“Very Convenient Location”

The staff at this hotel were fantastic! Massimo was soured helpful, but all the staff at the front desk were very nice, friendly and helpful. They also speak English. They call you a cab whenever you need to go anywhere. The location is great - central to a lot of the sights and surrounded by many restaurants and shops. Also was a safe location. The room was pretty small, but that is the case all over Italy.

We picked this hotel for it's location and price. We found the staff at the desk to be very helpful. They printed our reservation for the Vatican museum after we had booked it online. We used public transportation and they were helpful with bus stops, maps and schedules. We used the rooftop terrace several times. It was very comfortable in late September. Our room was small but clean and comfortable. It overlooked the street (restaurant below) but that wasn't a problem as we usually had the windows closed. We walked to the Pantheon, Spanish Steps, Trevi Fountain, Coliseum, but took a bus to St Peter's Square. Breakfast was good. Lots to see in Rome and Smeraldo Hotel was a convenient great place to stay.

Room Tip: Not familiar with what other rooms were like. Ours was small but fine.

I picked this hotel based on other TA reviews. The location was fine, a long distance by foot to the Vatican and colosseum, very close to campo de fiori. Our room was small and very clean. The bed was very firm and comfortable. While ridiculously small, the shower worked well. There was some mildew in the shower that could be cleaned with my fingernail, so should have been taken care of by cleaning staff. Lots of nice towels in the bathroom and toiletries. Our room faced the street and was stifling hot when we checked in, even though the heat was not on in our room. We opened the large windows to cool it down, but the street noise was soooo loud, we could not sleep with them open. I slept with earplugs, something I never do. The midday staff was extremely friendly and helpful, directing us where to safely store our luggage and going over a map of the city with us. We did not know there was a rooftop where we could hang out and we left too early in the morning for breakfast. The front desk arranged a driver to pick us up for the airport, pricey, but fast-30 minutes. If they call a taxi to pick you up, there is a service charge. You can walk to largo Argentina to get a taxi for less. The night and early am staff were not as charming as the midday staff. Overall, I think I would look for another hotel in Rome as this one did not stand out in any way except for the price which was reasonable.

This 50-room hotel is off-the-beaten trail mid-way between Campo de' Fiori and Largo Argentina. My wife and I paid 150 Euros per night for three nights in September 2013. The room and bathrooms were small but nice (a step up from clean and safe). A window opened up to an interior courtyard. The hotel staff was pleasant and more responsive than most Italian hotels (as opposed to owner-occupied B&Bs). A full breakfast in the basement is included. We were especially pleased with the location, which is only a few blocks and across the Corso Vittoro Emmanuel II from the Piazza Navona. We walked everywhere in the city -- including the Vatican and Borghese Gallery, which admittedly were hikes but doable with young legs. We stayed in a more highly-rated hotel by Parliament the previous year that was nearly twice as much. Although it was more central, I liked the Smaraldo neighborhood more, especially at night, which is just a safe but seems younger and more vibrant. The rate was very reasonable, but we experienced a glitch in the on-line reservations, which originally gave us a super low-rate of less than 120 Euro, but mistook us for one-person rather than two (it logged both names but somehow as a single) -- something that wasn't caught until a sent a confirmation email a week before leaving home. I talked them down a few Euros (above typical discounts), but the room was merely a good rather than great deal. Definitely remember to send a confirmation email before arriving!

This was our third, and final, stay at Smeraldo in Rome. We originally chose it based on the recommendation of a friend and its absolutely fabulous location (near all the things we love in Rome). However, this was the stay that broke the camel's back.

Smeraldo's service is, at least in our experience, very unwelcoming and unfriendly. The hotel staff do not greet you each day - in fact, you have to actually say "buon giorno" to them, and may or may not get a reply. I used to put it down to the Italian way. Maybe I am getting old, but I want more. I want them to check in their database to see that we have stayed there before and welcome us back.

This particular trip, we had rented three rooms, as we had family travelling with us. We chose the room that had an interior view (to the next building) so that others could have the views onto the streets. It was quite warm in Rome during our stay (approx. 21-23 degrees Celsius during the day). While it cooled down at night, it did not do so in our room. With air conditioning, we could keep it comfortable. However, one day we came home and it had to have been 30 degrees in our room - we went to the front desk and were told that the AC had been turned off that day. We asked that it be turned on, and were told the owner had ordered it turned off and there was nothing to be done. We asked that it be turned on, and those who needed it could have it on. Much, and increasingly heated back and forth took place. We asked to speak to the owner - surprise, surprise, he was not available. We asked to be moved to another room. We were told there were no other rooms and were given a very small fan to put in the window. More back and forth. Finally, there was a room for us with an exterior window. All was well. Until....

The bathrooms filled with the stench of sewer gas (our guests admitted they had had it the whole time). It was disgusting. We had it really badly one night in our new room, and complained. It moderated somewhat, but I was disgusted. Our second last day, we came home to water all over the bathroom floor - something was leaking. We advised the front desk, but nothing was done.

I understand that Rome is a very old city and that the buildings are old and sometimes things happen. However, in most hotels, you make mention of it and it is dealt with without having to resort to heated conversations.

Smeraldo is a very clean and well-priced hotel for the centro storico in Rome. However, I have to admit that you get what you pay for. We are going to have to find a new hotel, and this makes me sad, as Smeraldo was our first hotel in Rome. I had a real soft spot for it (my husband has no idea why, but he humours me). Normally, when we vacation, we stay in very nice hotels, but in Rome, I always stood by Smeraldo.

If you stay at Smeraldo, go in knowing what you are getting for the price - a clean room, and that's about it.

Dear Lepa,

me and all the staff of the Hotel is very sorry to read what you wrote about your stay.
Our daily commitment is to make our guests the most happy as possible and every day we receive important feedbacks (also as you can read from others reviews) that confirm this.

It is so strange that you felt unwelcomed (our staff is always mentioned fro our guests for it's kindness) but it is important for us to know that because it is in any case an incentive to improve us.
Of course we would be grateful if you would reconsider your stay and come back to the Hotel as you've done during your past trip.

Regarding the AC unfortunately we cannot totally control the system because the regolamentation of the ancient city center of the city of Rome forces all the big systems to turn off the cold air after a certain date: we want to let you know that we made our best (in our possibilities) to find a solution for you but i that case we had partially our hands tied.

If you would like to give us another chance we would be gratefull, if not thank you however for your feedback.

All the best

The reception & staff is so welcoming! They made our dinner reservations both nights and we had amazing dining experiences thanks to them! The location is convenient and the staff also called taxis for us whenever we needed. The rooms are great (bathrooms are small but sufficient). Breakfast was great too! I do wish they had showed us to the rooftop terrace because that was one of the reasons we booked the hotel.

This was our second time staying at the Smeraldo. The room was small but had a terrace and was well maintained. Staff were friendly and very helpful. The rooftop terrace was a great place to spend time in the evening. Nice variety of food for breakfast although the coffee was very weak - some espresso would have been appreciated. Based on the price, friendliness of staff and location I would recommend staying here.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a terrace.
