“Terrible prices”
Reviewed 31 July 2014

We are currently staying here, and while I never review things, I felt the need to post a review of this hotel asap.

We’ve stayed in 5 star (and higher) hotels all over the world. This is a nice place and most of the staff is nice enough, but it seems they gouge you everywhere they can. I’ve never felt so overcharged and taken advantage of as I have here. It’s not located very close to restaurants, cafes or anything else, so unless you are gone for the whole day, you don’t have much choice but to pay the exorbitant prices. And the service or quality of the food and drinks do not come close to trying to justify the costs.

We went to the pool and it took 10 min for someone to come take our order, not a huge deal, but then it took 25 min for our 4 basic drinks to arrive - with a $75 bill!! And 2 of them were virgin drinks! I was shocked.

We then go back to the room to order room service for dinner and find that they charge 10 euros per person just to deliver to the room! I’ve never seen such a ridiculous charge in all my travels. An 18% service fee would have been cheaper!

We had also paid for the breakfast buffet as part of our stay, and one morning my husband wasn’t feeling well, so I asked the staff if I could bring him something back. They said sure no problem, we’ll bring it to you in the room. And they sure did, 1 omelette, a coffee and an orange juice, with a 35 euro bill! Had I known that I certainly wouldn’t have asked for it.

At a 5 star hotel I expect the prices to be high, but this has been ridiculous.

If you will only be here to sleep, fine, it’s a nice quiet place with comfortable rooms, but for anything beyond that you may be quite disappointed.

Room Tip: Our rooms overlooking the pool/garden were quiet, I think quieter than on the other side which is ov...

Ok, I will start by explaining the title, this applies to the hotel's concierge Mario who made our brief stay amazing, nothing was too much trouble from organising to have my husband's new shoes soled, the shoes were taken from our room whilst we were out, taking in Rome's sights and returned before us,in their dust bag with the finest of soles applied,no doubt by a master cobbler, they got VIP treatment!! Then we needed a car to take us to Umbria with just a few hours notice, Mario arranged for a gleaming black Mercedes,it was hired, delivered to the door, with the agreement made it would be collected from Pisa airport in 5 days time. This kicked off our Italian adventure in the spectacular eternal city of Rome before heading off to Umbria for a wedding and then on to explore Tuscany.
The Alrovandi hotel is beautiful,a tranquil oasis surrounded by the glorious Borghese gardens, what a treat to have such a wonderful pool, with 5 star service so close to the city and nothing beats a swim after a long days sightseeing.
Our deluxe room was so comfortable, king size bed, wonderful expensive linen, enormous bathroom with tons of penhaligon toiletries, Blenheim bouquet, which is my favourite, although puzzling they didn't choose an Italian brand.
We slept so well, so quiet, you wouldn't believe you were in a city, then on to breakfast which is simply a banquet, an enormous table laden with a buffet groaning with everything anyone could ask for and huge ice buckets filled with bottles of fizz!
The Spa looked amazing, unfortunately we didn't have enough time this trip to have treatments but with definitely next time we stay.
The lobby with its magnificent floral displays is a sight to behold, gorgeous white hydrangeas everywhere,it is beautiful, this makes the creepy mannequins very unnecessary.
Also the only negative comment is the same as a previous reviewer mentioned, check in, we were told this would be at 2pm, after several visits to reception we finally got our key at 4.45!!! This is unacceptable and the third time this year it has happened to me at other hotels that are members of leading hotels of the world. This needs to be addressed.Moan over.
Other than that it was a wonderful brief encounter, waved off on our next adventure by Mario!

Room Tip: Deluxe rooms are very comfortable and spacious.

There are very few times in one's life that one happens upon excellence but when one does one sure knows it.
i am moved to write of our experience at the above hotel as it was excellent.
There is no question to me that the front of house team is very important and that, as a guest, one needs to know that they will do what they say and immediately. it is one of the greatest luxuries to have someone help you when staying away from home.
the help at the Aldrovandi is sublime. nothing is too much trouble and nobody seems inconvenienced.
the open welcome continues through the wait staff, the chambermaids and certainly the concierge.
The brand new SPA LA MER is absolutely gorgeous, treatments are a top notch and saunas are an added appealing note.
The 2 Michelin starred resto is amazing and the garden is a real oasis.
I cannot fault this truly 5 star hotel. Well done Aldrovandi and the entire team.

Be prepared... The lobby is beautiful, but the service will disappoint over and over again.

We arrive early and we are told our room is not available until 2pm. Fine. Two pm comes...the room is still not ready. 15 minutes later....still not ready. We have reservations at 2:45 at the Borghese museum...we need to get ready. We literally had to stand at the front desk and pressure them. Finally, we get into our room.

Later, the room has the key that turns off the electric when you leave the room (since you should need to take the key with you). Luckily, we were able to take that part of the key off of the door key so that we could leave it in the slot and keep the air conditioner running. There is nothing worse than returning to a hot room in July. When we get back to room, the key is gone and all electricity turned off. Needless to say, it took 15 minutes of sitting in a dark room and trying to get help before we could get a replacement key and turn the lights back on.

We asked to speak to a manager....don't bother. All you get is "sorry, sorry, sorry" but what they really mean is "oh, well. Too bad". We spoke to someone acting as a manager. He listened to our complaints and we got the standard "sorry". Thee is no true commitment to the customer...sorry doesn't cut it when you are having problem after problem.

Later, we reserve the "free shuttle" to the city center. The shuttle only has 7 seats, so good luck getting on (which is why you have to reserve). We are standing and waiting for our shuttle. It gets there. What do you know...our reservation was never recorded. Really. Response at front desk... Oh, so sorry. (The people whose reservations were recorded were all French)

There was a distinct difference of treatment if you were American. If you are French or Italian, you are treated with respect. If you are American, they treat you with barely contained disgust. I don't get it.

Avoid this hotel...not worth the money.

Do not understand the comment about an up market "Fawlty Towers"? Just spent 5nights at the Aldrovandi Villa Hotel, we really enjoyed the experience, hotel located overlooking the Borghese Gardens and Zoo, peaceful enclave in the bustling City of Rome.as a Leading hotel member we were upgraded to a suite ( Living room and double bedroom overlooking the park. The garden and pool area is a real treat and a calming environment, great professional and friendly service. The Concierge and his team were excellent with good advice and restaurant recommendations ( even got us into La Pergula restaurant on short notice). shuttle minivan to the Spanish steps is a necessary and great "perk". Dined in the Oliver Gowig reataurant, excellent food and service. Unfortunately all this luxury comes at a price, but, worth every Euro Would like to return and will recommend. On this 3 week trip in Italy, we stayed at Leading Hotels of the World hotels.as an unlimited member we enjoyed great room upgrades, gifts on arrival, breakfast included and free WiFi.

Room Tip: Reserve a room overlooking the garden/pool area or the Borghese Gardens

Great Hotel! Excellent attention to the clients needs.
Pool zone with Bar very cozy and relaxing.
Pool side drinks in the eve are a Must!
Rooms very good and Breakfast just perfect.
They have a shuttle to P. di Spagna that I haven't used because taxi fare is cheap (around €10).
Don't miss this one. Even with children the pool and the kids breakfast will really help.

Room Tip: Pool side rooms are very very quite.

We had a very large and well appointed room with a large lovely bathroom to match, overlooking the outdoor pool. This isn't easy to find in Rome. The breakfast is outstanding, service is impeccable and the free car shuttle service takes you right to the heart of the Spanish steps in minutes. Sometimes it's worth it to not be in the middle of the action. Pool is not heated. Highly recommended.
