My wife and I made a last minute booking for 3 nights at the Crowne Plaza, having found our original hotel (the Gallia) to be unsatisfactory. The Crowne Plaza is outside of the city centre, so not as convenient for sightseeing - however there is a shuttle coach and frequent public buses to the Vatican, from where you can either get another bus to the Forum/Colloseum (bus stop outside the hospital) or walk it in about 40 minutes. The hotel itself is very comfortable, with large rooms and beds, and the breakfast was very good. The restaurant in the hotel, where we had our evening meals, was good but a little pricey. With hindsight we maybe should have returned to the city on the bus in the evening and found a Trattoria there.
One tip I would give is, if you want to use the hotel wi fi, buy a drink in the bar (even a coffee qualifies) and you get 30 minutes free connection. Otherwise you have to pay to use the wi fi.
We would certainly return to the Crowne Plaza if we visit Rome again.More
