“Stylish, enjoyable and quirky -- Be sure to get the right room!”
Reviewed 6 June 2013

This unusual boutique hotel has a wonderful quiet location a short walk from the Spanish Steps but a world away from the crowds. This is an area with neighborhood restaurants, some of whose patrons even seem to be neighborhood residents.

One of the greatest reasons to stay here is the remarkable roof deck which has a stunning panoramic view of the whole city.

The hotel is a very chic and modern establishment built within an old building. The theme here is "art," and indeed there is art everywhere -- some of it very interesting, some of it merely trendy. The rooms are stylishly furnished and the marble bathrooms are beautiful. The beds are very comfortable and the bedding is luxurious.

But there are quirks. The standard rooms are elegant but small. We doubt that most people looking for a luxury hotel would be really satisfied. The "junior suites" are much larger, have sitting areas and are a much better value. But beware of a problem with some of them. We were originally assigned a suite whose windows were semicircular oddities placed low in the room. If you bent down, you could see out, but none too much light got through in any event. These suites appear to be mainly (or entirely) on the first floor (second in American terms). Avoid them! The third night we got a suite on a higher floor and it was much better.

There are other quirks: The suite had a lot of light on the artwork, but lacked an adequate reading light. (When we asked for one, it was delivered immediately however.) While the roof deck is a great place to read or have a glass of wine, it is often closed in the evening for special events, as others have noted. Sunsets on the roof are supposed to be spectacular, but on our two available evenings, we were shooed away before the sun had a chance to set.

But it was all done very politely. Indeed, employees here are very pleasant and went out of their way to help us with a couple of problems. We didn't have lunch or dinner at the hotel. But the breakfast buffet is much better than most and is served in a beautiful room -- with lots of art.

Nice benefit: Our package included an excellent car service to or from the airport. Our driver, Alexander, was very prompt, professional and helpful.

Overall, if you get the right room, you should have an enjoyable and interesting experience. If you stay here, you'll have many restaurant choices. We enjoyed a delicious dinner at La Penna d'Oca, only two blocks from the hotel. We also liked "Gran Sasso," an informal neighborhood place a half block from the hotel, which was also a good value.

Room Tip: Go for the junior suites and avoid the suites with bizarre windows.

This hotel is a little gem hidden in the Side streets of Rome. It is very close to heart of Rome and near all the shopping areas. The rooms are absolutely beautiful, very clean and polished looking. We had a problem with our Reservation when we first arrived but the extremely friendly staff & management rectified our problem efficiently and with great proffesionalism. Many thanks go out to Daniel (the Hotel Manager) for making things right when things go wrong. You guys went over & above to make our short stay a very happy one. I would definitely recommend this hotel to anyone!

Friendly, knowledgable, and very hard-working staff in a first-rate facility. Excellent and innovative Michelin-starred restaurant. I have stayed at, and enjoyed, the Hassler, but prefer the First. My wife and I felt extraordinarily well looked after, and are looking forward to returning on our next trip to Italy in September.

Love the modern decor of the rooms, the very comfortable bed and gorgeous marble bath! We enjoyed the neighborhood and walked to all the major sites (except cabbing to the Colosseum). The rooftop bar was closed while we were there but we were able to enjoy a glass of wine late afternoon one day and the views are lovely. The staff could not have been more professional and courteous without the attitude that some 5 star hotels can have. We stay at a lot of hotels and they really have customer service down to an art form at "The Art"!
I will say that if you are a light sleeper you may need ear plugs as the noise from the restaurant was quit loud both evenings. Also, our room only had one small window at hip height with no view. I am not deducting from my rating as I always bring earplugs and was not expecting a room with a view. I hate to read reviews that are negative because the reviewer had not done their homework. For example complaining that there are no irons in the rooms, they did not like the location or the decor. That is what TA is for! Do your research and know what you are spending your hard earned money on BEFORE you make a reservation. Oh, and stay here it is a little piece of paradise!

I must admit I had second thoughts about my booking - it was quite expensive – but after checking all the lovely reviews online – I decided to take a chance, and I am SO VERY THANKFUL I did!

To start with a nice glass of prosecco while checking in and feeling so welcomed is highly appreciated after a long morning flight.

We had the most lovely, spacious, luxurious suite; “First Suite”, which is approx 56 square meters, two bathrooms, two seating areas, stairs up to the greatest hotel bed I have ever slept in, great artwork and understated luxury interiors. Everything felt new and clean. I almost did not want to leave our room to explore the city…

The rooftop, which was the reason I booked in the first place, had not opened for the season due to the weather, but I guess it is a tranquil, perfect place to enjoy the beautiful view with a drink or two and a nice summer breeze. We did not mind that it was not opened; we were perfectly fine in our room! Walking distance to everything is not a drawback either.

We had a long and wonderful lunch at the hotel restaurant All’Oro, it seemed very quiet, which is a shame, as the food and service was excellent!

I could go on about praising The First Luxury Art Hotel Roma, but to sum up my experience I will just write: In the eternal city, I am eternally yours.

Room Tip: The First Suites are superb!

Just wanted to share our lovely experience with everyone. They hotel is only 2 years old with only 21 rooms. Didn't realize they also had a michelin star rated restaurant which was a bonus!
Anyway, service was impeccable, the hotel, corridors, our room was beautifully decorated and smelled so so good too! We even got an upgrade which made our last 2 days in Italy so much more special as we are honeymooners.
Anyway, will highly highly recommend this hotel because it is so well located. WAlking distance to all the important sights and of course shopping for the lady! 5 stars for sure.

We recently spent a long weekend in Rome with our 7 month old Daughter. We arrived at the hotel around 12 noon and received a very nice welcome. Our room was not ready (This was expected) but our bags and reservation were dealt with in a very friendly and helpful manner. The hotel is in an excellent location close to the Spanish Steps and less than 30 minutes walk to the Vatican. The hotel is in a small quiet street but turn the corner and you have all the shops and restaurants you need. The hotel recommend a restaurant for lunch - this turned out to be one of our best food experiences of the weekend.
After the first round of Designer Shop shopping, we returned to the hotel and received the key to our room. The room was again excellent - spacious, 2 bathrooms, lots of storage and a very comfortable king size bed. The cot for the baby had been delivered and set up (A common omission in many hotels we visit) and we received a free bottle of sparkling wine standing in ice. A great start and we were already feeling relaxed.
The next morning at breakfast the staff could not have been friendlier - we needed hot water and items sterilising - all done with a smile. Breakfast is very good with a wide range of hot and cold choices - the coffee is excellent.
After breakfast, we asked for a kettle for our room (needed for baby purposes) - all provided without any hassle. Throughout our stay, the staff were excellent - whenever we asked questions or needed something - the answer was positive and helpful.
We plan to return to the First Luxury Art Hotel and would strongly recommend it.
