“An Oasis in Rome”
Reviewed 20 April 2014

A small, quaint hotel in Trastevere, away from the bustle of Rome. Close to excellent restaurants and very walkable to all the sights. The rooms are on the small side, and furnished only for efficiency. But this is made up for by the friendly staff who make a strong effort to be helpful, and the courtyard which is relaxing, with orange trees and benches throughout. The breakfast buffet is ample, and the afternoon happy hour is a treat. Although drinks were full price, the free snacks hit the spot, and we met the most interesting people during this time. Overall, a great experience!

We had a fabulous stay at Hotel Santa Maria. It is a hidden gem. It is a beautiful place. The staff is absolutely wonderful. I did speak Italian but I really did not need to use it much as all of the staff spoke English perfectly well. The breakfasts every morning were absolutely perfect. We started our days early and appreciated that breakfast was open at 7:30 a.m. The selection was tremendous and absolutely delicious. There are quaint restaurants all along the lanes nearby. We had wonderful dinners and did not have to walk far after our very busy days touring Rome. There is also a laundry facility around the corner to do your laundry if you are travelling Italy a long while as we were. It was such a relief to have clean clothes in a very short amount of time. Do not forget to take time to visit the terrace. There are lounge chairs and tables for you to relax after a long day of touring all over Rome. You have a beautiful view of the city from up there. It was very clean and I felt very safe. If you are looking for a hotel just outside of the hustle and bustle of the business of Rome, this is the place to be.

Room Tip: Ground floor room we had was very nice and quite.

A great small boutique hotel well away from the bustle of Rome. Situated in Trastevere area, easy walking to all venues, large number of restaurants and bars in the area. The hotel itself is very nice, staff friendly, helpful for any inquiries that you may have. The room we had was smallish, thought a bit overpriced for what it was.. Ah in Rome!! Breakfast very good, lots of choice, included in the price of the room. Overall a pleasant place to hang your hat for a visit to Roma!!

We had a wonderful stay here @ Hotel Santa Maria! We had difficulties finding it (we were driving) but most of the taxi drivers know where it is, we asked locals & then we found it (it was definitely worth the hunt). We had a tour planned & the desk recommended a taxi, they will pick you up @ the gate...sooooo nice! We had a tour of the Colosseum & were planning on taking the bus but the staff recommended the taxi & we were so glad we did that instead (Best 10 euros we ever spent)! The rooms were accommodating and we really enjoyed the lovely gardens, very well kept & the staff was so very pleasant & helpful @ all times! The 5:00pm happy hour with hors d' oeuvres was so wonderful, we would go find lunch & simply order drinks & eat the complimentary hors d' oeuvres for dinner...it was so nice not to have to worry about dinner. The breakfast were wonderful! Such a great selection & I really enjoyed the cappuccino's @ Hotel Santa Maria! We highly recommend this hotel if you are staying in Rome, so close to everything & very family friendly, we will return if we are ever in the area! P.S. make reservations for your rental car ahead of time, we didn't & almost didn't have a parking accommodation (right next door to the hotel--very convenient)--they made a space for us, we were so grateful!
Thank you Hotel Santa Maria for a wonderful stay @ your fine Hotel in Rome & accommodating our every need! The Berry Family

A beautiful small hotel, hidden away in the side streets of Trastevere, but a fantastic location as very close to the river and walking distance (average 20 mins) of the sights of Rome. Many small and family-friendly restaurants in the area, so after long days on your feet, you don't have far to go to eat and be entertained in the evening. Also extremely close to the beautiful Santa Maria church. The hotel consists of a number of rooms around a small courtyard. Our room was clean and spacious, with a modern bathroom, and an excellent shower. Continental breakfast was included and had lots of choice for children and adults alike. Staff were always friendly and extremely helpful. Rooms were quiet, and cool, due to the shade of the orange trees outside. It wasn't hot as we travelled in April, but I'd imagine the rooms would also be cool in the heat of the summer. We stayed in the 'senior suite' as we are a large family, which was fantastic with 4 single beds (which you can push together) and another two smaller beds on a small balcony above the room which is perfect for children aged between 6 and 13. Any older will find the beds too short, and the spiral stairs are a little dangerous for younger children. We easily slept 6 in there and it was lovely to find a room in a city centre where we could all be together. We will definitely stay there again next time.
Only downside was having just one toilet/bathroom, but there is another toilet in the courtyard.
Also recommend that you email the hotel to arrange a taxi from the airport, as the hotel is not easy to find when you first arrive in Rome. Rates are reasonable, and they can also arrange a larger taxi for 6 people.

Room Tip: 'Senior Suite' is perfect for families with 3 or 4 children.

I stayed at the Hotel Santa Maria with my 3 teenagers. The hotel is charming, filled with orange trees, open spaces, a sun patio and charming faux painting on the walls. Our room was comfortable and spacious. Breakfast offered a great selection. I loved the wine and cappuccino bar that allowed a mid-day or evening pick me up! I felt truly rested and peaceful here. The cab drivers bringing us home from the other side of the river didn't like to cross the river so we usually walked the final 3 blocks from the walking bridge without a problem. The hotel staff would call for a cab to go out, with easy service within 5 minutes right to the door. The Trastevere area is full of life and local restaurants which we enjoyed, but we could still get easily to the tourist areas (Colosseum and Vatican, Trevi Fountain, Spanish Steps, etc. I will definitely recommend this hotel.

Room Tip: Loved the junior suite, just off the sun terrace.
