“Great Location”
Reviewed 15 May 2012

This hotel is a 5 minute walk to Central Stazione. The location is great. The restaurants around the area are very good. The hotel is a bit old and looks a bit run down, but it has all the facilities and our stay Hotel Selene was very comfortable. We could walk to all the main attractions, Colosseum and Vatican and it was close to the main shopping streets as well. The reception area seems a bit removed from the hotel, as it's next door to the main hotel, the rooms are a bit dark, but the service, location and facilities of this hotel cannot be faulted.

Stayed at Hotel Selene with my parents in April, 2012. Picked it because of location, reviews here on Trip Advisor, and price.

It was a quick walk from the train station and not a problem with our bags. The staff was friendly, especially the gentleman working when we initially checked in. He allowed me to practice my broken Italian and then clarified everything in English that I was unsure of.

The check-in desk is next to the hallway leading to the rooms. The building appears to be shared by 2 or 3 other hotels. The exterior hallway of this main building is in need of some repair. There is a small elevator to use as well. We stayed on the 3rd floor. The room was clean, but not overly warm and cozy. The bathroom was big by European standards, though the corner shower was teeny tiny! The room was air conditioned and worked well.

Breakfast was included and it had a variety of options, though mostly typical Italian in nature.

I would stay here again. It was clean and I felt safe staying there. Is the most luxurious place I've stayed? Not by a mile, but when you're traveling, you're not spending that much time in the room anyways.

Dear carzim59,

I am very glad to know that you have spent a good time at Selene.

Thanks a lot for all your kind words of appreciation.
Just wanted to point that the refurbishing works of the common areas are already started and will take place all through summertime. We are very confindent that this is not going to affect our guests' stay anyway.

Thank you very much for your feedback.

Looking forward to your next stay,

Kind regards,

Right near the centre of Rome. Large room with nice bathroom. Only downside was that it smelled slightly of cigarette smoke. Continental breakfast was awesome and staff helpful. Stayed January 2011.

Excellent value, centrally-based hotel within walking distance of metro and buses. Good breakfast choice, no evening meal but several restaurants nearbye. Don't go to the one they recommend, expensive. Recommend you seek out Est! Est! Est! in a side street close bye, friendly family-run piazzeria with good food at a reasonable price.
A couple of drawbacks - no tea-making facilities in room and with tea at 3 or 4 euros a cup you would be advised to pack a travel kettle and some teabags! Also massive tv but every channel in Italian.

Dear catrina s,

we are very glad to know you have spent a good time at Selene! Thanks for your words of appreciation and for your suggestions, we will take care of them.

Let me answer your quotes in details:

- A couple of drawbacks - no tea-making facilities in room and with tea at 3 or 4 euros a cup you would be advised to pack a travel kettle and some teabags!

Right! Having a tea, or boiled water in hotel rooms is not very usual in italian hotels.... I think it's a cultural issue :-) Personally, I love having a herb tea or camomille before sleep, and trust me, it's something that we have already planned to feature in our next "hotel upgrade".
Anyway, if you ask our desk we are able to provide a cup of tea during the afternoon/evening and pricing is no way 4 euro a cup! :-)
On the other hand I must say that nowhere is stated that we have "facilities for tea/coffe in room".

- Also massive tv but every channel in Italian.

Our Tv has got hundreds of channels... intrernational channels start around ch. number 6-700 - not a massive list indeed, but we have major english, spanish, german and french channels!

- no evening meal but several restaurants nearbye. Don't go to the one they recommend, expensive.

Sorry to hear about that. Honestly, for Rome standards I don't think you might call our restaurant Cotto "expensive" - mainly because their quality is over the average and the bill is on the right track. Moreover, we have just revamped our collaboration and now our guests have a 20% discount on their bill (just tell the waiter when you arrive that you're located at Selene!).
I wish you to give Cotto one more chance next time!

Looking forward to your next stay!
Kind regards,

Lorenzo Macinanti

It's so lovely when the advertising matches upto your expectation of a place.
It really is only a few minutes walk from the Termini station (which is the main & largest train station) travelling light with wheeled bags helps the trek to the hotel over the cobblestone pavements)
It's so central, the Republica metro is only a 3min walk away from the hotel & from there ALL the tourist sites are just a ride away.
The hotel itself is comfortable, clean & spacious. After hearing all the horrors of how small european accomodations are, my cousins & I were thrilled with the room we got. Even with 3 relatively well sized suitcases we were comfortable with space to move around.
The staff are excelent. Very obliging & helpful. Francesco at the reception gave some great advice that only a local could give & was always courteous & friendly.
Thanks TripAdvisor for helping me find it & the wonderful work you do for travellers. Greatly appreciated!!

This is an ideal location for exploring Rome. It's just a short walk down the street to the large square (Piazza dei Cinquecento) where hop on-hop off buses pull in, and the Rome railway station is located (Roma Termini). Fabulous! Lots of restaurants within easy walking distance, too. The hotel itself is probably a little dated but this didn't deter from our enjoyment. The photos on the websites show a much more luxurious place than what we actually stayed in, so they're either old pics or they've renovated since our trip. We had a family room which was quite large enough for the four of us without bumping elbows. Even so, the beds were comfortable and the staff were exceptionally helpful and friendly. Simoné and Lorenzo in the front office recommended restaurants and provided maps and other assitance. A buffet breakfast in the quaint communal dining room was included in our price which was a great start to the day's activities. We would definitely stay here again.

Dear LeTourer,

I am happy you had fun on your stay in Rome!
I agree with you about the perfect position of our hotel...
About our rooms: yes, we have upgraded some rooms in the meantime and have started a new Hotel - named "Dharma" - which is our twin hotel and is basically a boutique hotel... Corridors and stairways are under refurbishing too and they will likely be polished and renewed in few months!

See you next time!

Me and my wife just spent a week in Rome and stayed in Hotel Selene. We found the location ideal to explore the eternal city and some surrounding towns (we went to Frascati, Castel Gandolfo & Tivoli) since it is a short walk away from 'Termini', a train, metro and bus station. Also close by are shopping areas such as the cute Monti area and the slightly more 'mainstream' via Nazionale. Also reachable by foot, albeit further than the station, are landmarks such as the Colosseum, Spanish steps and Trevi fountain. Other lovely areas such as Piazza Navona, Campo dei Fiori and the Vatican can be easily be reached by a 10-15 mins bus ride.

As for the hotel itself, I agree with most of the points highlighted in other reviews - courteous & helpful staff, varied buffet breakfast (great way to start the day!), clean rooms & bathrooms, TV, safe and free wifi. As pointed out in at least another review, the rooms may appear to be rather drab to those of us not yet attuned to the Roman baroque style! Style apart, the common area of the building calls for some polishing up, though. Implementing other ideas floated around such as a hot water dispenser would be nice too - but all in all it was a pleasant stay and we enjoyed it a lot.

Dear Karl T,

thanks for your feedback and for having a good time at Selene!

Let me answer your suggestions:

1) We are considering one good solution for "hot drinkable water" (we used to have it until last year but it was removed), so I guess we will find a new option soon!

2) Refurbishing and polishing works of stairways and common areas are already started and in some weeks the late nineteenth century building interiors will be restored to its former splendour....

Thanks again for sharing your thoughts and having a great time in Rome!

See you next time!
