i treated my partner to a holiday at the hotel slendide royal after seeing the photos and reading the reviews of the hotel.when entering i found the lobby to be on the small side but i did find the checkin staff to be very helpful.i was immediately disappointed in the room as the only view from the window was that of the fire escape on the next hotel.as i had upgraded to a superior i had expected a view of villa bourgese park.we also found the bed to be large but the most uncomfortable that we had ever slept in.also for a 5 star hotel we believe the cleanliness in the bathroom not to be up to scratch as there was alot of lime scale around the bath area and a few of the fixings were hanging off the wall.we found the breakfast to be bland and the same thing everyday.also when i first checked in a counterfoil of my credit card was immediately taken which left me wondering all week how much extra i would get charged that i hadn't budgeted for.lastly although the hotel is ideal for short breaks and business stop overs i don't believe it is ideal for a weeks holiday as there are no real facilities and the bar area is just 2 chairs pushed into the corner of the restaurant

Beautiful quaint hotel in nice location short stroll to the Spanish steps and Trevi Fountain and the lovely Borghese gardens.Plenty of nice restaurants close by.Bedroom was a little on the small size but this was more than made up for with the decor, cleanliness and tranquility ,lovely fluffy dressing gowns and slippers supplied.Sweets were a nice touch also.Mini bar expensive though.Beautiful restaurant in hotel with spectacular views . Bar rather small.Porters at entrance were extremely friendly and helpful at all times, with directions and organizing taxis etc.

This hotel reflects european accommodation as it is meant to be experienced - civilized, easy, elegant, and quietly charming. Although not inexpensive, location, room size, furnishings, ambiance and service justify the cost. Overall, when weighing all factors, this hotel is superior value and I can't wait to return!

After seeing all the photos of the lobby, the tales of good service and the good location I decided to book a room at this hotel. Upon arrival I was greeted very well by the doorman and the checkin was very friendly and was a breeze. However you realise that this is a small hotel and some of the decor is dated. The photos of the lobby do look impressive on the website and you wonder what the rest of the hotel is like, but the lobby is what you see and is very small.

Location is good in terms of the area, but it is on a back street in the Via Veneto area. Cabs aren't to be found outside the hotel and there is the odd seedy bar around. While everything is easy to get to, when you are paying that much money, you expect to be in the middle of the action in Rome and this isn't quite the case.

There are around 40 rooms in total and the room sizes are very good. We took a triple room and this was organised very well. The decor is a little dated, but I would still say that the room was very comfortable. There is a standard 17-19 inch LCD screen and 2 telephones in the room. There is a walk-in closet and a safe. The bathroom is as you would expect in a 5 star hotel with 2 sinks and with nice toileteries. The room did lack tea/coffee facilities and the minibar is extortionate. The wifi internet is also very expensive.

We had an english breakfast included in our room rate and took this at the rooftop Mirabelle Restarant. The view from here over the Vatican is superb on a sunny day. However the prices at this restaurant is also very expensive and worth avoiding if it isn't included in your package. Service was also a little muddled.

The staff are very friendly and quite accomodating and told us where to pick up tour buses and organised cabs. They also provided complimentary umbrellas for hire when needed. However the conceirge service doesn't seem to know much and this resulted in our wasted trip to a restaurant that the conceirge told us we should be able to walk into with a reservation.

While the hotel was nice and the stay was comfortable, I was expecting it to be better located and wow me more for the money.

Within an hour of arriving at Hotel Splendide, we had a tour scheduled. When the taxi arrivied the driver quoted us a price of 50Euro. I asked the hotel bellman if this could be correct, it was so high. He concurred, that was the fixed price, so I bit the bullet and paid. The return trip, same route, was 7 Euro. Clearly, the bellman and taxi driver were working together to rip off the tourist. At a hotel rate of 630Euro a night, I would have expected the staff to be the advocate of the guest, not an ally of the taxi driver.

I found the rooms and decor of the Hotel quite outdated and not up to a 4-5 star standard. They do have a nice roof terrace though from where you can view some of the many sights of Roma and it's nice to start the day with a decent breakfast overlooking beautiful Rome.
Beware when booking through the concierge. The taxi he had ordered for me wanted to rip me off and then didnt want to provide me with a proper receipt (BTW: this is a general problem in Rome).

Totti5, Manager at Hotel Splendide Royal, responded to this reviewResponded 29 January 2009

Dear Guest,
I disagree with your comment defined the Splendide outdated without any details in reference in your review. The hotel have been inaugurated in 2001 and completely renovated in a 18 century palace that was a formely monastery. The style is a typical Barroque nothing to match of course a contemporary style, all the furniture are real antiques and of course the traditional decor seems old fashion to someone.
Regarding the taxi even though I agree that you may have experienced a negative episode
with a taxi driver, however we are not responsible of that and you you should next time call the city police.
Thank you fanyway or choosing us and best regards.
