“Fantastic hotel in chic location for romance or business”
Reviewed 28 September 2009

The Aldrovandi Palace hotel has been the right choice: 4 days with my boyfriend to relax and discover Rome. Located in a chic area of Rome but still 10 min walking from Spanish Steps and the rest of the historical city center, the hotel offers even a shuttle service up to late hours to the center and back. The service was great, very kind and helpful personnel, the room was stunning with a great bathroom (TV in the mirror too!!).
Moreover the hotel has a peaceful and chic swimming pool to relax, where a great garden bar serves fresh and tasteful lunches. On top of this, in the hotel you can dine at one of the best restaurants of the city "Baby", with Michelin starred chef Alfonso!! Great stay, hope to be back soon...the hotel was so good that it was really hard to get out and visit the city!!

We-wife and I-arrived in Rome late August and checked in to hotel near Spanish Steps. Unfortunately the temp in Rome was about 36c and air conditioning which had been stated as feature in website was not functioning. We did not feel we could sleep well on street fron with windows ope to street noise and had been flying for many hours, so called and visited the Aldrovandi Villa Borghese where I had a reservation for 4 days later. They offered to take us that night or the next; a/c was working. We returned to first hotel and tried to get them to release us but had to pay 2 nights stay or not, so we stayed that night and moved to other next day. Aldrovandi is a great hotel with all facilities in a residential part of Rome next to Borghese Park. They have a personalized free shuttle service to the Sp. Steps that takes you in 5 minutes. Lovely outdoor pool, garden and courtyard. Breakfast was best we had in 3 weeks in Europe. Staff wonderful and had upgraded suite that was gorgeous. Was a pleasure to stay there 4 nights. I believe there is nothing best in Rome.

We had a terrific stay at the Aldrovandi. The hotel is first rate. Our rooms were recently renovated, nice size, spotless, modern appointments. Big comfy beds. Great bathroom, large, with every amenity. Housekeeping was likewise first rate, as was turn down service. Beautiful comfy robes and towels, the flat screen TV had a good selection of int'l channels. Huge windows in the rooms, with electronic shudders. The AC worked well. The lobby is large, usually not crowded. Not many people seemed to congregate there, however. Little bar area in the back, where there was a good selection of int'l newspapers.

Breakfast is outstanding. I think it runs 30 Euros pp or so but ours was included in the room rate. Try for this if you can. The selection was terrific, quality of all items also great. Fresh mozzarella, beautiful prosciutto and hams, great croissants and some of the best baked goods we have had. An ethereal lemon cake, and some excellent blueberry and apricot baked goods. Excellent coffee, fresh juices. Waiter service was professional and prompt.

One of our principal reasons for choosing the hotel also was due to the pool. It is in a very well done garden area, almost resorty. Huge and well trimmed trees, large size pool for swimming. Many loungers but, as expected, in August they can get full in the afternoon. Yet, the pool staff were very on the ball in making sure they pulled out additional chairs and/or got you seated as soon as someone left.

Concierge service was friendly and on the ball. Good recommendations and always ready with a map and pen to guide you. The porters likewise were friendly and professional, ditto the driver of the hotel shuttle, which is a real plus for the hotel. Of note, the shuttle will also drop you off at Piazza de Popolo or similar, not just at the bottom of the Spanish Steps.

The one downside to the property -- and we do think its a real downside -- is the location. Yes, it might be a not too far walk from "the city" so to speak but, there is nothing immediately around the hotel. When I asked where we could go to pick up some water and such (the bottle we paid for in the frigo bar was 9 Euros), we were told it was a good ten+ minute walk. The same for a bank for an ATM. In truth, when we travel, we realize location is almost everything. We would have liked to be more in the bustle of Rome. To walk outside and see things, people, cafes, restaurants, etc. That isn't the case at the Aldrovandi. While it may indeed be quieter at the Adlrovandi, we are fine with some city noise. And, for restaurants, sites to see, etc., we were in taxis most everywhere. Those aren't exorbitantly expensive (though not cheap), but its nice to walk places. In short, for a summer visit, with that great pool, it probably can't be beat in Rome and we wouldn't hesitate to return. If we return in the winter, we might head to a more central location.

This hotel offers you everything - hectic city centre of Rome is reachable in 10min walk through beautiful park (alternatively a shuttle operated by the hotel will take you at Spanish steps or back) and at the same time the back yard of the hotel together with the pool and gourmee restaurants offers you most relaxing atmosphere to escape from the hectic surroundings - perfect! During the stay the hotel stuff where invisible but always there to help you when needed, thank you all.

Great expectations from the website, a booking for a garden view plus honeymooner status... poor quality shabby 1970s room that felt like it was stuck up in the attic, no view of garden or pool unless you craned your neck. Incomplete TV reception on an enormous vintage set, no wifi (had to go to outdated business centre and then asked to pay...which seems so tight given price of rooms) only mens magazines on side table, awful complimentary shampoo etc (not even conditioner)....in fact a no sense of luxury at all. We asked to swap rooms which they reluctantly did after an hour's wait - a junior suite instead, facing the road which was fine and more modern. Large empty lobby, no papers, no real local information (surprising given it's next to the most fabulous garden with Villa etc nearby), gym was really unappealing and out of date. The only great thing was the pool which was wonderful. We did not try Baby restaurant as it looked so empty! DIsappointing really, but thankfully Rome is brilliant.

We stayed at the Aldrovandi Palace to celebrate our Silver Wedding Anniversary and it was simply perfect. The hotel is spotless. the rooms are spacious and beautifully maintained. It was fantastic having a swimming pool after a hot day sightseeing and the service around this area was first class.
The shuttle service to the Spanish steps was reliable and it was a pleasure to eat out each evening under the moonlight.
All the staff were friendly, professional and efficient.
We are planning our next trip already.

We arrived in the hotel to spend a week end with 2 other couples , so 6 of us shared the same vision with that hotel

1st the goods :
Very nice welcoming arrival , luggages taking care of and swift and efficient checkin where all 3 rooms were available quite quickly !!
room were clean tidy , 2 were renovated , 1 was a little bit outdated but bigger , i guess it was just waiting for to be refurbished
The swimming pool in a very nice patio area was an absolut treat as in august the heat can be really hard to bear :)
The shuttle bus to the spanish step was on time , very handy and the driver always friendly and curteous

The VERY bads :
We wanted on the 1st evening to book the baby restaurant , so we asked the front desk pers giusepe to book for us , he came saying it was fully booked ,
so I asked him if he could put us in waiting list , which is not unusual for a starred michelin restaurant based in a 5 stars hotel ,
believe me the man was rather annoyed even rude and I had to insist so he accept to put us in WL , I then asked him if he could advise an alternative
he said yes but we would need to take a cab as there was nothing according to him in the borghese park (wrong !! as i discover later in the week end there is
a lovely restaurant lounge bar with a viw on the city ) he didn't even mention there was a grill restaurant in the hotel bar where we could eat , I had to ask him about .
we fixed a time limit at 9pm , as we were waiting , later in the evening we went again to check front desk again , and spoke to a very rude woman Rosy
that was nlot aware of our WL agreement with Giuseppe so she called again the restaurant and again it was fully booked .
Finally 9pm came and trying to give a last chance to check ourselves at the restaurant , and to our surprise
we saw all the tables set up with candles and plates inside the restuarant , empty !!! , only few customers outside !! the maitre d hotel ,
told us he was fully booked so we asked what are the free tables for?? answer : we don't serve inside ! if still want to
eat inside I warn you there is at least a wait OF 45 mn !! all this with a very unfriendly tone of voice
as we did not want to force a restaurant to take our money , we left , but quite upset and bewildered !about the whole thing!

we decided that we would all have a nice light meal at the grill of the hotel
what a mistake !!!
1st the menu was as light as the offered dishes , we went for cold salads around 15 euros each , we don' t mind Paying specially if you are in a 5 stars hotel
BUT this has to be good and worse the price you pay , in that case this was a total rip off, and for that we had to wait 40 Mns (just for salads , excuse me !)
when we asked why ? anwser : the kitchen is the same as the baby restaurant and they have priority over the grill !!!! amazing isn't it ?
on the top the salads were all inconsistently done , I had mostly black olives , by husband had a tiny pice of tuna , we had to ask the waiter
to go back in the kitchen to get some proper piece of tuna (out of a can) .And he came back with plate full of tuna , obviously the so called chef was mocking us !
We also ordered some wine which was dicusting , the poor staff were doing there best to serve us but recognise they had few complaints
from customers about the wait and the food quality !

we wanted to speak to a manager , there was none !! after checking the waitress came back saying that if we wanted we could go down talk the maitre d hotel
of the baby to explain why we were not happy ! imagine that the only duty manager asking the customer to come to him to deal with a customer related issue !!!
so after all thes very upsetting events , we decided not to sign our bill and told the waiter that we would like to see the hotel manager the next day ! we were told that he was not working on sundays
she was panicked but did not have the choice , that is when a young staff , who was attending the bar that night came to see us , apologies many times , too many actually , and told us
he would talk personnally to the hotel manager over the phone to make sure he is aware of the problem ! unfortunately we did not take his name , as
it would have been usefull for what happened later . the next morning we were all in the lobby , when that same young man , came and advise it was all sorted the hotel
director was going to pay for our bill and we needed to worry anymore ! very strange I thought as even if a manager clears a bill as a gesture of goodwill
i believe it would have been proffessional of him to meet us and discuss of the issue 1st .

in the afternoon we all went to the pool , all the sunbeds were taken , so I asked for towels and said i would put them on the floor , but then I saw a matress and asked if i could have it
answer : no , I saw a sunbed at the back of the garden , can I have it ? answer : no , it is broken , seeing it was notjing i asked if i could get the sunbed and the matress answer : no ,
don't you see the swimming pool is full ! that was it ,the 2 swimming pool staffs were basically telling me to back of as the swimming pool was full !! incredible , there was 2 people
in the pool and the rest on sunbeds , and just because they had a shortage of sunbeds I couldn't stay !
I had to threaten them to call the hotel director to get the sunbed that they finally gave me !
during all our time around the pool we could witness ,to our amazement ,a very strange attitude from the staff , constently removing the sunbeds matress when a customer was leaving and
if a customer came just few seconds after tehy would put it back !! time was 5pm and the pool was only closing at 7pm !!! looks they were very keen to go home and close the pool
so they maybe thought by removing the matresses they would stop people from coming ?!!!

Quickly came the day of the check out , and guess what !! the grill bill that we never signed , was there on our final bill !!! + a minibar bill we never used !!!!
we finally asked to talk to the director who came and we discovered he was never aware of our problem and surely never cleared our grill bill ! so the young man
lied about everything ! the director listened all our grief about our stay in his hotel appologies and accepted to clear the grill bill + minibar .

Even if at the end the director did this commercial gesture , i think this hotel is not 5 stars , and i think so do my friends that this hotel is the worst 5 star LHW we ever been to , as nothing can excuse
a staff that lies to the customers !! I think it is easy to satisfy a customer who only spend 1/2 nights and doesn' fully uses the hotels services , therefore is less likely to see the flaws and issues
I wish good luck to the director and hope he will succeed in fixing all those problems , as he has a beautiful hotel and some staff (too few) that are trying their best to fix the bad services of others

Dear Sir, Dear Madame

First of all please accept my apologies for the delayed reply.

I have carefully read your comments posted on tripadvisor.com and please let me express my deepest regret for your negative feelings about our hotel. As boat captain in this beautiful property, I am terribly sorry when a client did not like our services having the impression this is not a first class hotel.

The management has no excuses, “Spectators see better than actors” and the client is always right. We strongly need to act and find the best solutions to solve all problems you carefully highlighted in your review.

I am personally acting along with the entire team of the hotel and I also attended to a meeting with all personnel of the Food & Beverages and the pool staff to share your comments and take the correct measures of prevention.

What happened has been the result of the terrific staff turnover we had in the hotel in last period. The whole staff should be more trained, more welcoming and professional.

On behalf of the hotel please accept my personal and frank excuses for what happened during your stay in our hotel and be really assured that every effort will be made on our part so as to be certain that a complaint of its kind will be avoided in the future.

I really hope to show my good willingness and you appreciate my personal efforts.

Sincerely
