“Hidden gem”
Reviewed 5 January 2014

We spent 3 nights at Hotel Santa Maria in December and really enjoyed our stay. This is not a typical hotel block, but a beautifully converted 16th-century convent, boasting a lovely orange tree courtyard. Truly enchanting.

The hotel couldn't be better located - in the middle of vibrant Trastevere, yet tucked away in a quiet historical street. Stepping outside in the beautiful narrow streets is like walking into a movie set filled with archeological beauties, bars, shops and restaurants.

The stuff is very pleasant and attentive. The rooms are quite small but cozy, clean and comfortable.
Breakfast is also great, with a wide choice of pastries, cold and hot food and fresh fruit and juices.

What a lovely place, this truly is a hidden gem. We will definitely go back.

Great impressions start with check in.. And ours was great! Our front desk worker..sorry, forgot his name, middle aged gent..was very helpful with parking and maps. Then, we were so happy to have parking! We left the car in the courtyard for our stay. Easy walking distance to great restaurants, also to most attractions..and if you get tired, a cheap taxi ride back. Great afternoon happy hour snacks, bar service in the afternoon for a drink in the shaded courtyard, an amazing oasis in the city.

Absolutely wonderful property located in the midst of Trastevere. Staff was pleasant and very accommodating. Short walk to tons of restaurants and piazzas. Food was outstanding. Would recommend this property to anyone. Great breakfasts and really nice "happy 2 hrs" in lounge in courtyard of hotel.....protected by large wrought iron gates with buzzer entry and exit each time you left or entered property.

I've little to add to the glowing reviews left by others, except to say that as well as the shady orange tree courtyard, there is also a terrace seating area with some sun loungers. Plus a useful lounge, with comfy chairs/sofas and a computer.

Great place to stay: calm, peaceful and secure, but very close to bars, restaurants and clubs.

This hotel made our Roman holiday perfect. The staff all speak English well. They are very helpful and nice. There are just 20 rooms, all on one level, circling a courtyard with outdoor seating under the orangentrees. There is free wifi and a guest computer.

The rooms are beautifully decorated and hve paintings with local motifs. There is a safe, a mini bar and a large bathtub.

The breakfast is nice too. There are several types of bread, cereals and juices to choose from as well as hard boiled and scrambed eggs, sanwich meat (salame), some veggies, fruits, and even cakes.

The location is great: just steps away from the busy, charming Piazza Santa Maria, yet the hotel is a quiet, secluded place. The rambling, narrow streets of Trastevere have plenty of nice restaurants, bars and cafes. The Vatican is 20 min walk away, 15 min to Piazza Navona.

This hotel is a gem and we will be back.

A quiet retreat in the heart of bustling Trastevere, the friendly, informative staff seem to really care about their guests' experience of Rome. The rooms are charming, the breakfast and happy hour snacks generous. We had a splendid week here and would definately return and recommend to friends.

Room Tip: we liked the mansard suite--very quiet and private-- but as they warn, it's not for tall people…

This was our 15th visit to Rome and the first time we dared venture on the other side of the Tiber for our lodging; we shouldn't have waited so long. While this former religious housing does remind one a bit of a motel, there is also plenty of charm to be found behind its walls... once you find it at all. The Santa Maria is tucked away within the rabbit warren of ancient, narrow streets just a block or so from one of Rome's oldest churches--Santa Maria in Trastevere. You ring-in outside a huge metal gate and are let-into a walled compound, where the guest rooms surround a courtyard of citrus trees. It was an unusually cold winter week when we were there, so we couldn't partake of sitting in the charming courtyard, but we did wonder if gravel was the best paving option. I'm guessing that rooms vary in size, but our double was smaller than it appeared in the photos. But the bathroom was roomy with plenty of hot water and included a full-size bath-tub, unusual in this price-range. The bed was comfortable enough, there is a modest mini-bar and the desk staff friendly and helpful. We especially enjoyed the ample breakfast buffet included in a separate dining room across the courtyard. Our complaints are minor: we had a corner room, so all the late and early arriving guests could be disturbing as they hauled their luggage using loud voices past our door and window. The location is fantastic if you are a walker; virtually all the historic sites can be reached on foot from this central location, and there are dozens of excellent restaurant choices to be had just blocks from your door.

Room Tip: Ask for a quiet room away from the internal foot-traffic.
