The duke hotel is a nice hotel with big room and a very friendly staff.
The location is not the best, but the shuttle to piazza del Popolo helps a lot! Anyway if you want to go out for a quick bite, you'll have herd time, but if you're looking for a small place to stay and feel a bit like home, this might be the one (at a good price).

My husband and i just arrived home this morning from our trip to Rome, after a 4 day break to celebrate our 32nd Wedding Anniversary, and to be truthfully honest we could'nt wait to get back home and away from the Duke Hotel.

On our arrival to the Hotel, the staff on duty in reception sadly all looked like they had just returned from a funeral, no one helped us with our baggage, plus no real hint of a welcome to us. Our room was ok, but very depressing, dark, with terrible views of other dirty looking apartments, we had bars on our window which i hated, but the worse was to come and that was the bed, it was awful, i have a bruised hip right now sitting here writing this, i could not sleep sound because of the pain caused in my hip from the hardness of this bed, twinned with the noise at night from the hotel, I also have eye bags on bags tonight to go with my poorly hip.

We were disgusted that we could'nt get a English channel on the TV apart from the World News, that really annoyed us, how un-welcoming to guests visiting from other countries. We did ask about how to get a few of the films on payview from Sky, but we were told they do not have them, even though they have booklets in your room that indicate that they do.

My husband booked this trip without me knowing as a lovely surprise, so the evening before we left i had a quick peek online at a couple of reviews, they frightend me a little bit, but i didnt say much to my husband incase he thought i was being ungrateful.

Thank god i did take a look, because of other guests reviews, i read that there were no tea/coffee facilities, and with a tea-aholic husband, we were able to pack a travel kettle, mugs & teabags! Thank you other guests your reviews helped us out more than you know.
We have travelled a lot and have never been anywhere that didnt offer this service, again very bad.

Breakfast was also a bit of a let down, two mornings no bacon, the coffee was disgusting, but i overheard some other guests ordering nice coffee, so we also asked for nice coffee too, staff were unhelpful to the point of looking moody, but we got the coffee. No toast unless you ask for it, again i heard a guest ask for 2 toast, so again without hearing this we would'nt of had toast. Iv'e had more fun at my dentists than in that room in the mornings, there was just a painful silence, it really needs some background music, it might help lighten the mood to start your day, just saying, after all if your in holiday mood, a nice little melody in the background may help the staff to feel happier in there work, which could rub off on the guests.

Shuttle bus was a big help if you can get on it, we were lucky most of the time booking it, apart from last night, so it was a quick visit to the local shop to buy hams & Cheeses, then we had a little picnic in our room instead of eating out whilst watching the world news (again) you are stuck really to do anything else in that area because there is nothing around you.

The shuttle bus should really be bigger, like a small coach instead of seating just 7 people, or maybe two or 3 mini vehicles would help matters.

Luigi was a delight when he drove the shuttle bus, a really lovely man, funny, friendly and a big asset to the hotel, he was the only friendly member of staff we met in the time we were there.

Not all was lost, we had a lovely time outside the hotel, visiting all of the wonderful places in Rome, but if like i us you would have wished for the whole of your day to feel great, then dont stay at this place, we wont ever go back. But enjoy Rome it is great.

Just dont stay here.

The reception service is dismissive and rude, they don't show you to your room, or offer any courtesy.

The beds are hard as rock, the lighting and decor is dark and so outdated as to be scary. The balcony doors don't lock properly which is a safety hazard (don't get excited about the balcony - it faces other rooms or walls, awful views). Everything in the room/bathroom is old and awful, and the wifi is a huge hassle to set up.

Don't stay here - unless you have no other option and need somewhere to sleep that isn't an airport bench.

The best thing about this hotel was the shuttle they offer to a nearby location with a metro stop. The bed is harder than a wooden board. We had ants crawling in our bathroom which was not resolved after reporting the problem to the front desk. The absolute worst however was the extremely overpriced food that severely lacked any taste or quality. Do yourself a favor and steer clear of this hotel!

We booked a suite at The Duke and unfortunately as soon as we entered our room we could smell something strange. It was a sort of sewage-type smell mixed with air freshner coming from the bathroom. We did mention this to the hotel staff and no aplogogies were offered....There was obviously a problem with either this room or the plumbing of the hotel as the smell never disappeared during our stay, and our only option was to keep the bathroom door shut at all times. The following 2 mornings when we showered there was no hot water in the room either. We did mention this twice to the hotel staff and no aplogogies were offered. The complimentary robes had other people's hair on which made me wonder whether they had actually been washed at all, so we never used them.

There were no tea and coffee facilities in the room, no english TV or news channnel, no proper bar and no facilities for children or teenagers to amuse themselves for a short time.

The hotel is not near the town centre either and therefore runs a free shuttle into the town, but unless you book way in advance there is little chance of being able to get a seat so this was no use to us as we were only in Rome for 3 days.

We also had a complimentary 3 course meal included in our package and we saved this for our last night. Our travel agent had previously advised the hotel that some of our party had serious food allergies and this was even written on our hotel booking paper work but when we came to order our meal that evening, we were advised that we could not choose from the restaurant menu but the 3 of us would be given the chef's choice of meal. We asked what that would be but unfortunately given that we didn't speak Italian and that the waiter could not speak English, we didn't want to risk a trip to the local hospital! So another disappointment for us...

I would definitely not recommend this hotel at all.

After crossing the Atlantic on our cruise I was looking forward to a relaxing day of rest. Booking this hotel was plain and simple. I prepaid for the hotel to get the best rate and upon our arrival the staff was both pleasent and welcoming. (A helpful hint would be to call the hotel and ask for the shuttle to pick you up at the drop off point, where the metro station is at Plaza del Popolo). It would have saved me a bus ride and walk up the street to the hotel.

All in all my room was a double suite with balcony, which Mario upgraded me to, the bathroom is marble and the tub is deep, which I enjoyed with a large glass of wine to soak in. In the morning the breakfast was perfect, with fresh fruit, sausage, eggs, various breads and pastries, and the coffee was so good. The shuttle is easy to coordinate with the staff the evening prior to your daily excursions.

The desk staff and shuttle driver are very accomidating and a pleasure. I asked for directions to the pharmacy and the desk staff called before hand to ensure they would be open as it was a half hour to closing time, thank you.

I will deffinately come back to the Duke. Mario and Luigi are pefect hosts and made our stay very enjoyable. This Italian hotel is a perfect home away from home.

Room Tip: I stayed on the 5th floor with a balcony. I enjoyed the evening air and unobtructed view from my ba...

We were upgraded to a small suite on arrival. The room was spacious, clean and quiet. Breakfast was plentiful and varied by Italian standards. The great thing about this hotel is the friendly, professional service given by the staff. We found the reception desk staff exceptional and their language skills impressive. The location of the hotel in a quiet suburb wasn't a problem and we used the free shuttle bus everyday, though you should book your place on the shuttle the previous evening if you want to get an early start. It takes about 10 mins on the shuttle to Piazza Popolo from where you can walk to most major sights or take the metro. The hotel is within walking distance of the Borghese gardens and there is also a selection of local restaurants at Piazza Euclide about 5 mins walk from the hotel, this also where the nearest metro station can be found.
All in all we thoroughly enjoyed our stay at The Duke and will use the hotel again when visiting Rome.
