“Great Staff, Excellent Location, Comfortable and Great Value”
Reviewed 5 September 2013

Stayed 4 nights - an excellent 3-star hotel, with friendly, professional staff who couldn't do enough to make my stay as comfortable as possible. Staff spoke good English and gave excellent advice on the best ways to see the sights and the best times of day. Also pointed me in the direction of local restaurants (with excellent food at great prices), while also avoiding the tourist traps. Not the most salubrious area (close to Termini Station) but this was a minor issue for me - the location is great i.e. a few minutes walk from the hotel gets you to Termini, and Metro stations for both Lines A and B - good shops and bars with friendly locals throughout the area. Giorgio (at the desk) deserves special mention - a true star, who had the patience of a saint with my (oftentimes) tortuous Italian .... Mille Grazie Giorgio !! Definitely an excellent hotel, at a great price - you won't be disappointed and you'll positively enjoy staying here. I will definitely be staying here again on my next trip.

Mum and I booked this hotel based on its trip advisor reviews and for its location. We arrived the 30th August and stayed four nights.
Check in was good, the lad who checked us in showed us on a map where we were and the main attractions. We were extremely pleased with the room allocated for us, it was of a good size for a city hotel, clean, well presented, light and the air conditioning was of a good temperature. I was a little cold the first night so I requested a blanket which was delivered immediately. The bathroom was a little small compared to what we are used to in the UK, however the shower was hot, the bathroom was spotless and the towels were fresh and clean.
Breakfast was lovely, plenty of choice, always fresh and tasty; Natasha the lady who looks after the breakfast was always cheerful and very helpful.
This is a family run hotel and you can tell so. Every staff member was friendly, helpful, polite and happy to chat to us. Reception staff all speak extremely good English, Father, Son and Grandfather all fluently, which was wonderful for us when asking them for advice or information on the city.
Location is fantastic, we could walk to the Colleseum at a slow pace within thirty minutes, the termini and hop on hop off bus (a must do, but use the Green Line bus its cheaper and does a better tour) within ten minutes, and restaurants, bars and the supermarket were right on the street.
This hotel and its staff really are fantastic. The location is spot on, and Roma really is a fantastic city. The Colleseum is amazing, a total spectacle, well worth seeing a night time too. The Borgeous Park is beautiful, just stunning. The Vatican was like sardines in a can, but well worth the visit just to see the Basillica.

We did visit a coffee shop just down the road, on the opposite side from the hotel, by the first junction crossing, with tables and chairs out side (its name was long and started with a P) DO NOT go here, they tried to rip me off...big time! 10 euros for a coffee and can of coke that clearly stated on the menu 5euros! I must say they got 5 euros, and a good dressing down! But beware.

Overall I would say the Amalfi hotel is the hotel I would return to if I return to Rome.

We had stopped as a couple before and returned with our teenage boys. The hotel is small but we felt gave very good value and in a handy location for the city, with the termini a five minute walk away. Rooms very clean and tidy.
Mini bar reasonable!

The location near the train station suited us perfectly, but then we were in Rome to visit friends so were only concerned with being central and didn't need to get to all the big attractions this time. That said walking to the Colusseum is pretty handy and you're not too far from anywhere then - but we're happy walking 20/40 minutes to get somewhere.

The triple glazed windows made the location possible - even though the street outside was very loud we slept soundly. Otherwise it was very standard/poor. Check in and out was so slow - we're patient and generally happy travellers but this was just so inefficient. The room was so tiny that we barely had space to put our luggage down (small 2 suitcases in total). It was also a very dark room - even in the middle of the day we needed lights on. Furnishings were dated. The place was clean, but not spotless, which wasn't helped by the worn look of carpets etc.

All this would have been ok were the place really good value, but I'm afraid at the price we paid 180 per room per night was shockingly bad value for the actual room and service.

Dear Guest,

Thankyou for reviewing us.
Reading what you wrote i couldn't believe you're we're speaking about our hotel.

I mean we really keep care of it (is a business family), we know to be better than the most part of all other 3 stars hotel in the area (we're in this business from 35 years and we know most of them) and we have a good tripadvisor ranking (91% suggested, 14 poor comment on 433 reviews).

For sure we will think about you words to improve our standards but maybe you should think also why your opinion is so different from all other expert travellers.

When you book a room nowdays you know perfectly where you'r going . With TA you can read reviews but mainly with TA you can see photos of other guests. We have 82 photos available!

1) Our location is sure very good. We're 10 minutes walking form the Colosseum, in front of the amazing Santa Maria Maggiore. Thanks that you told this!

2) It's very strange the slow check in that you reported. Generally during the check in time we register documents for our guests, we give a map, the time of the breakfast, we ask if need a kettle, we give the password for the free WiFi and the key of the room. I'll investigate further why it takes so long that an happy traveller becomes unhappy :). Maybe is time to quit job for our grandfather..

3) If you didn't like the room why you didn't advise us? Also during the night when you checked in (during the day i'm there and i know that is not possible any slow or unfrendly check in cause i do it..). We're always happy to help our guests and we try to do the best. We could give you another room bigger!

4)In every room there is a window. You can see in TA all photos. Just open it and the light will came. If you have any problem in opening the net mosquitos call us at the reception (n°9) and we will be glad to help you!

5) In my long experience i understood that there are some people that don't like carpet. Is not important if we change very often or not. If don't like it means that the carpet is worn. But we have more information than you about this and we can tell that is not true what you tell cause we have changed it in the last low season (january, february) and also we repainted all the Hotel. If you don't like carpet or the color of it just advise us and we will move to a non carpeted room. We re here to help you.

6) The price you paid is the normal price (and not the higher) for all 3 stars Hotel in the peak season of the year (April, May) and (September , October). Before telling that the price is too high look to other Hotel prices (we have also a nice B&B not far from the center: B&B Cupido, high reviews and lower prices but is not an hotel and is not in the city center of Rome). Now i give you a suggestion. Go on some website for comparing price and insert this travelling date: 14 set (one night high season), double room, Rione Monti (where we are), 3 star Hotels, ranking more than 7,5. You will see that all hotels has more or less the same price. So the price is not only the cost of the Hotel but also the cost of the location in a certain time . Rome is expensive in the peak season (is expensive for us as well) but you're in Rome! If you then change the date and insert a low season period you will see a price that is an half. If you will insert another location the price will be even less (there are many nice town near Rome amazing to visit. (For example Ariccia where you can eat the tipical porchetta).First point: SEASON

7) Dimension of room. This is a tipical problem of European Hotels (in the historical cities). The law tells us the regular dimensions, we follow it but then some guests tells that rooms are very small. I think that this depends how people are used. Some people have a nice house with garden, some house has more than one floors, the rooms are bigger etc... Well for us is a dream if you're not millionaire, in the citycenter of Rome a 50-60 sqm flat cost around 400.000 euros. With this money in many other places we could buy a nice house maybe 2 floors with garden but in Rome we buy a small flat (if lucky with small balcony). Every place has its value. This is the second point: LOCATION.

8) You have rated:
1 of 5 cleanliness: also from what you wrote it was clear that Hotel was clean. To give one you should find an animal (and not small) in the room!
1 of 5 rooms: if you think rooms are so bad we accept it but we think that you were very lucky to come here. You think so about one of the best 3 stars in the area. I don't want to imagine if you went in others.
2 of 5 service: Maybe you spoke only with the night porter cause considering that during the day i stay there i know that we're always smiling, always available for our guests and for sure more than the normal cause we're not just people working there to get money at the end of the month (cause is a family hotel from 35 years).

You have a big powers with TA review but remember always to use in the right way cause is not just a game but this can help or destroy the business of an Hotel/restaurant etc. Before telling everything is terribile think twice if you asked help, if you really can tell that the service is poor and the room is terrible. Think if choosing an Hotel in the city center it was too expensive in general (for the season) before telling that the hotel is too expensive .
This is just a suggestion, not from an unknown worker of a Hotel but from a family that works here from 35 years, that renovated the Hotel two times (before was not even elevator) and that every day work hard for its guests and to keep the Hotel one of the best 3 stars in the Rione Monti.

Aniway i think that also your review help us to stress some points and in particular that if you have any problem you can tell us (maybe a bit before). We're ready to help you , just speak with us directly and not after 5 months by computer!

Regards

I booked this hotel after reading the Reviews and I am glad I did. The location was great, very near the Termini Station which is the major hub in Rome, can get anywhere from there. I would recommend walking from the train station to the hotel since a cab cost us 13 Euros, which was ridicilous, the hotel is probably less than 10 minutes walking. We arrived at 10am and check in was not til 230pm, but they were very accommodating and they had our room ready when we arrived. The elevator is is very small and can only fit one luggage and 1 person. The room is small, but that is expected, we had to put our luggage on the closet. The bathroom was spacious for us and had no issue. The AC worked perfectly for us since it was freaking 90 degrees all the time we were there. The Wi-Fi was great and we had a great signal all the way up on the 4th floor. The breakfast was included and it was great, Rolls, lunchmeat, coffe, juices and cereals, saved a lot of money there since Europe is expensive. The only issue we had was the bed, they were 2 twins just put together, for sleeping it was fine since we just stayed in our sides, but for other stuff, it made it more difficult. The staff was very friendly and would help us out in anything we needed, they made the trip easier for us. We loved this hotel and next time we are in Rome we will book again

I picked this hotel because we only had a quick day to spend in Rome, and the distance from Termini was perfect, 5 min walk max.
Room was clean, bed was confortable and breakfast was excellent.
Hotel staff was very helpful!
Would stay here again if i needed to be close to Termini again.

This is a good hotel for short 1-2 day stay, especially if one has to use the Termini station early and only needs for bed and shower.
Wouldn't recommend for longer stay thou, people with the full-size luggage, for larger persons or persons with restricted movement.

Pros: The rooms are kept clean, friendly staff
Cons: The lack of space and outside view, neighborhood

The hotel is at the Termini area by the Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore at the top of the hill about 20-30 min walk from Colosseum, in an old renovated house. The rooms have old style decoration and are really small (the stay in rooms have carpet floors), even for European standard. There is no real windows to speak of, perhaps because of the warm weather. It add up the cupboard effect. The Russian staff kept the rooms very clean, which was wonderful, including the bathroom. Breakfast room has a couple of terrace tables, but never had to wait more than 5 min. Had to move carefully thou, because of the space. Breakfast is lighter version of continental (the happy Russian lady cheers up the cranky man's morning). The rooms have an efficient air conditioning, but the beds had only sheets as covers. After a warm day it felt like a refrigerator, so be prepared to have fool socks and flannel pyjamas in hand. It would have nice to have a possibility for tea or coffee in rooms, and there was a space for the electric kettle, but after asking for it we were directed to use the minibar. After midnight the street below is not so noisy anymore, however being a typical old European hotel the walls are paper.

The Termini neighborhood is not the best for hanging a round during late evenings, there is some sketchy people grouping. There is a couple of cafes at the corner of hotel open for later evening thou (asked 8e (~£6.8) for pint).

Dear Guest,

Thankyou for reviewing us.

We're happy you liked the cleanliness of the Hotel and our staff.

We're sorry you didn't like the location of the Hotel but we think that being in front of the Santa Maria Maggiore Basilica (one of the most famous church in the world!) is a pro.
We have rooms on the back side with the view on the back of the Hotel and rooms facing the amazing church (just opening the window). Advise us before and we will try to reserve a room as you prefer.

For air conditioning. In August the temperature reach 40 degrees and is important to have a powerfull air conditioning that keep the Hotel cold enough. There is the possibility to close it with the remote in the room in case is too cold. It is not necessary to bring flannel pyjamas.
We understand that some people like to sleep with airconditioning opened and with blanket even in summer. In this case just advise us and we will bring it in the room.

Please accept our apologize for the kettle. We provide kettle for free on request. Probably our receptionist didn't understand your request cause is not possible to find a hot tea in the minibar :)

We hope to see you again in the future.
Regards
