“They tried to rip us off and in a way they did!”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 23 November 2011

We stayed at this hotel with my husband for 5 nights in November 2011. I do not know where to begin to write about the horribleness of this hotel. First, they did not allow us to cancel our reservation (we had to cancel due to family and health issues, the time we cancelled was two months prior to the time of stay-TWO MONTHS), therefore we had a compulsory stay to use up the amount, which I think is unacceptable for a LUXURY status hotel. Second, the senior staff of the concierge is clueless! Simply clueless, they have no idea about the attractions in the city. Third, during the check out, one of the senior staff of the concierge(the one with a mustache) tried to charge us more than the price we had agreed!!! Still trying to rip us off, when we showed him the e-mail that showed the price, he did not even apologize!! There were problems with the room too; The wireless was extremely weak, the closet in the room had cobwebs, and there was this terrible noise coming from upstairs -the restaurant floor, which the staff claimed to be empty. Lastly, the so-called michelin star restaurant of the hotel had a weak service, every time I ordered bread and butter, either the bread, or the butter, or both of them were missing! The risotto I had was the saltiest I had ever tasted. My advice; Watch when you make reservations to this hotel, they surely will never cancel it and they might even try to overcharge you!

We stayed at this hotel for only three days. The staff were always upbeat and extremely helpful. The hotel's restaurant has a spectacular view of the city. Although the food and presentation were nice, I felt it was extremely expensive. The room we had was beautiful and comfortable. Although it too was expensive, I was extremely disappointed that I had to pay to access the wi-fi. At $500+ a night, I don't feel that I should have had to pay for wi-fi. The location was nice, as we chose to not to be near the typical tourist areas. Hence, it was very relaxing and quiet in our room. As nice as this hotel was, I know now we could have stayed elsewhere, in a nice hotel, with all the amenities for much less money.

Thoroughly recommend this hotel for the perfect romantic getaway. The location is perfect and the service and quality was absolutely top drawer! We loved Rome and plan to go back with the Splendide Royal likely to be our place of choice once more.

My husband and I stayed here for 2 nights in late September and loved it. It is a small boutique hotel near the Villa Borghese in the Via Veneto area. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The staff was very friendly and helpful. Our room was beautifully appointed and had all amenities you would need. Our stay included breakfast which was plentiful and served in a beautiful rooftop restaurant. We were not far from the Spanish steps and although the Coliseum area was a bit of a distance we enjoyed the walk. There is nothing not to like!

We had a really good stay even though they had no room for us on our 1st night. Their mistake.

The staff were very apologetic and looked after us paying for the cabs to and from their sister hotel a few miles away.

They even popped a bottle of complimentary champers in our room when we finally did get to stay with them.

We spent our pearl honeymoon in the eternal city of Rome, 4 days in November, because originally we couldn't make it to have our wedding there. Hotel Splendide Royal was excellent: Genuinely friendly staff, lounge&room just beautifully designed in Italian-baroque style, although modern with everything functioning great (pleasant heating, good smell, very clean, very good bed&spacious bathroom, no noise, tasty breakfast with great view over the park).
We walked to see&hear Verdi's Traviata in All Saints' Church and to Borghese Gallery art museum, both nearby, with tickets in advance thru internet. Even to Colosseum we walked once along the nice shopping street Via Corso nearby. Mirabelle restaurant in the hotel is an experience too with delicious food, great view and waitors dressed in dress-suits.
Internet access to be free would be nice, and a cafe on the roof (planned) and maybe a little more info about the property's interesting (former monastry) history.
The only unjoyable experience: The taxi driver to the airport seemed to swop one of our two 50-euro banknotes into a 10-euro banknote (drive from airport cost fixed 40 euro+we gave a good tip). Still, taxis in Istanbul and in Dubai are worse and our other 5 taxis in Rome were very pleasant&reliable resembling high-class chauffers for Fellini film stars, nice even for us Pasolini fans.
We recommend very dearly, both this lovely hotel and Rome! Thank you!
