For the third time we spent 5 days at Hotel Santa Maria. We love the place. We have tried other hotels in Rome, none of them as pleasant as Santa Maria. We are already planning next years trip.

My husband and I had a wonderful stay at the Santa Maria. It was clean, comfortable, and beautiful and quiet. Even though it is in the center of a very popular and busy area it was very quiet and enjoyable. The breakfast was delicious and had many choices. Thanks everyone for a great stay.

We just returned from an extended vacation in Italy and stayed in Rome at the Hotel Santa Maria. We truly enjoyed being in the neighborhood of Trastevere, but I wouldn't do it if it's your first trip to Rome. It's just a little bit out of the zone of all the places you want to go. We have been to Rome many times, so it was perfect for us. . The Santa Maria was great for the price. We highly recommend it. Staff very helpful, setting relaxing, great neighborhood restaurants. A little hard to find if you are driving a car. I would get better directions from the hotel ahead of time. Yes, we had a GPS, but it only had one way to get to the hotel and that way was blocked by construction. It's behind the Santa Maria church and you have to enter a non-visitor zone to get to it. Parking available on thier property for 10Euros a day. I would stay here again if we are in Rome.

We have just returned from a lovely Bank Holiday stay in the charming Hotel Santa Maria
and hope to return. It is a calm and beautiful base to stay in lively Trastevere.
The staff are friendly and helpful with everything and the beautiful, sunny central courtyard with orange and lemon trees is a fantastic place to enjoy the lovely buffet breakfast or an aperitivo (with complimentary buffet) before going out for dinner.
We had long wanted to stay in this district of Rome and the Hotel Santa Maria has made it a
memorable one Trastevere is well served by public transport and it was easy to visit the Caravaggio 400 and the new Maxxi gallery.

We selected a 2-night stay at the Hotel Santa Maria after reading reviews on Tripadvisor and Cruise Critic. Previous descriptions as a quiet oasis in bustling Rome are quite accurate. The entrance is located on an out-of-the-way alley but we easily located the hotel using Google Maps. Breakfast of scrambled eggs, cereals, pastries and juices were enjoyed in a quaint outdoor courtyard lined with orange trees. The Italian coffee was excellent. Free hors d'oeuvres are offered 5:30-7:30 PM. The bar offers beer and wine (glass of wine = 6 euros). Short 30 minute walk to the colosseum to the west or 30 minute walk to the Vatican to the east. Easily walked to the Spanish steps as well (not sure of the time it took). Our room was comfortable, the bathroom clean with a great shower and the staff was very helpful. All staff we made contact with at the reception desk spoke very good English. There is a computer in the indoor dining area with free internet access. If we make it back to Rome someday, we'll stay at the Hotel Santa Maria without hesitation.

We enjoyed our two night stay at the Hotel Santa Maria in the Trastevere neighbour hood - 30 min walk to the Vatican and 45 min walk to the Coliseum. The hotel is located in a safe area with lots of restaurants and bars, but very much geared to tourists. Our room (#2) was spacious, clean and quiet at night. Most rooms face a lovely courtyard with orange trees. We ate our breakfasts in the courtyard. Our only complaint was the absence of air conditioning in our room. We called the front desk and were told that it took some time to come on... it did not. The next night we were told that a Rome City By-law did not permit the use of air conditioners until June 1st. When we were checking out, the front desk person told me that the air conditioner was broken. We would stay here again, but would make certain first that the AC is working, especially at the end of May. Because of the ground floor location, windows open onto the courtyard with not much breeze, so keeping curtains open is not an option, and not much cool air gets in at night.
The hotel was very accommodating in booking our restaurant reservations and taxis.

For real local cuisine and Roman atmosphere, we recommend Piccola Trattoria da Lucia (Vicola del Mattonato 2) in the Trastevere neighbourhood just a few blocks away from the hotel or Ristorante Maccheroni (Piazza delle Coppelle 44) near the Pantheon. Piccola Trattoria da Lucia is a family run restaurant and has been cooking up amazing dishes since 1938. Highly recommended.

Ristorante Maccheroni was recently reviewed in Jamie Oliver's food magazine, though the food was good the staff could be a little rude towards tourists. We also had to send back the pasta with chick peas dish because it was way too over-salted. But the truffle pasta and the grilled sausages were great, as was the caprese salad.
