The Duke hotel in Rome was recommended by a travel agent. I was a little concerned because it is somewhat out of the city center. However, a taxi ride from the train station for three people with six bags was under €20. A good sign.
The hotel is elegant and in a nice suburban neighborhood. It is currently undergoing renovations and so we could hear during the day some distance banging and drilling. The hotel staff were very accommodating including changing our room without a problem to put us further away from the noise. Our room was comfortable and pleasant with a really nice, large bathroom and beautiful views. The free breakfast was extensive, generous and fresh. The staff bent over backwards to be friendly and helpful.
In order to get into the city, the hotel provided shuttle about hourly. It helps to reserve space as it gets filled up very quickly. As alternatives, there is a bus that comes very close to the hotel and a suburban train about 10 minutes away. Being somewhat adventurous, we enjoyed mastering the local transportation system. In the Square where the train lets you off there is an area with shopping, restaurants and some nice bars. We liked to stop there after a day in the city to have a drink and talk before heading back to the hotel. There is also a healthy food emporium 1/2 block from the hotel.
The hotel restaurant served decent fare and the chef was accommodating when asked about some dietary restrictions.
I absolutely recommend the Duke hotel as a place to call your home in Rome.
