“We stayed here even though we didn't want to !”
Reviewed 18 March 2013

I booked Hotel Esquilino in central Rome through HotelPronto (via Trivago) on 14/02/13 and severely let down by HotelPronto which also operates under the names “Eclusively Hotels” and “TotalStay”.

We arrived at the hotel 23.30 to find it boarded up for renovation; I called HotelPronto to be told a room had been reserved for us at Hotel Giotto. It was 40 minutes away and we had to pay a 20 euro taxi fare to get there !

HotelPronto told us they’d emailed to tell us about the change; however, when we got to the Hotel Giotto, they said they didn’t have a room…the error was due to HotelPronto sending the booking request to the wrong email address and assuming the room was booked !

It is now 00.20 and we are standing in a hotel reception without a room. I protested to HotelPronto that I didn’t want to be at this hotel but wanted to be in central Rome…they said there were no rooms available.

However, when we were in central Rome we had to ask for help from another hotel…they had rooms available so HotelPronto were obviously not telling the truth !

So it’s now 00.45, the receptionist did his very best to sort the problem (even though it wasn’t his error) and all that HotelPronto did was make the situation worse as they couldn’t find a suitable card to make the payment !

At no point, did Hotel Pronto make any offer to pay for food or drink despite them knowing that we had not eaten for many hours;

Eventually, at 01.45, we left Hotel Giotto to walk a further 15 minutes to the Hotel Beethoven, with our suitcases, along a main road, through a very run down, dirty and noisy suburb of Rome.

On top of that, we were told that we would have to take the money to pay the hotel for the room…talk about DIY ! I told HotelPronto to keep us updated the following day.

We passed a group of youths gathered outside a bar; as we approached, with our cases, their conversation stopped and they all turned to look at us as if viewing their prey. I did not feel safe.

When we got to our room at the Hotel Beethoven, we were told there was no water so, having travelled for many hours, we couldn’t have a shower…even a wash or even flush the toilet !

We went to bed at 3.30am, tired, dirty and hungry...not a very good state of affairs having booked a hotel with Hotel Pronto !

The next day, there was no contact from HotelPronto, instead, the receptionist told us that we couldn’t stay at the Hotel Beethoven anymore and would have to go back to the Hotel Giotto !

So, off we walked (again !) to the Hotel Giotto but when we got there, the room wasn’t available so we still couldn’t have a wash or shower.

When we did get into the room, it was small, although clean but located right opposite a late bar which was not good and was the icing on the cake !

To get into Rome, we had to walk 15 minutes (along a busy and dangerous main road) to get to the Metro and then there was a 20 minute journey.

HotelPronto say (in the very small print of their terms and conditions) that all complaints must be registered within 7 days of getting home. I did this and afforded them a 7 day period to reply; to date, they have not bothered to reply save to acknowledge receipt of my complaint.

I have also made Trivago aware of how one of their “partners” is behaving and they have asked me to keep them updated.

I would recommend you don’t book through HotelPronto…it’s a joke and it ruined our stay in Rome.

We stayed here as part of a Topdeck Tour with 40+ people.

You walk into lobby of this hotel and for a moment you are wowed - it looks really nice and there is even free and fast wi-fi. It all goes down hill from there!

On arrival to the hotel we were told that some rooms were not quite ready but we could leave our bags in our rooms and they maids would just clean around them. Well that didn't happen. We got to the room, the hotel cleaner couldn't speak English and she was speaking all kinds of Italian to us. We left our bags in another couples room and were told that the room would be ready for us upon return that night.

We returned to the hotel that night and our room was still not made. It was really disappointing! The room that we were meant to stay in was huge - three beds, large bathroom, etc. After notifying reception we were given another room, three levels down. It just got worse from here!

The second room we were given was very tiny, every time you moved on the bed it would squeak and the bed was squashed up against a wall. The shower had a scabby curtain around it and as soon as your turned the shower on, water sprayed all through the bathroom. We had to remove the filter on the drain as the water kept over flowing.

Breakfast was very ordinary.

We didn't try out the bar, but apparently other couples did and in order to buy a drink, you had to spend over a certain amount and they only accepted cash. So with a large group, it just became impossible.

There is no local eateries around either. The best chance you have of finding food is in Rome itself, which is a short train ride and then bus (or walk) back to the hotel.

If it wasn't for us being on tour, we would not have chosen to stay at this place!

Tips:
1. There is only two small elevators, so if you're on tour and are not one of the first few people to be called for your room keys, expect to use the stairs and expect to walk 3-4 flights of them. You will soon become very fit once you've done this multiple times.

Don't even try and wait for the elevators once you're up. It's so much faster and easier to walk the stairs.

2. The free wi-fi is great and fast. It even reaches to your rooms!

We stayed here for two night as part of a tour group of 20-somethings.
The lobby area is lovely, almost deceptively so. The hallways and stairwells are desperately in need of refurbishment. There are some truly horrifying stains in the carpets.
Our room was a decent size, with a balcony and big windows. The shower had good water pressure and was hot, but the stall was quite mouldy throughout.
The beds were hard and squeaky, but clean.
There is little noiseproofing in this hotel. We were woken at 2am by people talking in the hall outside our room.
It's a train and bus ride from the city (though you could walk instead of taking the bus, it's not excessively far). There is a very limited selection of restaurants around the hotel, and the hotel restaurant does not serve dinner (despite what is printed in the in-room info book).
Free wifi throughout the hotel is a real plus.
Breakfast had plenty of options, though it was all rather underwhelming in the end. Wet scrambled eggs and very greasy bacon, a big selection of slightly stale buns, cheese and meat.
We would probably stay closer to the city next time.

This hotel has a beautiful foyer, bar & restaurant. The rooms are also well appointed & clean, however a little on the small side. Breakfast in the restaurant was lovely.

This hotel is located a bus and metro ride away from Rome. We shared a cab home from the city with another couple in the evening which was a far better option than public transport.

My advise would be to eat your evening in Rome as the hotels restaurant does not open for dinner & your options near by are limited.

Stayed here twice with a tour group. The only thing nice about this hotel is the lobby! Rooms are abit outdated. First room was a decent size with small balcony but the bed was against the wall. Second time the room was so tiny but the balcony was like 7 times the size of our room. It was pretty pointless as there are no views.

Breakfast was standard nothing special.

If you wanted to watch tv, you'll need to ask receptionist for a remote control

The worst thing about this hotel is the location, you will need to catch a train to Cornelia (2nd last on the A line) and catch a 10 minute bus to the hotel.

Nothing is good about this place. The location is about 30 minute walk to nearest train station. The area is run down and would not be safe to walk at night. The hotel itself if in need of desperate repairs and maintenance to both the inside and outside. We stayed here as part of a Topdeck Tour. Carpets stained and dirty throughout hotel. Air conditioner the noisiest you’ve ever heard. Toilet roll holder missing rod to hold toilet roll. Shower head broken. Shower door not work. Dust throughout room. No TV remote. Breakfast and dinner horrible. Other people’s rooms on tour just as bad. I can not think of anything good about this place other than the feeling when we got on the bus and left.

Room Tip: Do not stay here. Try somewhere else.

Spent a night here as part of a tour... Well that was an eye opener, this hotel is pretty much in the slums of Rome and is old, run down, dirty and over priced. Room included breakfast, ham and cheese on bread! Avoid this one if possible...
