The hotel is new and is nice. It is probably equivalent to a really nice 4 star in the states. The rooms were pretty basic with really tight quarters and for the price, seemed a bit over-priced. We paid much more at the Four Seasons in Provence but the surroundings and charm of the hotel along with the service made it worth it. I would probably look for another alternative in Rome.

The hotel is very close to the Vatican (Walking distance) but is bit away from other sites in Rome.

My husband and I spent a few days of our honeymoon at the Gran Melia in Rome Italy. The property has been recently renovated and it is truly 5 star. The room was really pretty and the showers in the Jr. Suite is an experience of it's own. The staff is very attentive to your needs and welcoming. The hotel is also well located. It's within walking distance of the Vatican and the Trastevere (partying) area, as well as the shopping area Via del Corso. We truly enjoyed our stay.

Room Tip: Jr. Suites have a magnificent shower. But the view on the 3rd floor is not great.

If you come in summer with kids this is the place to stay in Rome.
The place is magnificant, and the pool is great.
Rooms are nice and tastefuly decorated.
Location is very good, as you are secluded and 10 minutes away from the center. However, first 3 minutes of the walk are on a noisy and polluted street. Also, when coming back in a taxi be aware that there is another Melia hotel, much older one, far away, and that most taxi drivers would think that you are going there. So, give them the address as well.
Food is excelent with attention to detail even for breakfast (vulcanic water, spanish ham, yoghurt from South Tyrol etc.) . Wine list is limited but selection is very good, and prices are reasonable.
Staff is trying to be very helpful and smiling all the time.
The "lady in red" concept is a hit and miss. One of them was great, the other one sent me back to the recpetion as "she is not dealing with that"?!
Finally, the only thing that really does not work is the service aroudn the pool. Minimum wait for drinks is 20 minutes, and once I had to ask twice and got it after 30 minutes. Then, when you are done, nobody comes to clean it up and you get tons of ants coming to the place. It is a detail, but this is a luxury place, so...
To sum it up, we would definitely come again :-)

I stayed at the Hotel Gran Melia for a long weekend in June with my girlfriend and decided on the hotel for its looks and location. We arrived at the hotel around 12, too early for check in but we needed to drop bags off. The hotel staff checked our room and it was not available so we dropped the bags off and had a quick walk around Saint Peter's Square for a couple of hours.

On returning at check in our room still wasn't ready so we was given a couple of complimentary drinks while we waited. Eventually one of the ladies in red come and grabbed us and showed us to our room. We was shown around our room and given an explanation of all the buttons and what was what. After a few minutes the phone rang and i was asked to come back down to reception to provide proof of payment for the room (which i found a little bit insulting). After a while the phone rang again, reminding me incase i forgot the previous call. I had only just put my bags down!

Problems aside the room was amazing and modern with great facilities, such as the Nespresso machine and a rainforest shower with massaging jets. The bedding was comfy and we got some great nights sleep. The view was a bit questionable, looking into an old ladies' balcony but if you craned your neck around there was a great view of Castel Sant'Angelo.

We tried the Pool out on the second day as the weather was just too hot. The pool area is great with plenty of sun beds and handy waiting staff. We only ordered a few drinks due to them being extremely overpriced (€8 for a coke and around €17 for a cocktail), but they tasted great none the less.

In conclusion this is probably one of the nicest, cleanest hotels i have stayed in but it lets it self down by a few things such as the cost and a before mentioned issues with the check in. One member of staff, José, stuck out for us during the weekend who was very friendly and helpful and seems to really enjoy what he does.

We payed £310 a night for a standard room, staying at the end of June.

I spent 5 nights here in the middle of June for a conference. I hadn't investigated the hotel before I arrived. I was expecting a typical European business travellers hotel with small non-descript rooms and conference facilities with no natural light. I was happily surprised. The hotel is in the city, next to the Vatican and within walking distance of the centre of town, but rather than being cramped and confined like most European city hotels, there is a huge amount of outdoor space - dining areas, relaxing areas and a large pool area. This changed the whole feeling of the trip. When we weren't working, it really was possible to relax and enjoy the surroundings. Breakfast outside was a delight, as were evening aperitivos. Getting some badly needed R&R by the pool felt almost sinful as we were there for work. And the staff - the check-in staff and the concierge girls in Red - made everyone feel like welcome guests. Rooms were small, but tastefully decorated. Having a Nespresso machine was a nice touch in the land of cafe.

While the hotel vastly exceeded my expectations, it wasn't perfect. The hotel is still new, so they need to iron out some of details. The few things I noticed
- the wait staff was incredibly slow. Maybe they were understaffed; I don't know. Most of the guests actually resorted to getting up and approaching them rather than wait for them to come to the tables.
- the air conditioning in my room didn't cool to the temperature it was set to. Eventually they were able to fix it, but the improvement was slight.
- Around sunset, all of the seagulls in the area like to use the pool as a giant bird bath. Knowing that was enough to keep many of us out of the pool.

Overall, as a business traveller, I adored this place. They made my business trip enjoyable and even relaxing. But if I were to come as a couple for a romantic getaway, then I think that some of the negatives I noticed would probably weigh more heavily on the experience.

Beautiful hotel, clean rooms with wood flooring. Very welcoming and professional staff – in fact the most hospitable of all of our Italy hotels from this vacation. They welcomed my tired family, fresh from international travel, with a towlette and complimentary drink upon arrival. Rooms were small, but expected in Rome. One of our two rooms had a slight air condition problem, but it was still comfortable. Location was ideal for Vatican visit (within walking distance) however, far from main city – Trevi Fountain etc. Beautiful grounds – most relaxing pool and spa. What was most appreciated was the spa facilities were included even if you didn’t book a service (they were booked solid for massages.) Nonetheless, we flew into Rome from Philadelphia, so spending our first day in relaxing spa robes/slipper, sipping tea and hopping in/out of the sauna/steam room was a great way to unwind and prepare for two weeks in Italy.

Room Tip: Relax in the spa - it's included in your stay (not services, but their facilities.) They provid...
