“great hotel, so-so location”
Reviewed 27 September 2008

We stayed here on our first night with a bus tour, leaving next day for So. Italy. Excellent hotel as far as cleanliness, size of room, amenities, bathroom, etc. However, as many other reviewers have said, it was not an easy walk to sights. We thought we could walk to the Castle St. Angelo, but didn't get far and realized we were uncomfortable on the tiny sidewalk/pathway vs. close-to-us traffic.

We know they had a free shuttle to the town centre, but it did not drop people close to our destination. We would have ventured out, but had dinner appointment time with the tour, so not enough time when we didn't know where we were going or how much time was needed. When we left on our tour bus for dinner, we saw how far it was to the Castle and realized we could never have walked it.....not only the distance, but the way to get there.

However, another couple of the tour took the free shuttle into Rome and said it was a 20 min. walk from there to the Castle, so if we had another day in Rome, we would have done so.

This is a perfect hotel for a stopover or a "just staying for the night til our tour leaves." We would have liked to stayed another day, as we would have taken advantage of the free shuttle and gone into the historic area. We would opt for this very good hotel, with large room at that location, vs. staying close to sights and not having such a good room and amenities, especially since the hotel offered free shuttle into historic area. This was the only hotel on our tour that had tea kettle & coffee maker in our room.

We did not eat at the hotel's restaurant, but several people on our tour did -- said the food was excellent and one man raved about a chocolate dessert.

I loved everything about this hotel. The location is no problem because their complimentary shuttle bus service into Rome is excellent. And the city bus, which stops near the driveway of the hotel, goes to the Vatican. We also took the complimentary shuttle bus service (departs at 0715) to the airport (FCO) which drops you off outside of Terminal C. We then took the airport shuttle over to T-5 where the check in is for American carriers and El Al.

The hotel rooms are fantastic. The beds are fabulous. The bathroom is large. There is a safe that is probably big enough to put most laptops in. There's also a tea kettle with tea and coffee available. And a mini bar which also has space in case you need to put something in it. Our room overlooked the pool area, and we had no problem with noise. The balcony was wonderful, too. There is a flat screen TV with 4 or 5 English channels.

Every hotel employee I talked to was very helpful and polite. We were able to check in a few hours early, which was great after a transatlantic flight. There is a business center available, but it costs 5 Euros for one hour of internet use.

We had dessert and coffee in the restaurant one evening. Not worth it at all. Expensive and bland.

The restaurant near the bus stop (turn right at the end of the hotel's driveway) was great. Very reasonable prices, and the service was excellent. Our waiter was a charmer.

I would not hesitate to stay here again when I visit Rome. I thought the location would be a drawback, but it wasn't at all.

Just got back from 3days at this hotel.
well first for the good points the hotel bed room was clean and there is a small balcony and a huge comfy bed.
The hotel shuttel bus is free and takes you into the centre of Rome and drops you off and picks you up later.
Hotel staff were friendly and helpful and there was plenty of sunloungers to choose from to sit down at which is rare with most city hotels.
The bad was the hotel shuttel bus has an option of 5.30pm bus or a 7.45pm but nothing inbetween so its either eat really early or really late so we would go early and have a few drinks first in a bar.
The prices at the pool were ridicolous 8euros for a coke and a water which would be appropriate if you were at a 5star hotel in Rome overlooking the vatican but this was an out of town hotel with rather shabby halls as they were decorating and I herd lots of guests complaining of overpriced restaraunt with terrible food so we gave the restaraunt a miss.
We did have room service one night of a club sandwich which was ok but you cant really go wrong with a club sandwich.
There is a shuttle to the airport but not to Campiono airport so its 40euros in a taxi but if you use the hotel taxi service its 65 ruro !!
This hotel was ok but to be honest if went back would stay in city only as if you get in at say 11am you either stay out all day and get back at 9pm feelung hot ,dirty and tired or you have the hassel of bus in and out again ect at least if you are in town you can go back shower change and go out later.

  • Liked — The pool had lots of sunloungers and the free shuttle bus
  • Disliked — needed more times for shuttle

We had a week in Rome and decided to stay at the Crowne Plaza for the last 2 day in Rome so we could just chill out by the pool. We stayed at Welcome Residences in the centre of Rome and did all the sights and after all that walking I was looking forward to doing nothing but relaxing.

The hotel was nice. Its in need of a bit of a refurb but it was still clean and tidy.

We had our most expensive meal in Rome in that hotel, and it was far from fantastic! Fortunately we were only there for 2 days, otherwise to eat at the hotel every night woudl have cost a small fortune.

The first night there was an event by the pool. I looked like a company had been holding meetings there all day and had a party by the pool at night. Our room was overlooking the pool and it was quite noisy but didn't last too much past midnight. My only complaint would be that the pool closed early so they could prepare.

We didnt try the bus into town as we had already done all the sights so can't comment on that.

Final verdict, nice but expensive.

  • Liked — Nice big pool area with plenty of sunbeds
  • Disliked — Expensive food

As others have stated the hotel is not ideally central. However, they have a large shuttle bus now that travels fairly frequently in to the centre and it works well. We stayed for 2 nights at the end of July as a family with 2 rooms which were superb. The front desk staff were amongst the best I have come across anywhere in the world. Overall, I would recommend this hotel providing you don't mind being a little out of the centre. You can also catch the metro but think it is a bit of a walk to/from the station. The Metro is really easy to use in Rome - buy your tickets at a newspaper stand near or at the station - a one way ticket costs 1 euro. Good value and efficient. We caught a taxi from St Peter's Square back to the hotel (the hotel shuttle bus doesn't go there - it goes past it but doesn't drop off) on one occasion and it cost about 13 euros - to give you an idea.

The hotel was let down by their restaurant. We had lunch on arrival. Service was slow. There is one guy who swans around as if he owns the place (maybe he does!) He fronts it but that's the extent of his role. Then there was another guy behing a podium at the entrance. He didn't seem to do much either. Another supervisor type seemed to be adding the same amount of value and then there were the waitresses doing all the work - not many of them either. A waitress with an Italian/USA accent rescued the waitressing situation and seemed to be carrying the whole place - until she went off shift! The front man, podium man and superviser type could improve the efficiency of this restaurant no end if they would only work flexibly! The food was okay and not too expensive given the class of the hotel.

But, don't let this put you off. There are 3 restaurants close by and they are much cheaper than those you find in the centre of the city. There is one right next door to the hotel - down the drive turn right. Others have commented how good this is. However, the owner sadly died the day before we arrived so it was closed while we were there. There are 2 other restaurants also close by but about a 5-8 minute walk. They are Birbante - turn left out of the hotel and walk along to the junction about 500 metres away and turn left. It is then in front of you on the right. The pavement towards the junction is narrow (single file only) so be careful and especially when crossing the road to the restaurant. The hotel will book you a table. Others have commented here with not very favourable remarks but we thought it was okay. A third one just a bit further on is the Giardino D'Abruzzo. Hotel will also book you a table here. This seemed to be full of locals. Service was a bit slow but it was okay too. So, you have a choice of 3 restaurants within easy reach - but don't get stressed out by the service - you have to get used to it in Italy in most places.

The hotel has a great outdoor pool too. We would definitely stay there again.

We arrived after paying the driver of the Mercedes cab €60 this was the cost from the Champion airport to the hotel, email the hotel and they can pre-book it for you.
Before booking i used the special request via alpharooms and asked for a quiet room and NOT to have an adjoining room.
Went to our room which was the second one next to the elevator, facing the pool and guess what an adjoining room.
We swiftly got moved to the front of the hotel which was quite and had a larger room.
The room was 424.
The rooms are fine nothing amazing the beds are very comfy for Italy and we were happy and therefore settled in.
We were annoyed to find that after 9pm the buffet bar was closed and in order for me to get a beef burger we had no other choice but to order room service.
This is mad room service Coke is €6.50 and the mini bar its €5 and in the landing it is €2 if you really are rich enough to pay that extra €4.50 euro for someone to chap your door and hand it to you i guess you should be thinking charity.
Well the coke machine swallowed my token i had to get from the cashiers desk so i had to get a new one from them, they said if it has red lights on next to your choice it means its empty, so does that mean it its empty half the time.
On our second night we had to order room service again and ordered The large mixed meat dish at €25 they said it would come in 20mins after several calls it came in 1hour and 10minutes time.
It was cold so i sent it back and got a new one, now please don’t think what i am about to say is exaggerated never in my life have i had a meal drenched in so much oil it was rotten, you know what i left 70% of it in the hall it was rotten.
I have to say though the burgers are really nice so 10/10.
Anyway check your bill as they charged us twice for a meal we already paid for in cash to the room service man.
Internet is €5 for hour and it cant be used again so if you check an email its costing you €5.
Staff unfortunately are not the most friendliest people in the world not as friendly as us Scots, it seems if you ask one question you get a smile ask two you get a frown, i didn’t dare ask a third.
Getting to the shopping area is very easy you walk straight out the hotel turn right get the No:889 bus to the Corlinnia tube station and then the tube to Spagna thats where Gucci, Replay and all the other big shops are.
The little Restaurant everyone talks about on the right hand side was closed so if you take a left and at the top of the hill there is a find Italian restaurant there full of locals.

The SPA Its FREE its lovely, now out of all the hotels in the world and in the UK i have been all over i have never been told to wear a see through cap on my head when in the swimming pool and Jacuzzi i was told to wear this, my hair is about 1cm long a crew cut my hairs on my arms, legs, chest are long and i get told to wear a cap, What is the matter with you Crowne Plaza Rome?

So in all Okay hotel, good pool, boring lobby bad for snacks you have no choice but to go to there fancy restaurant so be warned French fries in the room are €9.

I hope this has been helpful to you

We stayed in this hotel for 4 nights last week. I found it to be above my expectations. The rooms were large and had been recently refurbished with free water and small chocolates each day plus clean towels and shampoo etc... They also have a complementary safe and fridge which does have the usual contents for a mini bar but they could be removed overnight to keep water cool for use the next day.

The pool was great and with towels supplied by the hotel although these had to be obtained from the life guard as room towels were not allowed. The pool bar was also good for lunch time snacks however the prices were a bit expensive especially for drinks.

Breakfast was very good i would recommend to save money only getting the 9 euro one as it includes everything but the eggs, bacon and sausages (hot food).

Staff at the hotel were friendly, informative and spoke good english. When we arrived they explained the bus services and where to get the metro to the town if we did not want to use the complementary shuttle. The metro and bus tickets are only 1 euro for 75 minutes of travel including one metro journey which is an inexpensive way to get around Rome and the bus stop was right outside the hotel.

If you did not want to eat in the hotel or travel all the way out to the centre of Rome there is a place just outside the hotel which serves good food at reasonable prices it may seem a little quiet until about 7.30 ish so unless you want to be one of the only two tables it is better to wait a bit.

I would recommend this hotel to anyone who would like a break away but maybe not sightseeing all holiday as it may be better to stay somewhere a bit closer.
