“Great juxtaposition of styles”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 18 November 2013

Oooh la la...how French in the middle of Rome! The location of the hotel is SO very convenient to all the major sites (either by foot or by taxi). What we liked the most was the grand "old world" architecture mixed with modern decor, including a great collection of 1970's Italian papparazzi black-and-white photographs throughout the public areas.
The rooms were standard European-sized rooms...and the bath was very well appointed. We had a great view overlooking the gardens at the Villa Borghese.
The only thing that I personally think could have been a better choice was the venue for the breakfast. While located in a serene, quiet, and soothing basement area of the hotel, a morning person (such as me) prefer sunlight and views across the beautiful gardens.
We had a great lunch on the terrace with stunning views over Rome, and THIS would be a more appropriate place for breakfast.
But other than that, a great property!

Dear Guest,

We are delighted to hear that you had a wonderful stay with us at Sofitel Rome Villa Borghese.

We thank for your pointing out many of our assets here at Sofitel Rome Villa Borghese. The central yet quiet location - minutes from mythical sites and lively neighborhoods - is one of them but the one we are the most proud of is our high standard of services.

We genuinely look after our guests and love to indulge them.

We are very pleased to read that you enjoy 'Magnifique Dolce Vita' Exhibition.

As an ambassador of French culture and elegance, the Sofitel brand makes it a matter of honour to celebrate this heritage through numerous events in fields like literature, fashion, music or photography. Until mid-March 2014, the Sofitel Rome Villa Borghese will host the 'Magnifique Dolce Vita' exhibition with sublime shots by the famous photographer Daniel Angeli, an emblematic figure of this art form, crowned “king of the paparazzi”. The exhibition will take us back to the heart of the Dolce Vita era, of which Daniel Angeli was a privileged onlooker. His work was able to capture the essence and effervescence of the sixties and seventies, the beauty of Virna Lisi, Sophia Loren, Catherine Deneuve, Alain Delon... Recognised for his talent, he was close to many legendary artists such as Marcello Mastroianni, Ugo Tognazzi, Gina Lollobrigida.

Thank you again for your kind words!

We all look forward to welcoming you back soon.

Best regards.

The good: great location, nice rooftop bar with spectacular views, comfy bed (as usual at Sofitel).

The bad: small room (standard room), good luck with large suitcases..... Soundproofing to the corridor is not sufficient.

The ugly: housekeeping is definitely below standard! Our room was not made after a full day out. Upon request our room was cleaned but no replacement bottled water and no shower gel provided. After calling reception we got 1 bottle of water ( for two pax) and were told that another bottle would be 7 Euro. Are you serious????

Room Tip: Standard room is definitely too small!

Stayed 4 nights and the only disappointment was the room we were given for the first night (clearly had been used by smokers). We arrived late and didn't feel like complaining at that time so we waited until morning. The hotel managed our move to another room with absolutely no fuss at all. We were able to venture out into the city for the day and return to a new room with all our luggage relocated. Nothing more needed to be said.

The rooftop terrace gave excellent views of the city, especially in the evenings. Service here was also very good, and the staff remembered our preferences from one visit to the next.

Situated in the northern part of the city and not too far from the Spanish Steps we found this hotel was ideally placed for several trips out on foot to explore Rome. We nearly forgot to visit the Villa Borghese park itself, a real gem with spectacular views over the city and a pleasant way to spend an afternoon.

The pluses are that the room was quiet, the bed comfortable and the blackout curtains the best ever. The hotel provided two bottles of water daily. The turndown service provided chocolates nightly. The towels and robes were very good quality. The tub was very high and deep (hard to get in and out of), the water pressure was good and ample hot water. The safe was at eye level and easy to use. The free wifi (256) was adequate and connectivity easy to use. The room was clean, the bathroom was worn but clean.

The drawbacks were: inept staff (but friendly and who aim to please); the rooms are small and the bathrooms smaller; and, every hotel service is over priced for the value. The hotel is not conveniently located for most of the main tourist attractions and the local restaurants were mediocre at best. The side streets in the neighborhood are quiet and could unnerve some people who walk back late at night.

The hotel arranged car service to the airport for me – it was easy and comfortable at 75 euros (about a 45 minute ride).

A caution: Even though I had a confirmed reservation – three days prior to arrival I got an email that said they had a problem with my VISA card and if I did not provide alternate payment within 24 hours my reservation would be CANCELED. The credit card turned out not to be a problem, I had been using the card in Italy all that week; it was a hotel problem/error. I found the threat of cancelation more disturbing than welcoming.

Dear Guest,

Thank you for taking time to post your comments and for your positive feedback detailing your overall enjoyable stay at Sofitel Rome Villa Borghese.

We are sorry however to hear that the location of the hotel as well as the size of your room were not to your full satisfaction. Moreover, we do sincerely apologize for the credit card issue.

We do take all comments seriously and appreciate all the feedback we can get.

The Sofitel Rome Villa Borghese is considered centrally located, within walking distance of Villa Borghese, the Galleria Borghese, the Spanish Steps, Pantheon, Trevi Fountain and the most exclusive boutiques in downtown Rome.

The hotel is housed in a seven-storey 19th century historic building, which was originally a guesthouse belonging to the aristocratic Ludovisi Boncompagni family. And its main characteristic is indeed that all the rooms are different in terms of size.

Kindly allow us to mention that we have aligned our offering to other five star hotels in the area. Nevertheless please rest assured that we have taken note of your comments which will help us in our ongoing efforts to improve our service.

We are glad to see that the rest of your experience was satisfactory and we hope to have the pleasure to welcome you again very soon.

Best regards,

I booked my 48-hour stay in Sofitel Vill aBorghese based on previous 4/5 star reviews, and I was not disappointed. The concierge staff were very polite and helpful, the room had a great side view of the Vatican, and breakfast had a nice intercontinental variety (not so much for vegetarians I would say). The staff of the breakfast buffet are very

Whenever I call reception to ask for help operating the TV or fixing a Wi-Fi problem, their response was swift and efficient.

One more extra point for this hotel is well-deserved for staff's attention to details. I once asked front office manager, Annalisa, where I can buy more of the delicious chocolate that was placed on the nightstand, and she said it's only supplied to hotels. Not only did she direct me to a chocolatière store that sells similar delicacies, but I was surprised with 6 more pieces of this chocolate when I came back to my room at the end of the day.
Those little touches that make customers feel special and want to come back again to this excellent service.

Thank you Sofitel staff for this pleasant experience.

PS: One thing I couldn't enjoy fully is the rooftop terrace with a magnificent view of the city and the Vatican due to cloudy rainy weather during those days. I'm sure it's a delight to spend time there having drinks and enjoying the sunset when I come back in the Spring.

We were in Rome for 7 days in October 2013. Chose the Sofitel as we were able to get a very good price for this class of hotel.

Arriving early in the morning after 13 hour flight, we took a taxi from the Fiumicino, costing a flat rate of 48 euros inclusive of luggage. 40 minutes later, we were at the doorstep of the Sofitel, and warmly greeted by the doorman. Luggage was whisked away while we attended to check-in.

Check-in was efficient and attentive. Our room was not ready, so the concierge provided us with maps, explanation of our location, and some suggestions for early morning capuccino and cornetti. We were informed that check in is later at 2 pm, but they will do their best to give us the first available room.

The Hotel is well located. It is an easy 12 minute downhill walk from the Spanish steps to the hotel. But be warned, after a long day of sightseeing and shopping, laden with bags, the uphill walk back to the hotel can be a challenge. There is a supermarket nearby, and convenience stores around the area. Location is very quiet, next to Villa Borghese, and far away from the usual tourist crowd, very quiet at night. It is not in the thick of things, so if you are expecting buzz and vibe, best to pick a hotel nearer the other end of the Spanish steps.

Returning to the hotel after a long early lunch, we were shown immediately to our room, a lovely deluxe room which occupied the corner, and as requested, far away from the elevator. Our bags were already waiting for us in the room. I was surprised to see how big the room was, very nice size for a European hotel, very clean and comfortable. Decor is traditionally Italian. Separate seating area from the bedroom, a bit like a one-bedroom suite! Bathroom is small, but of serviceable, well stocked with Hermes toiletries. We had requested for an electric kettle and some tea cups, and this arrived very quickly. Large comfortable bed afforded a very good nights' sleep.

Front desk and concierge service were most wonderful, very helpful with restaurant recommendations. This being a repeat visit to Rome, I had a list of restaurants which I like to frequent. The front desk was very helpful in calling up and making reservations for us, reconfirming day tours booked and giving us all the essential information on the sightseeing sights.

Having so much to see and do in the Eternal City, we did not eat at the hotel, nor did we have a chance to have a drink at the rooftop bar, which is my one regret.

The Sofitel delivered on all counts, we were most happy with the luxurious accomomdation and service provided was impeccable. We will be back.

We arrived in Rome after taking an overnight flight from NYC. My husband and I were warmly welcomed by the staff at the front desk. We planned our day of sight seeing and we were off to explore Rome. When we got back to the hotel for check in time, there were some issues with our room. One staff was going to move us to a room that was not nearly as nice as the one we reserved. Luca, a friendly and helpful manager, stepped in and asked us to please wait a bit longer, he would see that everything was settled. He escorted us to the rooftop bar for a drink and he made sure that we got what we paid for. Luca took us to our room which was great, very large and spacious. He talked to us about restaurant recommendations and made sure all was ok before leaving! Luca was the nicest employee that we came across during our three day stay at the Sofitel. We stated at the Sofitel in Cartagena where ALL of the employees were great so this was a shock.

If you are going to have breakfast at the hotel, the wait staff are kind and pleasant and do the best they can to teach you quick Italian. The cappucino is yummy and the breakfast is adequate. Dinner on the roof restaurant was great...although we sat for 30 minutes at the table before anyone came over to us (we were staring at the view of the Vatican and didn't even notice the time), the food was gourmet and fantastic. It was getting chilly so the maitre d' brought out woolen blankets and wrapped us up so we could stay out and enjoy the fresh air and the fantastic view.

Overall, nice clean hotel in a nice area that is easy to get to all parts of Rome.
