“Good location - Clean rooms - Good breakfast”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 25 June 2014

The hotel in the center of Rome is less than 10 min walk from central train station Roma Termini. Thus it is certainly a good choice when you arrive from one of Rome's airport and take the airport bus shuttle (or train) to Rome, since these lines end at Roma Termini. Most points of interest are within walking distance (Trevi Fountain, Spanish Steps, etc). If you do'n't like or cannot take the long walk to the Vatican a good alternative is to take the metro from Roma Termini or Opera metro station. Opposite the hotel there is a bar with terrace where you can drink a good beer for a relatively (!) cheap price. There are many good restaurants and pizzerias in the neighborhood. Via Nazionale is a shopping street that is only a few hundred meters from the hotel. The hotel itself has clean rooms and are quite appropriate considering that you are not visiting Rome to spend a great deal of your time in your hotel room. What was special appealing for us was that the hotel serves a good buffet breakfast with bread, cheeese, ham, (boiled) eggs, cerials, yoghurt, fruit, etc. This in contrast to many hotels in Italy that serve only a light brreakfast with some sweet cakes etc. Thus your day exploring Rome can start with a filled stomach. Furthermore, the service in the hotel is excellent. The personnel is very attent to help you with every request.

We stayed in this hotel with my best friend in standard room. The room itself was suitable and clean what is really important at least for us.However there were a few drawbacks. Firstly the walls of the room were so thin that you can hear your neighbors sneezing or chating. Secondly, the pillows were so firm that we couldn't fall asleep at least for the first night. Then talking about the hotel, we found breakfast was not for our taste and we were disappointed that they didn't have normal orange juice. Staff was quite ok. Location is really perfect. You just need my 10 minutes to reach Coliseum and metro is really close. Overall, if you don't need luxury, amazing few from the windows or very delicious and various food this hotel is just for you.

Room Tip: I think pretty much all the rooms are the same.

This hotel has a good location ( an easy walk from the train station), and it was clean and comfortable with a nice modern bathroom. It is close to a Metro Station with lots of restaurants close by. The included breakfast was a very nice buffet with a good selection. The hotel had a good sized lift and the staff were friendly and helpful. The only negative was the internet service which was very intermittent.

We stayed at the hotel Sonya in late April. Our room was very clean and comfortable, and spacious by Italian hotel standards. They served a good variety of items at breakfast. Staff was courteous and helpful. The location is very convenient - just a few blocks from the Termini station, and there are good restaurants nearby. Even in busy Rome, we were not bothered by noise from the street.

Room Tip: Rooms on the upper floors are probably a little quieter. There is a lift (but the stairs are good e...

Wish we could have written a proper review, but despite having made our res.'n months ago, and reconfirming it before we left home, when we arrived we were told they were overbooked by 4 rooms. We were too tired to argue after traveling overnight from Canada , and were moved by taxi to a charmless coachtour-type hotel on the wrong side of the Termini station. So much for the easy walk to the Trevi fountain that we were hoping to do that afternoon.
From reading some other reviews, this seems to be a fairly common practice - maybe they give preference to Rick Steve's tour guests?- so we would not risk making a reservation here again and ending up in a totally different place.

Our family of 5 stayed here for 4 nights in May of 2014. We were very happy! It was quiet, cool, and a welcoming refuge from the craziness of the city.

One of the challenges of traveling with 3 children is that it's hard to find hotels that can put you all in one room, and hard to arrange (and afford) separate rooms right next to each other. Hotel Sonya was able to fit us all in one room... one double bed and three reasonably comfortable fold-aways. It was a tight fit, but it worked. The room was simple but clean and blessedly air-conditioned, with a wardrobe and a desk and a small refrigerator. The bathroom was roomy, with modern fixtures and a great shower (no tub) and a hair dryer. And a bidet :) The window had shutters that let in air but not eyes when window was opened, and could also be closed light-tight for closed-window sleeping. With the window closed the room was wonderfully quiet, with no problems with noise from other rooms.

Wifi was free (yay!), though the first night we didn't get good reception inside the room. Subsequent nights it worked just fine. There were also laptops in the lobby for customer use, though we never availed ourselves of them.

Location was good. It was a 6-block walk to the Termini train station... a little further than my ideal, but worked well enough, and once we were at Termini we could get anywhere we needed. There were restaurants and convenience shops and an ATM nearby, and a laundromat only half a block away. No particularly stellar views of anything. We were on the 5th floor, with the window looking out onto a side street... elevator was old-fashioned but functioned well and was roomier than most we've encountered in Europe. Small lobby (no lounge space) but two decent-sized breakfast rooms.

The hotel staff was wonderful. They stored our bags, gave us a map, arranged our airport transport for the trip home and helped us with our various questions. They were particularly sweet to the kids, putting candy and fruit in their hands whenever we passed through. The serving staff for breakfast were always cheerful and attentive. Breakfast itself was not our favorite, but it was perfectly adequate... eggs and cheese and cold-cuts and fruit and yogurt and varying kinds of breads and pastries.

It's not a fancy luxury hotel, but it met our needs quite nicely. Would recommend it to others, particularly families.

Hotel Sonya is in a quiet area, but close to the central train station, hop on hop off stops, and a quick walk to most attractions in Rome. The rooms were clean, and breakfast was very substantial. Would stay again, and would definitely recommend.
