We just returned from our first trip to Italy where we spent five nights in Hotel Santa Maria. This is really an extraordinary place. From the moment our taxi dropped us at the square we were entranced by the quiet alleyways that lead to this lovely and secluded the hotel. Little did we know these same alleyways become lively nightspots full of people strolling and dining in the dozens of trattorrias and wine bars. The hotel is an oasis in Rome, with quiet garden patios under orange trees where we sipped cappuchino and used the Wi-Fi. We walked easily to most of the sites. The staff was happy to summon a taxi for others. They couldn't have been more helpful. Our room was a "mansarda" suite, meaning it was on the second floor in a sort of dormer configuration. It was very comfortable with a seperate sleeping area and 1/2 bath for our teenager, and so quiet that we all overslept the first day. The only sounds we heard were birds and chuchbells from nearby Santa Maria. The breakfast buffet, served in a lovely cafe with beautiful pastrys and fresh cappuchino, made it hard to leave each day, but the incredible sights of Rome await! In all, an unforgettable stay.

This was the first time I had been on holiday alone with my eight year old daughter. What a wonderful time we had at Hotel Santa Maria. The location was perfect. During the day we could easily walk to all the sites, stopping for ice cream along the way, and in the evening we could relax outside in the hotel courtyard before seeking a place for our evening meal with a multitude of restaurants to choose from, all less than 5 minutes walk away from the hotel and much more reasonably priced than those next to the main tourist sites.
Any questions we had or information we needed was readily provided by the hotel staff with a smile and a genuine interest in making our stay in Rome enjoyable. From bus tours, to tram routes, recommended restaurants, where to buy ice cream, the best wines to bring home with us, current events in Rome and consoling a tearful child (who didn't want to leave at the end of our trip), Hotel Santa Maria was there to help.
We enjoyed the courtyard style of the hotel and the fact that it was an intimate experience. The hotel had a simple formula of good friendly service.
When we go back to Rome, which we surely must, there is nowhere else that I would want to stay.

My family and I had a wonderful stay at the Santa Maria. Our children are 7 and 10, and we were given a perfect room for the four of us. A bedroom with double bed for me and my husband, and an adjoining room for the kids with a bunkbed and sliding door for privacy. And all for a very reasonable price... really a great value. The room wasn't large, but we were very comfortable, and it was quiet, which was a big plus in noisy Rome. The staff was always helpful, and we enjoyed relaxing in the lovely garden and enjoying the complimentary afternoon antipasti buffet. It's also in a great area, Trastevere. It was easy to walk everywhere in the city... nothing seemed too far away. All in all, the Santa Maria was a wonderful experience, and we will definitely stay again next time we go to Rome!

This hotel is situated in the Trastevere - the old part of Rome where the best restaurants are. Both the ancient ruins, the Vatican and the shopping areas are within 30 minutes walking distance. Rooms are extremely clean and well maintained, The orange-tree surrounded courtyard is a delightful way to relax, with the complimentary nibbles in the evening. We had three children aged 10 to 14 and took a two bedroomed suite which had ample room for us all. The service was friendly and excellent and they offered a 10% discount for paying in cash, too.

A perfect quiet place in "the middle of" Roma (Trastevere). Lovely (rather small) clean rooms, great breakfast and top service all the way. Several orange trees surrounding the hotels private garden made this hotel something special and not what one expect of a hotel in a big city like Roma. We now know where to stay next time we visit Roma.

Although it is very hard to find at first, the hotel is a very secluded retreat from the noise of the city. Lots of good restaurants and shops in the area. Our room was functional and clean, maybe not as luxurious as the price would indicate. Breakfasts were good. No internet access in the room.

The Hotel Santa Maria was everything it was advertised to be. The service at the hotel was wonderful, ranging from arranging very late night transportation from the airport to returning items left behind by the children with us. Breakfast was a highlight with items for every taste, including excellent coffee.

The location was ideal -- we walked to all the sights we wanted to see in Rome, from the Vatican to shopping at the Spanish Steps to visiting the traditional sights around the Forum and Colosseum, and everything in between. The Trastevere neighborhood and nearby Santa Maria Basilica added to the experience.

We will definitely stay here again on our next trip to Rome.
