“Great hotel and great staff!”
Reviewed 4 November 2013

I have just returned from this hotel having booked a twin room overlooking Santa Maria Maggiore. This is a fabulous hotel, with very friendly and helpful staff. The hotel was exceptionally clean, there was a safe in the room at no extra cost which was great. The restaurant where you have your breakfast has wonderful views and the dinner was excellent. It is a wonderful location but do be aware that it takes about 15 minutes to walk into the centre of the city. Ok at the start of the day but a bit tiring after a day's sightseeing. Would I stay again - absolutely!

Just back from a visit to this hotel and would thoroughly recommend. The check in was good and luggage taken to room immediately by the porter. Rooms of a decent size for Italian hotel, with safe provided, coffee and tea facilities, these were replenished daily and linen and towels changed daily and room kept spotlessly clean. Sound proofed rooms so heard little noise from street. The Santa Maria Magiorie is in front of the hotel but the last ringing of the bells is at 9p.m. and don't start until 7 a.m. in the morning. Breakfast is served on the roof terrace with great views of the city.

Only downside I would say is that the lift goes to floor 5A and there are a good few stairs up to the roof terrace so not really suitable for those with walking difficulties.

Would certainly return to this hotel.

Charming, clean hotel in a very convenient location. Very, very helpful staff. Very nice roof top restaurant and bar with a beautiful view of St. Maria Maggiore Basilica. Most enjoyable breakfast at roof top.
thanks

My daughter and I stayed here ten years ago and decided to try it again. It is in a very convenient place, opposite Santa Maria Maggiore. Tourist buses leave from this square and the Metro is only a few yards away. We like walking and we were able to see most of the popular attractions this way. However the hotel is at the top of a very high hill, easy to walk down but at the end of a day not so good!!
Our room was well furnished and a reasonable size. It was on the second floor on Via Carlo Alberto and we expected to hear noise from the street but the sound -proofing was very good. Handy to have a kettle in the room but the tray of sachets was not refilled and neither were the toilet rolls. The bathroom needed some refurbishment but it was a good size with all amenities.
The roof bar was a really good place to relax and enjoy the view over Rome.Breakfast rather disappointing.
This hotel has more good points than bad but if we go to Rome again we will try another hotel.

With wonderful views of the Santa Maria Magiorie right in front this hotel is ideal for a fews days whilst in the Eternal City. Double glaze windows keep out the noise of Roman traffic, the buzz of tourists and the ringing of the church bells. but the view from room 501 & 401 is fantastic.
The rooms are not overly generous but they do have tea\coffee facilities, in room safe, and a bath ( that is the deluxe rooms have) Check with your agent about standard rooms.
Breakfast is on the terrace overlooking the city below. Selection is basic and a bit repetitive. Vegans miss out a lot in Italy.. be prepared. However the pastries are delightful.
The Staff could be friendlier..However once the ice was broken tended to thaw a little.
Breakfast ladies need refresher courses on customer relations as everything seemed to put them out somewhat. Must have been trained by the retail manager from the Mas department store down the road next to the Vittorio Emanuelle park. Some of the most insolent and rudest customer service to be encounted anywhere..Diabolical.

Myself and companion stayed at this hotel before and after going to two other Italian cities. As many people claim, Mercante Palace it is indeed convenient to the railway station, the underground, shops, restaurants and Santa Maggiore Cathedral if religious sites and pilgimages are important. Thankfully with the double-glazed windows, our room opposite did not carry the sound of bells, traffic or people.
Nearby is a park where unwanted cats are fed and cared for but they certainly are not hungry but they are a delight to watch if you like them. Opposite is a department store called MAS but should be renamed MESS but is very cheap and full of bargains if you can find them and can be bothered to deal with the jumble, chaos, escalators that don't work and unobliging staff.
The hotel room tended to be small but tasteful and seemed insulated in the walls and so hotel noise such as doors and footsteps in the passge or overhead which can be a huge problem in those old wooden-floored buildings did not disturb or intrude. The bathroom though was spacious and was a proper one i.e. it had a bath.
There was a pleasant breakfast room with views if you wanted them but it had to be reached by a steep number of stairs from the furthest landing to which the elevator went ; disabled people would not be able to cope with this. Breakfast staff were efficient if somewhat indifferent and lacking in any conversation.
The food itself was rather limited and there was very little provision for vegetarians or the diet- conscious who did not want to be eating meat, cheese and a kind of fat-filled quiche that was there every morning. Other hotels of this type usually provide scrambled eggs at least as well as tomatoes and mushrooms and similar but not this one; it was the same without variation each day.
Of the three men at Reception, they were rather impersonal at first but Roberto thawed and became friendly by our return. The best of all was Claudio who communicated and was very helpful with getting our airport transfer to arrive - which, thanks to him, it eventually did.
Best of all, and I repeat, besides the proximity to places, was that both our rooms on both stays were quiet...at night anyway. The first one we were given was at the top and below the restraurant. Up until about 8 each evening there was a lot of dragging sounds as breakfast was being set up but it was silent by 9 at the latest.

When we arrived and checked in, we were escorted down the street with our luggage in tow and then up a steep staircase lugging our own bags to our "executive" room. These rooms looked like they were part of an old apartment building, and we paid 10 euros more! To make matters worse, our room door could be pushed open from the outside even though locked. We left to have a drink on the rooftop lounge, which was lovely, and they bellman said he would fix the door. We eventually found the bellman on the street, and he told us that he fixed the door. When we checked, the door could still be pushed open. The bellman told us we were pushing the door too hard. We asked for another room, but we were told there were no other rooms available. When I insisted they get us another room in a different hotel, they miraculously found a room in the main part of the hotel with a terrific view. The only bad part was that the new room smelled like smoke so we needed to sleep with the window open. They were going to give our room to someone else I would not recommend this hotel to anyone staying in Rome. The staff was dishonest and our room (not sure of others) was unsafe.
