“Elegant Rome”

A very elegant hotel with beautifully appointed rooms, the king-size bed was like sleeping on a cloud. Centrally located so it was easy to get around. The roof top terrace restaurant afforded a lovely view of the city and the food was very good.

Great location; beautiful room and view from our balcony; great rooftop terrace bar and restaurant; very convenient location to all of Rome's sites (8 minute walk from the subway stop). All staff were superior in their helpful and very friendly attitude attitude. Expensive.

The Sofitel Roma Villa Borghese is an excellent hotel located at the center of Rome just two minutes from the Spanish Stairs. This is our second time there and we enjoyed the superb service and the facilities which perfectly fitted with the atmosphere of our visit in Rome.

After our awful first visit, my wife and I returned to this hotel for a weekend (Fri-Mon) while attending a wedding (not at the hotel). Why, you may ask, even after I said I would never go back? Well, the hotel room was offered to us for free by our in-laws.

We checked in and were shown to our room. The room was a larger one than our previous visit and after unpacking, I was beginning to think that things would be much better this time. Boy, was I wrong. No sooner had the thought crossed my mind, when an almighty noise of a drill hammering a way shook the whole room. We couldn't even hear ourselves speak. No joke. So we left the room, and went downstairs and went for lunch.

After lunch, we went straight to the reception and told them that there was a terrible noise of drilling and that it had to stop. My pregnant wife and I were tired and wanted to rest before the Friday nights wedding activities. We were told it would be no problem, and that they would stop.

Lying on the bed and preparing to nap, the drilling started up again. Very loud. I hit the button for reception. Nothing. I hit the button for concierge. Again, nothing. Phone didn't work properly. I got dressed and went downstairs and did something I rarely do, I shouted at the receptionist. I was told that they would take care of it immediately. The hotel was full so we couldn't move room.

Although the incredibly-loud drilling finally stopped, the work continued upstairs with various distinct noises of workmen chiseling and hammering away.

So what else?

Minuses
- Curtains that don't block out the light completely
- 1 small cheap bottle of water at the bedside (despite two people in the room), never replaced after first night. A nice gesture, although quite common place these days (especially in the hot climates).
- Sound on TV wouldn't go below 15 so no quiet watching of TV. And it takes forever to actually get through the hotel menu system to get to a channel.
- Bath tub leaks on floor.
- Loud vacuum cleaner in hallway banging against the base of our door between 08:00 and 09:00. Despite do not disturb sign on door - had to get up to tell them to be quiet.
- Screaming baby on the Sunday night at 10:00PM and 04:00AM. Not much that one can do (we know).
- Breakfast room still looks like a dungeon and on the one day we went down, there were sugar packets all over the floor around our table that no one had cleared up.
- The roof bar and only restaurant was closed from 01:30PM onwards on the Saturday. So no evening drinks on the roof before the wedding dinner - went to the hotel next door. At least, I see they've added a bathroom upstairs.
- Received no A+ points for stay (although I didn't pick up the bill, room was in my name).
- The safe stopped working so had to call for help to open.
- Somebody should realize that just putting a nice fluffy undercover on the bed doesn't compensate for having an old mattress. We both slept at angles due to the sagging, felt like a sinking ship.

+ For the first time, through my Gold A+ Sofitel loyalty card, I was offered 2 free drinks (forget the room upgrade - has never happened).
+ Staff are generally helpful and nice.
+ Toiletries are nice.

I simply have to believe that for a 5* there is better out there.

This was my third Sofitel hotel experience and the best so far. I have previously stayed at their St James location in London and at their Washington DC location just off La Fayette Square. Everything however at this Sofitel just seems to come together from the service to the rooms to the location. The rooms at the Roma location are an excellent size and the place is just the right spot.Just around the corner from the Spainish Steps and not too far from other sights such as the Trevi fountain. Rooms are well appointed and a good size. Great breakfast served daily downstairs keeps you going till dinner. Nothing was a problem for the Front desk staff. Overall a truly enjoyable experience. Would definitely recommend this one.

Wonderful for a special occasion, otherwise somewhat expensive as you are paying for items rarely used such as a Bose ipod dock or large screen tv. Rome is a city to be visited not be locked away in a hotel fancy hotel room.
The room was spacious and comfortable. The staff attentive and helpful but unobtrusive.
The views of St Peter's and Rome could be enjoyed from rooftop restaurant ' La Terrace'.
It was somewhat cool the evening we were there and the restaurant manager immediately offered us blankets to shield us from the cold when we stepped outdoors to take in the views of Rome by night - a thoughtful touch by her.
The service was excellent and the food as one might expect from a luxury hotel.

We Cannot wait to go back to Sofitel, the terrace & views from it are simply devine whether it's night or day, overlooking the Villa Borghese gardens & the city of Rome.
We received the most amazing service and our wedding celebration meal was held for 20 guests on the terrace, all of which were extremely complimentary on the service & as mentioned before, the views.
We enjoyed a 2 night stay in the hotel ourselves and really cannot find fault with anything, the room was clean, spacious & extremely comfortable and due to the location was very quiet at night. The breakfast had a wonderful selection of pretty much everything you could wish for and a lovely breakfast room.
Just as impressive as the view is the food, our 7 course wedding meal was absolutely suberb & some of our guest's have already suggested we should renew our vows (next year, and we only got married 2 weeks ago !) just so as we can all celebrate it again at Sofitel.

In the year leading up to our wedding we viewed various hotels in Rome, all of course with roof top terraces & Sofitel was, the moment we saw it "THE ONE"
