“Great hotel!”
Reviewed 15 September 2013

This hotel is situated in a great location, right in the center, with walking distance to attractions. The staff at the front desk was very friendly and helpful. The rooms are very small but it is good for the price.

We had prepaid two rooms for three nights at San Silvestro. Upon arrival we were told that only one room was available but for the second room we would have to go for one night to the Doge hotel. We were actually in a hurry as we had a prepaid tour to go to that afternoon, yet we had to look for and drag the luggage to the Doge hotel ourselves as no transportation or any help was offered to us. After about 15 minutes of walking uphill we found a building with a small sign “Hotel Doge 2 star 4th floor”. There was no elevator on the ground floor. After having to drag heavy luggage up one full flight of stairs we saw a tiny door with no sign which turned out to be the elevator of size about 3’ by 2’. There was no reception for Doge hotel on the 4th floor. A cleaning lady told us we need to go and check in at another hotel that was located on the ground floor.
When I complained to San Silvestro manager about the substitution with a two star hotel, he rolled his eyes and waived at me with his hands telling me that what we paid for was actually a one star hotel. He then told me not to speak with him about this issue anymore. No apology or compensation was offered. I asked the manager to arrange for help with luggage to transfer the second person back for next morning and he promised to do so, but he did not follow through on this promise. After I asked him next morning if he sent someone over to help with the luggage he acted surprised. I then asked that he finds help for the luggage, immediately. By the time the buzz boy had shown up it was already too late as we had another prepaid tour to go to in the morning so we could not wait any longer. Aside from the inconvenience of the pre paid room not being available and the extremely inconsiderate and rude manager the hotel is very worn out. Hallway carpets are filthy. The first room that we got was a broom closet on the floor below. One could only move sideways between the bed and the wall. Shower had no shower head, the drain was clogged, and caulking was missing in the shower so the water was gushing all over the bathroom floor. I could turn the shower on for less than a minute at a time so that the water would not run on the floor through the missing caulking. Pictures attached. AC cannot be turned on or off or even adjusted from the room as it is fully is controlled by the reception desk. Internet has to be purchased separately. The remaining staff were nice and apologetic. Overall I would not recommend staying at this one star (as per the hotel manager) hotel.

Room Tip: Do not stay at this hotel. Look for something else in the area as it can not be worse than this one.

The hotel is very centrally located. An easy 2-20 minute walk to most of the sights, but there are others nearby that can claim the same thing. The day-clerk at the desk is very unhelpful and unfriendly. He seems inconvenienced by every simple request, including adjustment of our room's climate controls (which are handled 100% from front desk - you have no control over them at all).
The room was made up daily and was cleaned, but there is mould growing in the shower in several places. The showers have to be short as the water doesn't drain well and you risk flooding your bathroom.
The beds are like hardwood boards and the pillows are about 2 inches thick they are so old and flat.
Breakfast was as promised, pastry + hot / cold drinks. Simple and decent. However the dining area is extremely small, crowded and loud as a result of the TV cranked up to defcon 7 and playing loud music videos which everyone had to shout over. No en-suite coffee / tea provided.
No free wifi as advertised - actually your first 5 minutes is free as a trial, then it's a pre-paid system. Unacceptable - as we book based on wifi availability. Also the rooms are not smoke-free.
This hotel has potential but there are dozens of little things that add up to an unpleasant stay. Two-star on a good day until they root out some of their issues (new pillows would be a great start, as well as keeping the wifi promise).

Room Tip: Try to choose a room that doesn't face Piazza San Silvestro or Via Gambero, as they late night n...

Although this hotel is dated and a little warn around the edges, it is in a great location. Minutes walk to Spansih steps and the Trevi fountain, plus very close to the metro, you can't go wrong staying here.
We were greeted by a lovely man at reception, who was really helpful in guiding us to the local attractions and recommending great places to eat. He wroks all the time, when we left in the morning he was there and when we woke up he was still there making us a coffee.
It was a little annoying that we had to call reception to adjust our air conditioning. You also have to pay for Wifi, we chose not to take up that option.
Breakfast was good, with fresh espresso made to order. With a location like this you would have to stay here again, I only hope they decide to update the bed covers and maybe move out some of the very "tired" furniture from each room.
There is a lift, which is a bonus, as we were very tired of climbing stairs with our luggage, just a tip, if you dont like lifts then maybe give this one a miss as its tiny.

Warm and friendly hotel absolutely ideal for all the main attractions in Rome staff are very friendly and helpful .The rooms were quite small but cleaned daily and comfortable. The furniture was slightly old and worn. It had oddities like ringing for air con to be turned up and a two person lift. Breakfast was adequate. Lacked tea making facilities. Wifi could be bought for 5 euro for 3 hours but not continuous use.

The Hotel San Silvestro is a small, well kept, reasonably priced and very clean hotel located in the heart of Rome. A very short walk gets you to Trevi Fountain, the Spanish Steps, the Forum and many other famous sites in Rome. The room was a bit small to be accommodation for 3 adults, but was well kept and cleaned and quite comfortable. The staff are tremendously helpful and had good recommendations for near by food. As others have said, the hotel has its quirks and the furniture is a bit old and slightly worn. Nothing that I found distressing, however. Their willingness to help and accommodate each guest individually is truly wonderful.

Don't be fooled by the photos! This is a shabby, tired and very depressing hotel. Granted it is in a very good situation for the main sights. The rooms were clean and the sheets of good quality but the bedspreads , rugs and furniture were more like a 1970s student flat! We were greeted by the Roman version of Basil Fawlty who couldn't even say hello! To be fair he was the only member of staff like this. The breakfast room was rediculously small but the coffee and morning rolls were good. Would not dream of going ther again!
