We just returned from a 3 day stay at the Gran Melia Rome. We selected this property specifically because of the large pool/garden area for our child. What a great find in the heart of Rome right?The hotel just recently opened so we expected everything to be nice and well-maintained - what a disappointment! During our stay the pool area was overrun by pigeons - 15 to 20 at a time.
The bottom of the pool, pool deck area and deck chairs were all covered in bird droppings. The conditions were not addressed in any way during our stay, therefore we did not allow our child to use the facility. The management did apologize for the conditions but took no action to address them and charged us full price for our stay despite the completely disgusting conditions. We also had air conditioning issues in our first room - which was eventually changed after three visits from maintenance. One night the Maid enter our room at 10:30 pm at night, flipped the lights on waking us for no explicable reason and then quickly left when she realized she woke us. Room service was terrible - our food arrived incorrectly or uncooked three out of four times. This facility is reasonably nice, but it is NOT a five star property by any definition. They have a ton a bugs to work out and should not be doing it on the customers dime. The staff was really sweet and very apologetic about all of our issues -- but when vacationing I'm looking for excellence, not apologies.

We stayed with here from Wednesday 25th April until Sunday 29th April and thought it only appropriate that we acknowledge the polite, friendly, attentive staff throughout the resort and the restaurants with their wonderful wines and cuisine.

The refurbishment to the resort has been completed to a extremely high standard, with it's beautiful décor and we look forward to our return trip next year.

We loved this hotel for it's simplicity, charm, and location a bit away from the Eternally noisy city of Rome. Truly a 5-star hotel. We loved the employees, especially Andrea! We would go on one of our tours, then race back to the calm of the hotel, especially the pool area. Hotel food and drink way to expensive as it is evident by the lack of patrons in the eating area and bar. Lovely, lovely hotel, wish I planned to go to Rome again...but once is enough for this lover of calm and curteous people. But again, the hotel employees were perfectly charming! Taxi drivers showed very little class. Do not let one of them grab you out of the line at the train station or airport, these are the non-legitimate ones. Make sure they have a meter. The ride from the train station to this hotel should be only about 20 Euros.

Room Tip: Ask for a room on the hill side, you can hear the eternally running ambulance sirens from the other...

We just returned from a weekend in Rome where the staff at Gran Melia wrapped us in cotton wool from start to finish. I'm pretty obsessive when it comes to customer service, especially when spending this much money. My expectations were exceeded here. The welcome to the hotel at 11pm was genuinely friendly, we were upgraded to a red level room and granted a very generous late check out time on our day of departure. The pool area really is an oasis in the centre of Rome. The only problem with staying here is that'll you may miss the sites of Rome because you won't want to leave the hotel!

Room Tip: Joining the mas rewards program will get you breakfast at half price and a chance at a room upgrade...

We Just returned from 10 days in Italy and spent 3 days at the Gran Melia Roma at Villa Agrippa. First of all, the staff is amazing and helpful - especially Andrea. The hotel is brand new, impeccably clean and beautifully appointed. The Gran Melia Rome was the perfect retreat away from the crowds and many sights of Rome - yet easily accessible. We were traveling with two school aged children. While the kids enjoyed taking in the abundance of roman sights, there is a point for them and us when enough is enough. We would retreat back to the Gran Melia rome, our urban resort, and relax. Rome was so hot, so having an outdoor pool was the ultimate luxury. The pool is stunning and inviting, surrounded mostly by couples but very welcoming to children.

The junior suite is also perfect for families. The room has a sliding panel that divides the rooms and the children slept very comfortably on a daybed and a roll away. Since the rooms are spacious, this does not feel cramped. The bathrooms are roomy, spotless and new with attention to every detail. There is a shower room with a tub in it so you can literally hose down the kids. The rooms are elegant and luxurious with a modern twist. Without a doubt the most comfortable bed and pillows we experienced in Italy.

We were given excellent recommendations from the concierge for places to eat so we only ate breakfast at the hotel. The breakfast was a typical lavish assortment italian breakfast foods buffet style, but sitting outside on the shaded breakfast terrace in the middle of rome was amazing. The villa sits on a grand hill near the Vatican so you can see the ancient walls everywhere but you are in an classic modern oasis. You can hear the whisperings of the hustle and bustle of the city beyond the villa walls but the terrace and pool area was serene. The service could be better but you really can't be upset with the servers because they are hustling and moving as fast as they can. The pool service was sparse on the days we went. But the hotel is new, so I am sure this will be corrected. Everyone appeared to have water and drinks but there was no one visible to provide it. There was a lifeguard!

We found the location perfectly central. The hotel is a 5 to 10 minute walk to the vatican. They have a shuttle to the busy shopping area around the spanish steps but a taxi to this area is just 6 euros. Because the street directions are loopy, we just walked most days (15 -20 minute walk) We always walked home from dinner and would incorporate spanish step, trevi fountain, campo fiore or piazza navone into our walks. The kids enjoyed the walks because there is so much to see. We also walked 5 to 10 minutes up the hill behind the hotel (via gianicolo) where there is an amazing scenic overlook with a birds eye view of the city. This is a great energy burn for the kids and an amazing view. Trastavere is also very close and a great place to dine and explore at night.

I have previously stayed near the spanish steps, but next time I go to Rome I will without a doubt return to the Gran Melia Roma for the best of both worlds. Urban Resorts is my new preferred lodging category!!!!

Room Tip: We had poor wi-fi on the low floor but excellent wifi on the higher floors. There was no noise issu...

The hotel opened in April 2010, so there are a couple of little things that need to be rectified, very minor, very slow service for after dinner drinks and drinks by the pool, but for the rest the personnel were extremely professional and enthusiastic, it was a pleasure to stay there. The rooms are beautifully decorated and comfortable, we were upgraded and I suggest you join their loyalty program for interestin benefits. I would choose the premium room with a view as it has a wonderful bath tub. We ate at the restaurant which was very good, although we thought the soufflé was a little over priced. It is easy walking distance from the Vatican & the town centre. The swimming pool is lovely and sunning area super.

We spent 4 nights at the Gran Melia Rome in a junior suite. From the moment we arrived until our departure, the staff could not have been more helpful. It was a pleasant surprise to discover that the junior suite meant we were Red Glove guests which meant personal service from the girls in red and a private check in with a glass of bubbly. The room was great, with two toilets and showers, plus each day we came back to a surprise of biscuits, sweets or fruit. The coffee pod machine was an unexpected delight, as was the complimentary mineral water in amazing black metal bottles. My memories of a previous visit to Rome was the noise, but this hotel was very quiet and traffic noise was at a minimum. The only real noise came from the emergency service sirens passing by. We had a problem with the sliding wall on our first night and we mentioned it to the maid in the morning and by lunch time it was fixed. We ate in the restauarant one night and the food was excellent. The waiter was not fazed by my request for a vegetarian option and the meal I was served was a delight.Breakfast was also good with choices from cakes, fresh fruit, cheese, meat, salmon, a variety of artisan breads etc. Prosecco, fruits juices and mineral water all laid out for you to help yourself. The hotel was relaxed and the maid service was efficient but invisible - no trolleys of towels and toiletries cluttering the corridors in the morning. We never felt rushed or hurried out of the room for cleaning etc. Rose petals sprinkled by the slippers at the bedside each evening - the whole experience was faultless which is a result as we are both difficult to please and have often been disappointed at other so-called 5 star establishments. The staff were all so kind and welcoming, especially the chaps at the main entrance who rushed out with umberellas when we returned from a walk in the pouring rain. The Gran Melia in Rome is to be recommended
