“Charming hotel, great location, amazing breakfast!”
Reviewed 16 February 2014

Located on a quiet and picturesque street, the hotel is ideally located for exploring the historical city center, and is also within walking distance of the Forum, the Vatican and Trastevere (we didn't use any transportation the 5 days we were there). The hotel itself is in a small and charming historic building. Rooms are quite spacious by european standards, although the bathroom was a little cramped, particularly the shower. Most rooms overlook the Pallazo Farnese (the French Embassy) across the street, making for a nice view out the large windows. Decor is eclectic and a little outdated, but everything is clean and comfortable. Breakfast is copious with a wide selection -- sort of an unusual mix of things, but good. The staff is very friendly and helpful, and were happy to do things like make dinner reservations for us. They also arranged for our car service to the airport, which comes free with a 4-night stay -- a really nice perk. Those seeing the "4-star" rating and expecting a American-style luxury hotel may be disappointed, but it more than satisfied our needs and expectations and seemed to be a really good value for the area. We will definitely return to this hotel if we find ourselves in Rome again!

Room Tip: Ask for room overlooking the Palazzo Farnese

To be honest, it suited us well as all the attractions were within walking distance - particularly Trastavere and Campo di Fiori for food. The hotel was spotless.

On the downside, I agree with other people in that the rooms were small. The hotel also lacked a bar or proper lounge area, which means that there was no where in the hotel you could stand relax.
The breakfast was good, with a broad choice though no hot food.
The staff were indifferent. Maybe a smile or two would help!
The best part is the location.

The best thing about Hotel Residenza in Farnese was that it came very, very close to what I both expected and hoped for when I booked: A cozy little warm room overlooking the backyard of the French Embassy. It was an excellent location for us; the service was friendly, attentive and helpful; and the breakfast buffet the best we've had in our recent travels.

We stayed for 3 nights at this hotel from the 22nd November. We arrived about 12pm and as the room was not ready (check in is from 1pm), we left our luggage and went for some dinner first. Once back at the hotel, the staff were very friendly and helpful and we were in our room in a couple of minutes. We had a room on the 4th floor; room 408. It was very clean with plenty of cupboard space and had an extremely comfy bed with plenty of pillows. There was also a TV, a hairdryer, a safe and a mini bar. The floor was tiled and they provided slippers which were useful after being in the shower so you didn’t slip on the floor. There were shutters on the outside and inside of the window which were excellent at night as it made the room pitch black. They were also extremely sound proofed blocking out all the noise of the rain falling on the scaffolding on the building across the street. The bathroom was a decent size, the shower was powerful and fresh towels were brought every day.

The breakfast was typically European, had a good choice, was tasty and had enough to fill you up till dinner.

There was a bar downstairs (although we didn’t see anyone use it) and also a room with a TV and a snooker table for anyone to use.

The location was excellent being less than 5 minutes walk to Piazza Navona, about 8 minutes to The Pantheon and about 15-20 minutes to The Vatican. Easy walk to any of the main attractions. There were lots of restaurants nearby, all of which were a decent price and a lot with heated outdoor seating. Although being close to everything, the hotel was on a side street and was very quiet so there were no interruptions during the night.

We paid £238 for the 3 nights at this hotel with breakfast which compared with most other hotels in Rome was quite cheap. The hotel had everything we could have needed for our stay and with the excellent location it made it the perfect place for our short break. Highly recommended!!

We paid a lot of money for a three night stay although and we were told this was a "deal" including a discount and free mini bar. The mini bar is the first I've seen with NO alcoholic drinks. There were also warnings not to put anything into the fridge! Sorry if I committed a crime but if I have to buy my own drinks I'm chilling them. There are NO tea/coffee making facilities so we phoned down for tea. We waited 1.5 hours as the bar didn't open until 5pm!! Not good. We looked online to see how breakfast was described, have a look, it's aparrently lauded. It was not good. Cold sliced egg on bread warmed in a sandwich maker anyone? And where was the bacon that's advertised? The walls of the room we were in were wafer thin I mean wafer thin. Congratulations to the young couple upstairs on their "performance". I'm not prudish but please in a 4* hotel?? When anyone closed a door the walls shook like a cheap tv stage set. The bathroom plumbing sounded like a jet taking off and there were ......stains on the walls which of course couldn't be tea or coffee.
Over all.... Given the location60/70 euros per night should be about right. The staff however we're lovely.

I paid a high price to take my partner here for his 50th birthday and our 11 year old daughter. The price should have bought 4 star at least and a little luxury. However this is not worth 4 stars and should be a 3 with lower prices.

The room was comfortable - not too small but not large either; small en--suite shower/toilet was fine. The hotel is in a perfect location - quiet but close to bars and restaurants. The reception staff were very nice and helpful all the time.

There is no restaurant and this, I should have realised, makes it incapable of really being a 4 star. We didn't try the tiny bar in a large room.

Breakfast was not good at all. In a dingy basement room without windows. Bread, meat, cheese, pastries were not great. Choice was small. Boiled eggs were sodden with water. Staff were harassed and un-friendly. Don't bother with breakfast at the hotel. Instead go to the cafe in the square for fantastic fresh orange juice, expresso and pastries (cornetti) which cost 7 euros for the 3 of us.

Although I booked more than 2 months in advance, this was my 4th or 5th choice of hotel as other choices were full. I was looking for a quiet hotel with free wifi, in-room safe, and decent location and this met all of the above. We had a room in the back of the hotel and we overslept one morning as it was so quiet - as long as we kept the bathroom door shut. Very little insulation in the walls between bathrooms and we could hear plenty of noise when the bathroom in the next room was in use. One reason I booked this hotel as the rate included a private car to the airport. When I made the reservation, I asked if we could be picked up at the airport instead as we were departing Rome via train. I was assured that we could and was asked to provide my arrival information which I promptly did. Two days before departure, I sent an email to confirm this and received several responses, bordering on rude, that stated we could only be driven to the airport. I copied and sent the email stating otherwise (perhaps this original was from the manager) and finally got a confirmation that they would reserve a driver to pick us up at the airport. All worked out in the end, but this caused undue stress right before our departure. The hotel is easy walking distance to many restaurants but it isn't very close to most attractions. We ended up walking a lot. After we bought our Roma pass, we did use Bus # 116 several times to go Villa Borghese and Parthenon and that worked out very well.

Room Tip: We usually go for quiet rather than view and were happy with our choice.

Today this old monastery houses a cozy hotel of 31 rooms in their original layout and fitted with poor art furniture made in the northern Italian region of Veneto and antique furniture restored by skillful craftsmen who also enhanced the household furnishings and the finely decorated china and glassware. The splendid frescoes that embellish some rooms contribute to create an atmosphere of past times. The passion for art and restoration is accomplished by two ladies Marisella and Carla who run the Residenza in Farnese with particular care offer guests a warm and prestigious welcome.
