“Staff, location, service, hotel are all excellent!”
Reviewed 6 September 2013

Spent 10 nights at the Hotel Smeraldo from August to September 2013. The staff could not have been nicer - Walter and Eugenio at the front desk were incredibly helpful, kind, and made us feel like family. In fact, Walter ran down the street to change our 500 euro bill and sent us to his favorite boyhood restaurant. Eugenio sent us to another fabulous restaurant across the street. He walked over and introduced us to the chef personally.

The housekeeping staff was out of this world good. I wish I knew the lady's name with short dark hair who works in the dining room and housekeeping. She was so friendly and helpful.

The location was incredible, walking distance (though possibly sweaty when you get there) to anywhere, or less than a 10 euro taxi ride to almost anywhere you would want to go. The breakfast was basic but good (i.e., yoghurt, cereal, cold cuts, cheese, pastries, rolls, juices, ilk, water, espresso, cappuccino, tea, coffee, etc.). You have to ask for the espresso and cappuccino, but the ladies in the dining room were always happy to get it for you.

The rooms are small, but generous according to European standards. The beds are also what you would expect, as is the AC in the heat of summer. If you are a big person, I would suggest requesting a room with a bathtub. The staff certainly can't accommodate all requests since few rooms have tubs, but they certainly do the best that they can. Most of the rooms on the 4th floor have balconies, so request one of those if you like. Don't worry if you don't get one, because those with balconies (we had one) rarely use them since two rooftop spaces on the 4th and 5th floors are available up until 7:00 pm. Around the corner is a nice grocery store with a pretty good wine selection. We often bought some cheese, proscuitto and wine and enjoyed it on the roof gardens. We ended up not going out on our balcony once.

No matter what, bring ear plugs. The hotel is near Campo d' Fiori, and people in Rome like to party and have a great time. If you read this and decide to come to Rome, then please don't complain to the staff about the noise. They can't change this.

Room Tip: If you're a big person (really big), ask for a room with a bath tub. Bring earplugs. Any outer...

-Location! Right at the center of Rome everything is at a walking distance. Keep in mind that you need to walk to see Rome. Forget about the bus and the metro: so, you need a hotel with a really good location, Smeraldo fits this category perfectly! -Free Wifi, good connection.
-Breakfast could be better with more variety. One type of cheese is not enough for me :/ -Shower rather small

This hotel is close to the main attractions in Rome. Helpful staff. Directly across the street from Smeraldo is an excellent restaurant with more current Italian food, literally 10 steps from their door! Roof top deck closes at 7:00 pm this was a bit of a disappointment. Great breakfast. Easy 10 Euro taxi ride from Trastevere train station if you are coming from Fiumicino Airport.

Spent 3 nights in July. A pleasant, clean, perfectly located hotel for exploring Rome. The A.C. worked wonderfully, in typical hot Roman weather. Helpful staff at the front desk. Modest breakfast buffet in a pleasant basement room. Do not attempt to turn/move/raise your hands while taking a shower - you can't! Rooms do not have a fridge. Rates are reasonable and proper. A short walk to the river, Jewish Ghetto. Very pleasant small roof garden. Would stay there again (for short stay!).

Room Tip: Would suggest a room facing the tiny street in front of the hotel, rather than facing the back. The...

We were in Rome in July 2011. This hotel is very well located close to the Pantheon, Piazza Navona, fontana di Trevi,... you can walk there in 10-15 min. It´s clean and comfortable enough. Personal is kind and nice. We were very likely and would repeat if we could go back to Rome.

My husband, seven year old son, and I stayed at the Smeraldo Hotel for one week in late July. For our preferences, this place was a gem and we will definitely stay there again. However, I can see why it's not for everyone... see below.

How we travel
We like to extend our travel dollars by traveling on the frugal side and staying places for a long time. We are pretty easy going and our child is a great traveler.

What we require is a clean, quiet room in a safe neighborhood with staff who are not going to rob us blind. We don't spend much time in the room and we never touch the TV while traveling so our needs are basic. Most of our trips are not "vacations" where we go to get pampered and rest. We like to call ourselves travelers -- that is, we go someplace and want to immerse ourselves in that culture. So we do whatever is customary in that country.

The Rooms
The Smeraldo is located about 300 yards from the Campo di Fiori in a small street across from a restaurant. The rooms are very small by US standards but they are just fine. We requested a triple with a balcony but were told none were available. We got room 108 which is facing the street. Even with double paned windows, outside sounds could still be heard. But that was nothing compared to the group of teenage American girls staying all around us. We could hear nothing when they were in their rooms but they would hang out in the hallway and that was super loud. After two nights, we moved to the room 406 which was more recently remodeled and super quiet but a lot smaller. Also, room 406 had a refrigerator while 108 did not. Neither of the rooms smelled like cigarette smoke. The rooms were cleaned well and we never saw a bug. The A/C was great.

The beds are firm, which I like. The mattress in room 108 needed replacing as I could feel some of the springs. However, I slept like a baby after walking all day.

The bathroom was very small but had everything we needed, although they could get extra space by getting rid of their bidets.

The Breakfast
The breakfast was good, not awesome, but just right to get us going. They serve coffee, tea, yogurt, bread, cereal, milk (hot and cold), some cold cuts, and pastries. There is no fresh fruit but they have canned peaches and pears and some maybe preserved prunes which were actually somewhat welcome. You can ask for a capuccino from the server. There are no eggs either but that did not bother us.

The Terraces
There are two terraces accessible to guests. The one on the 5th floor closes as 7PM but the one on the 4th floor never closes. We often grabbed a bottle of champagne and some fruit from the market just a few blocks away and had an afternoon after-touring snack before dinner.

The Staff
The staff were efficient and nice. These are busy working people and we did not bother them with trivial issues. They offered to print our train tickets to Napoli and ordered a taxi for our early flight back to the US. I have no complaints about anyone on the staff. I'm sure if you're rude to them the won't be very nice in return. You have to remember, this is Europe and there are courtesies that are expected there -- we always said hello and thank you and I tried to speak Italian in some weird Spanish - Italian concoction that really seemed appreciated. BTW, everyone speaks perfect English at the front desk.

Location
This is the main reason to stay here. We walked everywhere. The only time we did not walk was to Termini to catch a train to Napoli for our day trip to Pompeii and to return to the hotel. The location cannot be oversold! At night, we would walk around Plaza Navona and Campo di Fiori and eat, people watch, and try to become part of the wonderful, if touristy, scene. Of course, as we had our son with us, we made it home by midnight every night and it was great to have 24 hour front desk just in case.

Don't Stay Here
1. If you want to stay in an American - type hotel
2. If you want to be pampered
3. If you need a lot of room
4. If you really don't want to go to Italy but your S.O. is making you because it will be romantic.
5. If you are in Rome to see the sights but not to absorb the atmosphere.

Extras
The bakery around the corner is great for a quick lunch. The restaurant across the street was fine.

Enjoy your trip.

Room Tip: Stay high up in a room not facing the street, if you want quiet.

My wife and I have stayed at this hotel twice in the last 4 years (2010, 2013) and this is the first and only place I would look to book if I were going to be in Rome. Our room in the Dependance was really comfortable, spacious and the A/C and lift worked great - these are the things I value on a trip to Rome in summer. In my opinion, this hotel is in the best location in Rome (near Campo di Fiore) as it is a 3 minute walk from where the #8 tram drops you off and you can literally walk to every major place you'd like to go if you've got good shoes. About a 30 minute walk to Vatican, 20 minutes to Colosseum, 10 minutes to wedding cake, Forum, Piazza Navona,Pantheon, and a main bus stop/taxi areas from which you can get everywhere. Book this place if you can, you won't be disappointed with this hotel. Just make sure you visit Roscioli Forno (the shop right next door to Dependance entrance) for what might be some of the best pizza in all of italy.

Room Tip: Don't be put off by reviews that reference being "put" the Dependance. It is literally...
