This is a fantastic hotel with wonderful staff, beautiful grounds, excellent service and lovely rooms. A rarity in Rome, an hotel with an outdoor pool, and with 10 mins walk of The Vatican. We stayed for 5 nights over Easter and could not find fault with anything. Highly recommended.

Our family of four (boys 9 and 12) had a great 4 days at the Gran Melia Rome in April 2014. The property is beautiful with gardens/landscaping and a gorgous pool and outdoor sitting area right outside of the Vatican. A little green oasis in the City of Rome! The hotel/rooms/property all are spotless and new. The staff were extremely helpful and friendly. The Junior Suite worked very nicely for our family - the "outer room" has a couch and they can roll in a cot. They also have a small number of adjacent rooms down a short "private hall" so that you can effectively have a two room suite (but you are paying for two rooms at that point). Breakfast consisted of a huge selection of meats, cheeses, fruits, breads, pastries, "British" bacon, sausage and scrambled eggs (eggs were a bit soupy but fine). Nice dining area and an adjacent "solarium" dining room. Every afternoon they would put out a selection of light foods/snacks/drinks if you were on the "Red Level" (came with the suite - I think that breakfast was also included in Red level). Location worked out well - I was a bit concerned going in as some of the write ups suggested that it was out of the mix - but the Vatican was right there - as was St Angelo's Castle - and there was lots within a 15 min walk (Rome is definitely a walking city) - beyond that it was a 10-15 min cab ride - no problems. The conceriege did have some misses on the restaurant recommendations - of the 4 dinners they arranged 1 was great (Assunta Madre - fabulous seafood), one was very fancy/expensive/fabulous food and views (Hotel Eden - needed a jacket) and two were bombs - expensive and bleh. Anyway all on all Gran Melia was a great pick for our family and our Roman Adventure and we'd definitely go back!

Room Tip: The Junior Suite can work well for a family - there are two rooms and the couch can be made up for one child and they will roll in a cot for another child.

Gran Melia is truly a 5 star resort. The hotel was immaculate with large clean and modern bathroom. We paid for the red level junior suite. Upon check-in, we were greeted by a specialist who gave us one of the best service of any 5 star resort. He catered to our every need, brought the check-in paperwork to our dining table because we were starving and was just charming and full of insight about Rome. The rest of our stay, we were always greeted first with sincere smiles and hellos. The concierge had great suggestions for restaurants. The junior suite was a bit small for 2 adults and 2 children with 4 luggages, but the small space was clean and the bed and linen comfortable and top quality. The location was away right next to the Vatican City walls and walking distance to the trendy Piazza Trilussa--the restaurants there
were delicious and you can get the best gelato there as well. We walked to morning farmers markets and to the Pantheon from our hotel wig a 6 y.o. in
tow. There is a panoramic view of the Vatican City and Rome at the top of the hill close to the hotel. This was our introduction to Europe and other 5 star hotels in Venice, Granada and Paris did not rival the Gran Melia.

Just loved it. All new and clean (in Rome even 5 stars are often dirty or old or kind of scruffy). Great garden, amazing breakfast, silence though being in central Rome. The best place I have been. Only problem is Wi Fi...but that is quite common in Italy. all the rest is just what you want at a reasonable price (compared to others).

Wonderful hotel and staff. Couldn't fault it! A wonderful location. Very friendly and welcoming even with 4 children in tow. We had a wonderful holiday in Rome from beginning to end. The hotel staff were friendly, especially Samuel who helped us plan tour guides and restaurants. Any queries or problems we had were sorted with a smile. Will definitely return to the hotel.
