hours reception. You need to text the manager if you need any help. Its a big apartment converted into hotel.
Dont pay for taxi service provided by hotel as they offered the service for 56 euros and I am glad we did not take it as we could reach hotel just in 15 euros from airport. You can buy the bus tickets to get inside Rome from inside the airport for 4-5 euros per person which leaves you at Roma Termini station. Busproviders - Terravision From there you can take bus or underground train to go near the place you want to go.
The hotel staff was friendly and gave us two maps and explained both of them which helped a lot. One which has a road map of Rome and other mentioning important places near hotel like restaurants, pharmacy ...etc. This road map is all you need to go around in Rome. Although I think every hotel provider gives you this road map as I saw it in hands of every other tourist I came across in the city.
Breakfast was not included in the booking though the hotel is called Bed and Breakfast which is pretty darn I think. When enquired about it, they said its 7 euros per person. But you can fill 2 stomachs at that price in Rome as food is very cheap in this city. The location of the hotel is really good. Just 5-10 mins walk to Colosseum which is the best thing about hotel.

We just spent the last weekend in Rome. The location is not bad but I could not stay there for more than 2 nights. The room was very very very very small and the "bathroom" was a toilet with a shower.... TOO SMALL ! My husband is quite tall and could barely sit on the toilets. I don't think its worth 90€ ... the decor was quite nice but a few things need attention and the walls need a lick of paint ... The hall and staircase are awful, the view was awful ... But the worst thing was the breakfast on sunday, bar closed so for !7€ ! we got discount yoghurt, a bad croissant... from the Carrefour market instead of just buying fresh croissants from the café situated even closer than the shop (where we came across the lady of the hotel the next day) ! strange !
It's a pity, I think it could be a great place if there was a bit more attention to detail, i am an architect an I found the place very attractive on the photos but I didn't expect to have such a small room :-(
If you book there be sure to not sleep in the tiny room and have breakfast in the cafe 50 meters further !

Dear Pitchmel,

Thank you for your review. We really appreciate the time you took in order to write thisreview about Retrome and to share your experience with other travellers.

We are happy to hear that you liked the special design of the hotel. Most of the rooms in our hotel are of a very good size (for city hotels), but you chose specifically the Small Double room, and it is indeed smaller in size (and in price). Nevertheless, also the Small Double rooms has a private en-suite bathroom, air-condition, LCD TV, free WiFi Internet etc.

We hope to be able to welcome you again in Rome, or in Barcelona, at our new boutique hotel in the center of the city

Regards,

Oren
